All lives matter

I’ve disabled voting because today has been a lot already! I can’t deal with seeing another such stark display in % or how few people support BLM.
Is there a black Mumsnet section? I could do with somewhere to discuss race with other BAME people and Allies that doesn’t get hijacked with

•all lives matter
•what about...
•I’m oppressed too
•white people are suffering as well
•if black people would just...

Happy to hear suggestions for other forums as well. I don’t think Mumsnet is standing against racism, so i’m happy to flounce to get what I need. Which certainly isn’t the silencing of black voices whilst overt racism goes unchecked!

Hi Justine 👋 and fuck off Karen!

You can see why #solidarity is for white women became a thing when reading posts like some in this thread.

People are dying because they are black. Being called a Karen might upset you, it won't kill you.

Women are as racist as men. Women may not be the ones committing most of the individual acts of violence but women are damn sure part of the problem. Amy Cooper may not have attacked the man she called police and lied about being threatened by but her act was one of violence.

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/06/2020 17:47

The ignorant one today will become the ally tomorrow. I'm an ally but I wasn't always one, I've learned and still learning but wouldn't have done so if there was an obscure BAME thread people rarely visit except to talk about niche topics (that should really be a humanity topic). Let's persevere please.

It’s really not the black community’s job to educate white people though, and if members of the BAME community feel they would benefit from a dedicated space to talk about the issues they face, why can’t that be accepted as a need.

I know first hand that having a dedicated forum where people just “get it”, and who face similar issues to me can support me has been invaluable and I wouldn’t want to suggest other groups couldn’t have that for the sake of my education.

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 17:48

I won't accept a sexist shit meme to describe racist people when the violence objected to is almost exclusively committed by men.

Maybe you should focus on the issues and discussions at hand surrounding the black lives matter movment and stop making it about your own issues? This isn't the time for whataboutery.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/06/2020 17:50

Hmm instinctively I’m with you but what about white feminists, myself included, who call other women handmaidens for example? Is it just when there’s a racial element that women can’t call each other out?

I really don’t like the Karen thing but I’m conscious of how angry it’s made people and that makes me think more.

Objectively we should be angry at the men who appropriated the language of black women yet we’re angry at the women? Isn’t that the usual sexism of expecting more/better/more saintliness from women than men?

And now I’m navel gazing while Rome burns. Sorry

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 17:51

The OP made it about 'Karen', not me. Its possible to be absolutely furious about injustice without using further hateful slurs.

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 17:52

Love how this is now derailing off about white women dealing with sexism. Maybe create your own thread to discuss your own different issues and stop trying to take away from the black lives matter movement and racism being discussed on this thread?

AGrownManMadeWager · 03/06/2020 17:56

@Tonz do you know of any protests in Glasgow? I had a quick google but couldn't see anything. I must not be looking in the right place.

Sonotech · 03/06/2020 17:56

As a shire women I can not get fucking worked up over Karen. What an absolute piss take it’s being compared on this thread.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/06/2020 17:57

What’s a shire woman please?

Sonotech · 03/06/2020 17:58

Shire woman? Definitely don’t know Froddo.

Should read white

AGrownManMadeWager · 03/06/2020 17:58

George square 2pm on Sunday, just found it. I'll be there.

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 17:59

Um the OP herself said 'fuck off Karen'? I'm not comparing being murdered to being called Karen.

But words do matter, racist ones and sexist ones.

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 18:00

Its possible to be absolutely furious about injustice without using further hateful slurs.

Great. Be furious if you wish, I don't care because this isn't about you it's about innocent people being murdered because of the colour of their skin and the insituational racism that's been prevalent for way too long in the USA and the UK. That's the issue at hand here and maybe start your own thread about your dislike of a phrase instead of hijacking this one.

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 18:02

I'm not hijacking anything. The OP said 'fuck off Karen'. Read the OP.

Sonotech · 03/06/2020 18:03

That's the issue at hand here and maybe start your own thread about your dislike of a phrase instead of hijacking this one

This^^

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 18:03

I'm not furious. I meant that the OP and most other people are furious about an innocent black man being murdered. Being furious doesn't mean the words you say don't matter.

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 18:03

@MorrisZapp

Um the OP herself said 'fuck off Karen'? I'm not comparing being murdered to being called Karen.

But words do matter, racist ones and sexist ones.

Yes and now you are making this thread and the serious issue at hand about you. This is part of the problem.
Sonotech · 03/06/2020 18:05

Morriszap was the same on the other thread that got deleted. They’ve got their own agenda - just ignore

Tonz · 03/06/2020 18:05

Yep 2pm Sunday in front of the city Chambers. Edinburgh is 1pm east side of the gardens. There is a Take a knee going on right now in Glasgow City centre. Just found that out too late or I would have been there as well. I really hope there is a huge turn out of support.

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 18:05

I read the full thread and I agree with the OP's phrase. Too bad if you are offended by the use of "Karen", imagine how BAME people have been made to feel pretty much all the time with much worse terms. As a member benefitting from white privaledge I'm sure you can suck it up.

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 18:06

Thanks for the heads up @Sonotech they very obviously have their own agenda.

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 18:07

I've never used any term for black people other than black people so like fuck will I suck up your sexist slur.

AGrownManMadeWager · 03/06/2020 18:08

@MorrisZapp what is wrong with you?!
No wonder the op and others want a dedicated space to discuss these things.
I'm a white woman and I'm not offended by Karen as I try my hardest to not BE a Karen. Maybe you find it offensive as it touches a nerve?

TheHoneyBadger · 03/06/2020 18:09

Oh bugger you’ve mentioned privilege and women in the same sentence it’s all going to kick off.

Osquito · 03/06/2020 18:15

(Not black)
I would both appreciate more discussion on the issue - but also worry that it would be closed off in its own little section, making it easier for others to ignore it.

I have felt extremely shocked and so, so angry at responses over here in the UK (on other sites) questioning local protests/saying this American incident has nothing to do with us.

This is our problem too. It has always been.
Black lives matter. And not only in the most base way possible (literal life, vs death) but in the everyday living that wears a black person down - the allowances made so that others won’t feel uncomfortable, the bar being set higher, the assumptions, the ignorance, the double standards...
