All lives matter

I’ve disabled voting because today has been a lot already! I can’t deal with seeing another such stark display in % or how few people support BLM.
Is there a black Mumsnet section? I could do with somewhere to discuss race with other BAME people and Allies that doesn’t get hijacked with

•all lives matter
•what about...
•I’m oppressed too
•white people are suffering as well
•if black people would just...

Happy to hear suggestions for other forums as well. I don’t think Mumsnet is standing against racism, so i’m happy to flounce to get what I need. Which certainly isn’t the silencing of black voices whilst overt racism goes unchecked!

Hi Justine 👋 and fuck off Karen!

I'm not confident this is a 'safe space' to openly and honestly discuss this issue.

I vividly recall the response to Danny Baker and his racist tweet.

I will share a list of educators on Instagram that can assist with anti-racism learning

NurseButtercup · 03/06/2020 16:51

I also want to point out the UK is AS racist as USA.

The ONLY difference is the law on gun possession.

I am basing this statement upon MY life experience's. I'm not interested in hearing people telling me that I'm wrong.

Lucy40ishere · 03/06/2020 16:55

When people say that it should read ‘all lives matter’ it’s like when men say that there should be an international men’s day. Totally missing the point.

Black lives matter. Completely agree with the movement.

Shocked by some comments on mumsnet.

I completely agree! I'm a member of the BAME community and have lived in both USA and UK and I've experienced first hand racism in both countries, different styles but still racism.

Fair play.

I think that’s what I realised. It could effectively be a thought experiment for me for me to be interested in rather than visceral lived experience.

What I did do was go and read accounts of black people who had lived in both countries. Initially with a confirmation bias but then with a more open mind.

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that as a white person I can no more confidently say that I’m not racist than a man can say he’s not sexist. It’s too embedded in the cultural air we grow up in.

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 17:04

I'm not shocked, Mumsnet has always had an issue with racism. It's only being more noticed now due to the current events. Look at the thread about the central park lady for a good example.

MamaLion1319 · 03/06/2020 17:05

I agree! This whole issue has even caused me and my partner to split up! I am glad I have come off social media as I hate to think of how many friends I would have to unfriend. Theirs no point defending BLM and why it's not an all lives matter/ white lives matter or even in mine and my now ex's case travellers lives matter because it's so irrelevant to the issue at hand! I've been called a racist for not rebuking BLM!
Mixed mama here, identify as black more often than not xx

TheHoneyBadger · 03/06/2020 17:08

But that makes me deeply fucking sad in what it says for the the relationships of black and white people and the relationships between men and women. There’s a gulf of experience and perspective.

I never want to get married and sometimes wish I could magic all of the men out of the conversation/room/workplace. So I have to accept black peoples exhaustion at dealing with white people.

Kazziek · 03/06/2020 17:14

As a white person, I'm doing all I can to educate myself and do better to support people who are not white. I have been appalled to hear from friends the stuff that they deal with day to day, just in the UK. I thought we were all better than that.
My name is Karen though. Does that mean I should fuck off and not be part of any movement for change?

Mumoblue · 03/06/2020 17:20

I've been gobsmacked at the "All lives matter" and the "yeah-but-no-but" waffle going on here!
Saying "All lives matter" when clearly we are not all treated the same is helpful to no one and usually just means "Let's not talk about it".

I have found the news coming out of America to be so upsetting.
I'm a white person in the UK so I don't know how helpful it is for me to say it but of course Black Lives Matter. We need to do better than this, and teach our children to be actively anti-racist.

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 17:22

We're racist for not accepting Karen as a factual descriptor for a racist woman, apparently. Fuck off indeed.

Heko · 03/06/2020 17:24

According to Boris Johnson, "Everybodies lives matter".

GreytExpectations · 03/06/2020 17:29

Nobody seemed to care when offensive memes calling black women "Sheniqua" were circulating or care about the long list of derogatory terms used to describe BAME people. I think white women can deal with the Karen meme, it's not even comparable to what black people have to deal with on a daily basis.
dementedpixie · 03/06/2020 17:30

The whole Karen thing is very annoying and it's not even my name. I

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 17:32

I didn't say it was comparable, and I've never heard of the other meme you referenced.

I won't accept a sexist shit meme to describe racist people when the violence objected to is almost exclusively committed by men.

TeamLannister · 03/06/2020 17:36

I agree with you. Also white.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/06/2020 17:40

I never see racist memes unless a friend who is black shares them to highlight their presence. Kids would get battered (at best verbally but likely worse) at my school (teacher) if they called someone sheniqa or were in any way overtly racist. So I’m a bit sheltered maybe.

I do find it really sad that men are now using Karen to silence women.

overworkedandstressed · 03/06/2020 17:40

Of course Black lives matter. It is not enough to write a few words of support online anymore. If anyone is interested there are various peaceful protests against racism and discrimination organised throughout the uk. All we are asked to do is turn up wearing a face mask and maintain a 2 metre distance. Find one near your area and show support in person. I have many black friends who say white faces at the protests would be a very welcome sight. Mine will be there side by side with anyone else who chooses to show up.
This issue needs sorting but black people cant do it alone. We must stand together. Its just a shame with Covid many people who otherwise would show support will be unable to attend. If you can find one near your area please consider going. Your support will mean a lot

Kazziek · 03/06/2020 17:40

I completely agree with the PP who pointed out that POC have been called, and are stilled called, many offensive names. I don'r recognise the one quoted.
It shouldn't follow that because one group of people are insulted, others should be insulted in return. My name is Karen and I very much object to being targeted as a racist bully simply because of my name. Why not called racist bullys 'cunts', given that"s what they are?

TheHoneyBadger · 03/06/2020 17:41

There is a lot of appropriation though.

Ethelfleda · 03/06/2020 17:43

It’s depressing OP.

I’m white - and I can’t believe how ignorant I was to the sheer size of the issue still. I thought racism was something being slowly confined to history and that the vast majority would get this. It appears I was wrong and I am ashamed.

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 17:44

As I said on a previous thread, I've never used a racial slur in my life and would report anyone who did. Likewise, I don't have to accept sexist slurs.

Tonz · 03/06/2020 17:47

@overworkedandstressed I will be attending one in Edinburgh June 7th at 1pm with many friends of all colour. You are right words are not enough and never were. We must act now and fight this fight together
