To be upset over chlorinated chicken and considering leaving the uk

I know a lot of people saw this coming. Its really upsetting how the uk is now beginning to bow down to our new masters. Im seriously considering to leave the country as chlorinated chicken will only be the beginning. They will completely ruin our farmers and foodstandards. And once theyve done that, who knows what else the US will demand, only for the UK to just roll over... Im quite sad over this actually. Any suggestions as to where to go? Whats Ireland like?

Just posted here for traffic.

I remember when we actually left the EU, and there were talks about a US - UK trade agreement. I was 100% sure this will happen, food standards will soon slide. Terrible.

Mumoblue · 05/06/2020 09:23

YANBU.
I am sick of being called a "Remoaner" for pointing out the objectively terrible shit that has come from the Brexit vote.

If Scotland goes for independence again, I'm out of here.

Intelinside57 · 05/06/2020 09:36

You do know that you'll always be able to go to a good local butcher and avoid these products?

Mumoblue · 05/06/2020 09:38

@Intelinside57 Not everyone can afford that. Is chlorinated chicken fine for the plebs?

Tanith · 05/06/2020 09:41

"You do know that you'll always be able to go to a good local butcher and avoid these products?"

You won't be able to avoid it if you eat out, use takeaways, use school meals, eat any ready-made or convenience food.

You won't even know it's there unless you cook and eat only the items from that local good butcher - and what's he going to do when farmers go out of business, or are forced to adopt American standards to survive?

BrokenBrit · 05/06/2020 09:42

@Intelinside57

But it’s not just about chicken. And not everyone can afford to do that. It’s about less stringent animal welfare as well as lower food safety standards for all products. Along with poorer labelling it will be very difficult for people to get the standards they are used to. I choose not to eat meat and dairy products but I will still be affected by this. We all will.
CecilyP · 05/06/2020 09:42

If there is somewhere else you want to go, go for it. However, it would be much simpler to avoid imported meat. Also remember to check the label ingredients on any ready meals.

choosesoap · 05/06/2020 09:46

quite extreme to leave the country. just dont buy it , its not a mandatory food.

Lovesgood · 05/06/2020 09:48

It looks like for awhile you will be able to avoid these products, but our farmers will likely be very pressured to adapt to the new lower american standards to survive. This is a very slippery slope to the bottom. It really upsets me. It leaves a very sinister feeling and not just about food but in general, because this has made it obvious how the UK will just go along with what ever the US demands.

It will become harder to buy 'good' meat and poultry and more expensive, saying 'don't buy it' is a cop-out.

Hingeandbracket · 05/06/2020 09:52

Im seriously considering to leave the country as chlorinated chicken will only be the beginning.
Bye then, good luck wherever you're off to.

Tanith · 05/06/2020 09:52

The National Farmers Union has been trying to raise awareness of these trade deals since February. Liz Truss has essentially allowed the Americans to walk all over her.

jellybelliee · 05/06/2020 09:52

Is there a petition or anything going yet?

mrbob · 05/06/2020 09:53

You could just not eat meat if you care about animal welfare...

Lovesgood · 05/06/2020 09:55

mrbob

It is not just about the meat though. ALL food standards will suffer.

Bit extreme to get out of the UK.

BubblesBuddy · 05/06/2020 09:56

I’m afraid people voted for this. They say they know what they voted for - so I’ll leave it there.

Many countries eat veal and other foods where you might dislike the production methods. I’m afraid that everywhere you go you would nee to read the labels and good quality food can be very expensive elsewhere too.

I have a feeling we will see British produced chicken not following American production values. Why would they? It’s a great chance to produce wholesome British food. Farmers would be mad to throw that opportunity away.

missyB1 · 05/06/2020 09:58

I’ve signed the petition and so have most of my friends, it’s being shared a lot on Facebook. I’m really worried about this too OP. The Covid crisis really illuminated the health inequalities in our society and lowering food standards will simply add to that problem. And our farmers will be screwed.

Lovesgood · 05/06/2020 09:59

Tanith

Thanks for the link. I will sign it. Never liked J Oliver tons in the past, but this kinda redeems him in my eyes.

Bit of an over the top reaction.

Tanith · 05/06/2020 10:00

It's not just meat, it's GM crops, pesticides, food additives - America also wants the right to veto other trade deals we make with other countries. They are driving a very hard bargain - and we have Liz ' Truss to stand up to them.

There's another thread on this:

pinktaxi · 05/06/2020 10:00

Maybe I should point out we will still be trading with the EU and will maintain theirs and our own food standards, and not chlorinate chicken? We don't have to accept food standards of the US as part of a trade agreement. No agreements have even been made so why this hysteria?

Rhayader · 05/06/2020 10:00

Where are you planning on going instead?

missyB1 · 05/06/2020 10:00

Ireland is probably lovely but even wetter than UK in my experience!

CecilyP · 05/06/2020 10:04

It’s worth bearing in mind that much of the chicken currently in ready meals is neither British or from the EU. Always worth checking the label.
