Dog sleeping on our bed or not?

No way, not ever, YANBU
oh, little doggie on bed, look at her eyes, hoe can you be so heartless, YABU

DH wants the six month old puppy on the bed at night. I think she snores, farts, it’s unhygienic and she’s got her own bed. Don’t mind a puppy cuddle in the morning....but not all night.

I’m a dog lover & have a dog. Looking at the amount of hairs on his own duvet cover there’s no way I’d want him on my bed. I love him - in the bedroom yes, on the furniture ( with covers) yes but not in my bed !

SimonJT · 09/06/2020 06:07

I already have a cat, a boyfriend and often a four year old in my bed, so no! Our new puppy has a pen with a crate inside the pen, he sleeps in there but until last night I was sleeping on the sofa while he settled down. I also have a cat flap on my bedroom door so my room is my cats dog free space. When the puppy is a bit older and has better manners I’ll probably bring him in for the odd morning cuddle.

Having sex with a cat in the room is bad enough at times, imagine adding a puppy into the mix!

A huge NO. It's a set up for codependency. No gross dog in my bed, thanks. You have a shower most days, right? The dog is lucky if it gets bathed once a month. It's like sleeping with a filthy carpet. Ew

JustaScratch · 09/06/2020 06:27

We let our rescue dog sleep in our bedroom when we first got him - not on the bed, but with his bed right next to ours. We had planned to put him in the utility room but he freaked out and we couldn't do it to him. Gradually we moved his bed further and further away and now he sleeps happily in a different room and doesn't bother us.

Dogs don't sleep quietly all night - they wake up, move around, stretch, sneeze. I wouldn't want that in my bed - plus fur!

Pipandmum · 09/06/2020 06:32

It's your choice (though you must agree). But one thing: do not allow it on some occasions and then ban it on others.
My dogs sleep on the bed. One is very much in his spot, the other can be annoying and sleeps slap bang in the middle. But I just shove her over if in my way. Not sure if I could tolerate it with a partner - there just wouldn't be enough room.

Wallywobbles · 09/06/2020 06:34

As a teen I woke to see a large fat tick coming over the lip of the duvet. Last time the dog slept on my bed.

SuperMumTum · 09/06/2020 06:34

Yuck. Smelly and unhygienic.

Booboostwo · 09/06/2020 06:48

@PileofToss

We used to let our dog sleep on the bed sometimes. Our dog trainer told us this was a HUGE no-no, that it can leave to poor behaviour when they think they’re leading the pack.

She now sleeps in her crate downstairs and seems to prefer it - we leave the door open and she doesn’t get up all night, and won’t leave in the morning until we tell her to. It makes it easier to train a dog when they have boundaries 😊

It’s not a BU matter, it’s a matter of choice. If you enjoy having the dog on your bed do it, if not don’t do it. Your DH and you will need to reach a compromise between you.

The above advice is complete rubbish though. Pack theory is entirely discredited and allowing your dog on the bed doesn’t turn it into your boss. If any dog displays resource guarding behavior with a bed, sofa, etc it’s time to get a behaviorist in.

One of the most interesting things about sleeping with dogs is that sleeping in the same room as them for the first couple of years of life reduces the risk of asthma. There are quite a few studies on this but it has to be counter balanced with the risk of a dog biting a baby/toddler.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 06:49

Dog was not supposed to go upstairs but the truth is he was always been on a stealth mission for household domination and we are his very willing slaves. Dog in the bed isn’t great for your sex life that’s why I wouldn’t encourage it and ours likes to get under the duvet which is quite disruptive. He’ll sleep with dd if he can’t sleep with us or we’ll leave him downstairs - I know his hierarchy of preferences he doesn’t get his favourite all the time and he seems ok with that and sleepy doggy cuddles are so very lovely.

lemmathelemmin · 09/06/2020 06:58

A woman appeared on this morning a few years ago to talk about her dog who had ripped her face off after letting it sleep in her bed. It was having a bad dream.

Ilovecats23 · 09/06/2020 07:07

My dog is 50kg so doesn’t sleep in the bed all night, mostly because he gets uncomfortable and can’t stretch out properly! But he does often come in for puppy cuddles (literally snuggles in between me and DH) and then gets down before we actually go to sleep. Honestly if he could fit it really wouldn’t bother me, especially in the cold winter 😂

Kahlua4me · 09/06/2020 07:12

Ours is not allowed upstairs and sleeps in the kitchen. He has his crate in there, with door open, and a big sofa so is very comfortable.

He comes up in the mornings when dd brings us a cup of tea but that’s the only time in our house. Mind you when he goes to our lovely dog boarder he sleeps on her bed!

unicornparty · 09/06/2020 07:20

No way, it's grim and dirty. Have you ever smelt a dog's bed?

copycopypaste · 09/06/2020 07:28

It always seems like a lovely idea, in reality it's a monumental pain in the arse!

I bet he's got visions of this lovely fury thing curled up quietly at his feet. In reality it'll be restless, moving around, sitting on your head, taking up all the space. You won't want to move in case you wake it up, it'll lick you at 6am because it's bored, it'll fart and snore and you'll get no uninterrupted sleep for the next 15 years.

Sod that... mine are crated downstairs at night

Home42 · 09/06/2020 07:29

My dog sleeps on the bed or under it or maybe in the hall. He goes to bed when DD does and sleeps on her bed until I come up and then he swaps. If my boyfriend comes over dog is banished to the hallway when we have sex and then sleeps under the bed. I wash my bedding twice a week and the dog once a week! I love waking up with a dog curled up next to me 😁

rooarsome · 09/06/2020 07:30

YANBU. I love dogs but mine knows she is not to come upstairs. She's a St. Bernard so if she got in the bed there would be no room for anyone else! Apart from that I don't think it's hygienic

Tableclothing · 09/06/2020 07:31

Wondering if any of the people who sleep in a bed with their dogs every night are the same as the people who blame China's poor animal hygiene habits for coronavirus...

Malbecblooms · 09/06/2020 07:35

Ours is my baby and I love him more than most humans but we have rules and boundaries with him and he sleeps in his crate.

Ginfordinner · 09/06/2020 07:37

Or think that carpets are grim.

crispysausagerolls · 09/06/2020 07:38

It’s disgusting - it’s like sleeping with your shoes on the bed and walking all over the sheets with shoes on etc. Their paws have been everywhere 🤢 and the hair!

Booboostwo · 09/06/2020 07:38

I wonder if the people who make completely fallacious analogies are at all aware of the basics of human biology, zoology and cross species viral transmission.

OK, scrap that, I am not really wondering, I know the answer already.

Hyperion100 · 09/06/2020 07:39

I love dogs but they eat other dogs shit and love rolling in fox poo.

Absolutely no way should they ever be in your bed!

Neveranynamesleft · 09/06/2020 07:41

Gross

silentpool · 09/06/2020 07:42

No pets in the bed, I think its unhygienic. I do let the cat (when I have one) sleep on the spare bed during the day but that is on a bedspread.

LaughingDonkey · 09/06/2020 07:43

No, my puppy is not even allowed upstairs. It's a dog, hence boundaries are a must.

He snores loudly (French Bulldog), farts on occasion (despite high quality expensive food), might bark in his sleep, rolls and moves around. And while he has short hair and gets brushed/washed, he does shed - not on my bed, thank you!
