AIBU?

Dog sleeping on our bed or not?

No way, not ever, YANBU
oh, little doggie on bed, look at her eyes, hoe can you be so heartless, YABU

DH wants the six month old puppy on the bed at night. I think she snores, farts, it’s unhygienic and she’s got her own bed. Don’t mind a puppy cuddle in the morning....but not all night.

We're dog on bed people, as soon as she was able to get up and down she slept on the bed. Before that her bed on the floor but still in the bedroom. She likes to be with us.

Foot of the bed, no problem. I heard a few horror stories about dogs being trapped in crates during house fires so I'd always have the dog upstairs at night, even if in a bed on the floor of your room.

Mine does sleep on the bed and I do enjoy the cuddles in the morning but I wish I hadn’t let him. Hair on the sheets, and definitely affects my sleep. It’s a difficult habit to stop now though as he will jump up at some point during the night.

We didn’t let ours when she was little, she had to learn to settle on her bed. Now she’s getting on a bit we invite her up on the bed but she knows to ask, probably stays there 2 nights a week, and will have cuddles and get off the rest of the time, apart from the first day we have clean sheets each time, she’s not allowed on then! She’s also a Bernese, so almost human sized lying stretched out on her back. We bought a super king!

My cat sleeps on my bed with me every night.Im on my own and find it quite comforting. Plus I snore and fart myself so it's the poor cat that suffers more than me.
Shes good at curling up on the end of the bed so doesn't disturb me anyway.

When I was a child it was almost unheard of for a dog to be allowed upstairs, they usually slept in the kitchen.
Nowadays people seem to humanise their dogs and treat them like babies.
It is not good for them, no matter how much we may love them.
Stick to your guns.

Mine aren't even allowed on the stairs let alone upstairs.

God no. Downstairs in his crate for the first year, now he has the run of the kitchen although I doubt he leaves his bed.

  1. How do you have sex with a dog there??
  2. I have pretty low standards, but even I don't want a load of dog hair (and worse) on my infrequently washed bedding.

I have a Lhasa apso and she sleeps in bed with us. She is quite small, doesn't Shed, and doesn't have any accidents on the bed. She's also washed and groomed regularly so she doesn't smell. I love feeling her cuddled up to me in the night and hearing her wee snores and sighs.

Mine gets in for the first half hour or so, under the covers on my feet. Then he sleeps in his own until the morning when he gets back in. He’s a really clean chihuahua though - I wouldn’t want a big smelly, hairy, muddy, bed hogging dog on there (family spaniels when I was growing up...)

Sofa yes, bed no. Mine sleeps in the kitchen with the door closed. She is super cute and we love her but she is already my shadow all day - I don't want to share my space at night with her as well! Maybe not fashionable but I kind of think dogs should know their place.

No.

I don't have a dog though as I don't want my house to either smell of dog or be full of dog hairs.

A dog on the bed is soo many steps too far.

Our dog trainer told us this was a HUGE no-no, that it can leave to poor behaviour when they think they’re leading the pack.

Your dog trainer was not very good. Dominance theory has been completely debunked, any trainer worth their salt knows this and does not work based on alpha/pack theories.

If you like your dog sleeping on the bed, great.
If you don't, don't have them sleep there.

My boy only sleeps on our bed during nights where he needs some comfort e.g. in thunderstorms. That's only because he takes up all the room, else he would be up here a lot more.

YABU beacuse i share my bed with a bajillion dogs and its lovely...

However back in reality, dogs in/on the bed is personal choice, you do you.

Dogs should however sleep in the room with you IF THEY want to (not if YOU want them to) until such point as you have built sufficient confidence and security that dog chooses to sleep elsewhere.

Dogs are a gregarious social animal evolved to WANT and NEED to be close to humans, forcing them to sleep elsewhere can and does cause distress.

Sleeping in the same bed or same room as your dog and giving them choice does NOT cause separation related problems, nor does it cause them to think they are any sort of pack leader (since dogs don't form packs that would be distinctly unlikely) nor dominant over you (since dominance is the outcome of an interaction between two members of the same species over a specific resource, that would be impossible).

I will say, sharing a bed with your puppy will tell you a LOT about how well puppy is coping day to day - snuggly puppies who NEED to squeeze in tight to you are puppies who have found the day pretty hard. Relaxed puppies who don't need to do that have coped well or had an easy time.

This indicator for how well a pup is coping is very helpful for working out how much to do wrt training, socialisation and habituation and vital information if you are dealing with any dog who has experienced trauma.

Fuck no. I have two monsters and we live in the Caribbean. It's hot enough without the smelly bastards taking up all the bed space.

Nope.
Big ol' smelly gun dog. I love him to bits and pieces, but no bed-sharing for us.

My German Shepherd has slept on the bed since I was widowed... she keeps me safe and we cuddle up together. If she gets too hot, she lies on the floor at the bottom of the bed then gets back up when she wants. I’m so used to her that I don’t notice her moving around. I do, however, notice her snoring, dreaming and farting😳
As there’s only the 2 of us here, we’re quite happy with the arrangement. Clean bedding every couple of days, it’s no big deal.
She didn’t leave my side when I was bed-ridden with pneumonia (or Covid 19 🤷‍♀️) earlier in the year.

Forgot to say, she sleeps happily in her crate (no door on it, just her own ‘space’ ) when I’m at work or if I need to go out. She’s 5 in July, never any problems with sleeping arrangements!🐾

Our dog isn’t allowed upstairs and sleeps in a very comfy crate in the kitchen with the door open so she can get to her water etc. She’s a pup so only allowed supervised in carpeted rooms but I spend most of the day in the kitchen and garden with her. (She’ll be allowed more freedom when she’s definitely house trained and stopped teething but not upstairs)!

I trained my puppy to sleep downstairs in the crate. Then he grew out of the crate so slept on a sofa in the playroom.
Then when older he started wondering about at night so I brought him upstairs.
He’s allowed to sleep on my bed, but usually sleeps in his own bed.

We’ve just got a puppy and atm he’s downstairs and he’s happy down there. I expect as he gets a bit older and doesn’t have accidents in the night we will let him upstairs but he will be in his own bed not on ours. We’ve just managed to move our daughter out of our bed so I’m not keen to have a dog in there!

My darling Pom sleeps with me most nights. Sometimes she sleeps in the hall or on the landing. She’s so soft and snuggly. Lovely 😊
