All lives matter

I’ve disabled voting because today has been a lot already! I can’t deal with seeing another such stark display in % or how few people support BLM.
Is there a black Mumsnet section? I could do with somewhere to discuss race with other BAME people and Allies that doesn’t get hijacked with

•all lives matter
•what about...
•I’m oppressed too
•white people are suffering as well
•if black people would just...

Happy to hear suggestions for other forums as well. I don’t think Mumsnet is standing against racism, so i’m happy to flounce to get what I need. Which certainly isn’t the silencing of black voices whilst overt racism goes unchecked!

Hi Justine 👋 and fuck off Karen!

I swear the Internet brings out the worst in people. Can we not derail the thread please?

You're right OP, Dr Martin Luther King marched in protest of systemic racism. He was shot. There is no right way a POC can protest, it is truly saddening.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 04/06/2020 21:58

@GreytExpectations

Karen wasnt initially used as a sexist term. It was used as a way of labelling racist white women who would look down on black people or call police on them for no reason. By claiming its misyongy you are dismissing the original meaning behind the phrase and turning the thread into "whataboutery"
It certainly isn't used in that way anymore is it? It's come to mean women of a particular age, with a particular hairstyle, asking to speak to the manager at every opportunity, right? If "Karen" isn't a sexist or misogynistic term what's the male equivalent of a Karen?
Crispsnatcher · 04/06/2020 22:01

If anyone is interested- George Floyd's memorial Live, I'm watching.

Ive seen plenty of means refer to "Chad" as the male equivalent

GreytExpectations · 04/06/2020 22:02

Memes* not means

So was Chad created by the black community as a racist, middle aged man?

Can I suggest ignoring derailers?

Crispsnatcher · 04/06/2020 22:17

Great idea Honey 🙂 it would be lovely to have a space where BAME issues can be discussed. I've not made my mind up regarding whether having a separate board is a good idea though. On the one hand it's a good idea. On the other hand I think it I'd important to use platforms such as this to bring the issues into the wider community. If others start to feel marginalised, nothing can grow from it. Need time to weigh this up.

bluetongue · 04/06/2020 22:27

I think black lives matter and I’m white.

I will admit to not always agreeing with some views such as silence on social media means you are complicit in racism. I’m listening, I’m learning but it’s not the same as experiencing racism so for now I feel it’s not the right time to voice my opinion.

Crispsnatcher · 04/06/2020 22:55

I wish most would listen, blue.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 05/06/2020 01:15

Gosh darn it, white women are upset at the naughty black women.

Sounds about white.

Carrington12 · 05/06/2020 01:30

I think there's 2 issues here with the recent tragedy re Mr Floyd. From videos I've seen online police brutality is affecting every race in the US. More so Black Americans however I don't think 'all lives matter' is taking away the importance of the issue of racism. The people of America see that the force the police use needs to be investigated and dealt with for the sake of EVERYONE. Yes white supremacy over there is absolute madness and black people are treated far worse than white people but looking at videos online there is black officers beating black males... There's Hispanic officers shooting black teenagers....the US police need hanging for their actions against everyone but yes I agree black people do get treated worse and there's no excuse for that however I don't think anyone should be shot down in flames for being concerned about everyone's welfare. The police are in authority to keep them safe, not bully and endanger the American people's lives.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 05/06/2020 01:39

Carrington RTFT, especially check out the links.

Nousernamehistory · 05/06/2020 01:41

The only silver lining is that I believe some white people have truly had their eyes opened to the ugly racism on here and in the UK in general.

Good idea. I'm gonna stop replying to all the Karen posts now.

You need a tag team

MashedPotatoBrainz · 05/06/2020 11:23

This thread is unbelievable. In a week that has seen the most shocking treatment of black people make headline news all over the world, to come on a thread about it and derail it with whinging about hurty feelings at a silly meme name, tells us that you've bloody earnt that name. You need it tatooing across your fucking foreheads.

Exactly this.

Have a word with yourselves.

peachgreen · 05/06/2020 11:30

@mashedpotatobrainz Hear fucking hear. No thread has ever summed up the blinkered, bigoted, whiny cry-baby white privilege of the vast majority of Mumsnet posters like this one has. Christ almighty.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

LadyGAgain · 05/06/2020 12:44

I feel ashamed. I feel disgusted. I feel so very sad. I don't understand how or why people are marginalised by their skin colour but I of course know they are. It's disgusting.

It has to end.

Please can someone help me to know what I can do to help move things forward.

Racism is vile. Socio-economic divides based on race have to stop.

How can I help?

Sirthanksalot · 05/06/2020 13:25

agree. There are some shocker pile-ons here at times but this is the most reactionary, gaslighty whataboutery I've heard so far. Only hoping that most that haven't contributed don't feel this way.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/06/2020 13:59

I can do what I can in work (secondary teacher) and personal life. I’d suggest one thing people who live in cities where stop and search happens is not just walk on by. Stand there, support, ask if the person is ok, if you can contact anyone, reassure them of their rights etc especially who it’s a young person aka a child. Be a witness and record if you can.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/06/2020 14:10

I’d be happy to hear actually what black mothers of teens think I can do in the classroom to better support their children. I’ve never seen that advice and I think I need it. Particularly when it comes to helping try and improve behaviour and engagement of black boys who don’t want to hear from a white woman “telling them what to do”. That’s not a criticism just a vibe I’m met with sometimes and sometimes told to my face Hmm

TheHoneyBadger · 05/06/2020 14:15

Thinking on it the Karen thing may be relatively recent but the resentment towards white women (I think less so with white men) telling them what to do (unavoidably really as a teacher who has to hold authority as part of her job) has been around a long time in my teaching experience with some black young men. It’s hard to know how to best handle that as a teacher.
