AIBU?

Dog sleeping on our bed or not?

No way, not ever, YANBU
oh, little doggie on bed, look at her eyes, hoe can you be so heartless, YABU

DH wants the six month old puppy on the bed at night. I think she snores, farts, it’s unhygienic and she’s got her own bed. Don’t mind a puppy cuddle in the morning....but not all night.

Mine was relegated to the kitchen by DH as he thought he was old enough now to sleep alone. I miss his little snores! And now I have to get out of bed to fetch him in the morning for cuddles instead of just opening the crate door from my bed. He slept longer when I’m with us too, so we didn’t have to get up so early. Pup didn’t sleep free-range in the bedroom though as when he does he jumps on and off the bed all night and steals things to chew up.

Mine sleeps right at the bottom of our bed

We change our bed weekly and hoover pretty much every day. She spends vast amounts of time in muddy puddles so is bathed often. Isn’t particularly slobbery and doesn’t moult a lot. She’s wormed, flea-ed and sees the groomer regularly

She’s allowed on the sofa, she cuddles up on my lap so I don’t really see sleeping at the end of our bed as anything to get worked up about to be honest

Our two large breeds are furniture and bed dogs. I'm not sure we ever consciously made the decision they just always were.

Given that my husband has night sweats and is the hairiest man on planet earth anyway, I can't say that the extra dog hair or slobber makes much difference as I have to change the bedding so often anyway. Maybe if I'd married someone else I'd have approached it differently hah!

No way, I cant get over the thought of an un wiped or washed exposed bum hole being on my sheets or sofa for that matter, also the dog hair, dog breath, slobber and mud from their paws makes me feel grim

Couldn’t agree more

I adore my girl but she is not allowed upstairs, nor on beds. We visit Holiday cottages a lot and even dog friendly ones don't allow that so this makes it so much easier.

DH and I are the only ones who use our bed.

My old boy does now. He's 12, has dementia and sundowns a lot. Being on the bed (I lay 2 of his fleeces on top of the covers) means he is more settled and it's less time I'm having to spend in the living room at ungodly hours whilst he paces.

Those of you who said yes to dog sleeping on your bed - out of interest, how did you vote on the 'grim carpets' thread?

My dog sleeps in the bed (under the duvet with his head on my legs normally) and our house has carpets. We also have three cats.

I'm just not one of those people who think pets are gross. The dog is washed regularly and his paws are wiped, we vacuum daily and change the bedding every week. I can't get worked up about a bit of a dog hair or slobber I'm afraid.

It’s a no from me. I’ve never had dogs in the bedroom or on furniture, apart from when they’re very tiny puppies when I’ll have their beds next to mine for a few weeks whilst housetraining, but after that, it’s downstairs. I hate sitting on the sofa or bed and getting covered in dog hair.

If both people are okay with it, that's fine, but it had to be both.

Our dogs don't fart or stink, but they do move around and take room by at the foot of the bed, so we've decided not to have them in our bed while we sleep to preserve our quality of rest. They come lie on the bed with us for a while as we unwind, though, which is a highlight of their day.

We went from:

Puppies in the kitchen (siblings - in their own warm and snuggly crates - classical music playing and kept an eye on them with the Furbo camera) - both pups v happy

to

5 months old - in crates in our room - both dogs v happy

to

6 months old - lovely in laws came to stay to look after the dogs while we go on holiday

one of the dogs starts crying... they NEVER do this with us....in laws take pity and take into their bed Shock

When we got back the dogs refused their crates and have now taken up squatters' rights of our bed. It's a nightmare! We have a super king size but they love to spread out and take up loads of room and sometimes I have to get up and go in the spare room as I wake up to find myself hanging out of the bed!! In the morning they wake me up by licking my mouth Envy

I absolutely love the idea of a dog in the bed as I adore my puppy and he would be so snuggly and cute, but I will not ever do it because he will stink the place up and make it all hairy. He has a lot of house space as it is, so no. As a couple you have to agree on this one, otherwise it will be done by stealth.

Not at night. Our cat sneaks in our room or the kids for a cuddle in the morning (or sits outside the door crying until you let him in) but at night no. I'd say the same for a dog.

Ours (RIP) started off as a pup sleeping in the kitchen, but later migrated to our room, supposedly sleeping on the floor, but often used to join us on the duvet later.
We have a nice big bed so we never minded. I can’t, and never could, be arsed to fuss very much about germs/hygiene. In over 14 years it never gave any of us the slightest problem.
When she got old and was unable to jump up, I would help her.
I miss her. 🙁

On weekend mornings we’d often have the cat on the bed, too, not to mention dds.

No - not ban dogs. Just keep them under control! That doesn’t involve sleeping with them!

Urgh, no.

Love my dog dearly (a big goofy whippet), but wouldn't want him in the bed with us. He's always slept downstairs, ever since we got him.

When ddog arrived to us first I was determined to avoid this, but probably as she was a rescue it lasted all of a hour before we relented. She mainly hops up and down off my bed during the night. I have her trained to sleep at the foot of the bed on a blanket, which I change every couple of nights. She has her own bed on the bedroom floor which she ignores and spends most of the night on the floor of the bedroom and short periods on the foot of the bed. She doesnt do well on her own generally anyway and I just couldnt put her through it. Love the wake up nose in my face in the morning anyway!

We've got two dogs, our eldest likes to sleep on the bed and our youngest prefers her own bed. Personally I like having them both nearby and it's not caused behaviour issues or anything.

Mine sleep in their crates mostly but come up in the mornings after DH lets them out for a pee. Love my morning cuddles with them but my sleep gets disturbed if they're in bed all night with me.

Mine was never allowed, then we gave in and it was lovely. He's blind now so we can't risk him roaming around in the middle of the night and falling down the stairs so he's back in his bed downstairs. Doesn't stop him from trying though!

9 year old child attacked by a dog in a caravan. Just in the news. It’s just not safe or hygienic.

Children are also attacked and killed by dogs in the living room, in gardens and out in public. Maybe we should just ban dogs. And cars, because they're dangerous too. And water, in case people drown!
