Dog sleeping on our bed or not?

DH wants the six month old puppy on the bed at night. I think she snores, farts, it’s unhygienic and she’s got her own bed. Don’t mind a puppy cuddle in the morning....but not all night.

one cold winter night, got startled by a noise in my home tore across my face and i got one of his claws in my eyeball...big scratch, severe pain...trip to the emerge dept...december 21st...spent christmas with an eye patch...and daily trips to the outpatient department for dressing changes and cocaine eye drops.

i love puppies but sadly my eyesight is important so never again.

When we got our rescue dog my rules were - he stays downstairs and he isn't allowed on the bed. That lasted all of 5 minutes. In our case, our dog had some real issues from being abused. He wanted to be near you constantly, we knew he'd really settled in when he actually went off on his own and slept elsewhere at night. He's been gone 3 years now and I'd love to have his little fat arse between me and DH

Not helpful for you, but if you really don't want to have the dog on your bed, don't allow it at all. It's an all or nothing thing I think. Our dog ended up having the spare room (double) bed as his room!

It’s unhygienic and ffs it’s a puppy, it shouldn’t rule. Set some boundaries now! That’s just the husband.

I love our dog. I don't love breathing in dog hair from my duvet cover as I inhale in my sleep..

I'd describe myself as untidy and a bit slovenly where housework is concerned but the idea of either dog or cat on my bed makes me feel a bit ill and shuddery at the basic lack of hygiene to be honest. It just feels yucky.

I can't vote because there's no right or wrong. Mine sleeps in the bed with me.

But, you can't only let them in sometimes. It's all or nothing. Otherwise they sneak in at night, or disturb you by trying.

I love our dog more than life itself, he doesn't sleep on our bed.

No way! It'll probably disturb your sleep when the dog gets up in the night, moves around etc. My dog is elderly and leaks wee in her sleep and randomly barks, wanders around. If she was used to sleeping in our bed I'd never get any sleep (it gets broken as it is with her in the next room).

We used to let our dog sleep on the bed sometimes. Our dog trainer told us this was a HUGE no-no, that it can leave to poor behaviour when they think they’re leading the pack.

She now sleeps in her crate downstairs and seems to prefer it - we leave the door open and she doesn’t get up all night, and won’t leave in the morning until we tell her to. It makes it easier to train a dog when they have boundaries 😊

The current dog has always slept on the bed. She's delightfully cuddly and light enough to just roll over when one of us does, so she doesn't even trap the duvet underneath her. She's not farty, either (unlike her predecessor, who was plainly conducting some sort of biological war) and is a non-moulting breed, so doesn't get the bedding covered in hair.

I'd think twice if she was a labrador or something though.

No, they hog the bed and smell. Leave them sleeping in the nice warm kitchen on a soft snuggly dog bed.

I love my dog but she has her own bed and I have mine. My bed smells of fresh linen and lavender. Her bed smells of dog farts, dog breath and just plain old dog. Go figure.

My little one sleeps on the bed then creeps in when I'm asleep. She's a sneaky little bugger but I love waking up on cold mornings with my own personal foot warmer.

Had a similar discussion when we got our pup, the answer was an absolutely no way from me.

We have two dogs one a 6 has slept with me every night since he came and the other one is 2 and sleeps with my son. We wouldn't have it any other way. Adore them and he keeps me warm.
All the things she does your husband probably does too so not much difference really.
We wash ours down with wipes are their walk and we clean their teeth before bed. I also hoover my bed in the morning xxxx

I love having my cats and my little dog on the bed with me but I am on my own, my big dogs when I had them always slept downstairs. I suppose it depends on the size of the dog, a big dog in a bed of two might be a bit much unless your bed is huge but a tiny dog not such an issue. You might find if your a bit of a fidget the dog gets annoyed with you and fucks off of its own accord anyway!

One thing to bare in mind is that if the dog isn’t capable of getting onto the bed itself then don’t let it on because its bones/joints won’t be strong enough to withstand the impact of them jumping off and could lead to injuries.

My (very large) black lab mix began coming up and sleeping on my bed when my STBXH left. He doesn’t stay there all night, he jumps on when I get into bed and at some point when I’m falling asleep I’m aware of him jumping down and going off somewhere to settle for the rest of the night. He jumps back up when he’s ready for me to get up and start my day....it’s almost as if he waits until I’m safely asleep and ok. I bloody love this dog, he’s kept me going some days

My DH took the decision, despite many arguments the contrary, to allow our dogs on the bed whilst I was working, so I then had a huge battle to stop it. I always slept poorly with them on the bed, sometimes not at all. They're not small dogs and my DH is tall. It has taken ages to rectify, but I needed it to stop when I had a newborn who wouldn't sleep unless she was in bed with me. I needed sleep far more than they need to be in bed with us, they've got their own comfy beds. From experience I wouldn't allow it unless you want a huge battle later!

Love our dog to bits but definitely no sharing our bed overnight. She comes in for a nice big cuddle in the mornings before breakfast though

I'm currently lay in bed with the dog curled up by my feet, I find it comforting feeling her there, she's not very big and we have a a super king size bed so there's plenty of room.

We made the mistake of letting our lab x staff sleep on our bed when we first got him , we had him for about 3 years and one night I tried to get him to move over a bit and he curled his lips at me !
I realised that I had woke him up with a start he was very sheepish straight away after but it made me realise it was not a good idea so we bought him a big soft bed and he took to it like he had used it all his life

DDog sleeps in the bed with me. It started because (long story short, reasons totally outside my control) he was being left for far longer in the day than was desirable. I figured I wasn't going to prevent him being with his humans when he was a bit short on company in the day and I was a bit lonely in the aftermath of a relationship breakdown

Several years down the road, seeing someone new, DDog is thoroughly accustomed to sleeping on the bed. He does, however, get evicted from the room when it's time for sex. Thankfully new boyfriend is happy with him staying in the bed.

It's certainly much easier to start off with a dog not sleeping in your bed and then allow it in later than the reverse - dogs are social sleepers, and their natural instinct is to want to sleep with their family members. Dogs do best with consistency though - it's easiest all round if the dog is allowed on the bed all the time or not at all (just in the mornings can be tricky for a dog to understand!)

We'd had our rescue dog a few months and she slept in her basket in living room until one night there was a thunderstorm and she came whimpering into our room and into our bed which then became a regular thing.
Then when our first child was born we had to put a stop to it which was difficult!!
