All lives matter

I’ve disabled voting because today has been a lot already! I can’t deal with seeing another such stark display in % or how few people support BLM.
Is there a black Mumsnet section? I could do with somewhere to discuss race with other BAME people and Allies that doesn’t get hijacked with

•all lives matter
•what about...
•I’m oppressed too
•white people are suffering as well
•if black people would just...

Happy to hear suggestions for other forums as well. I don’t think Mumsnet is standing against racism, so i’m happy to flounce to get what I need. Which certainly isn’t the silencing of black voices whilst overt racism goes unchecked!

Hi Justine 👋 and fuck off Karen!

No, OP, but you were wanting to 'engage' posters. You derailed your own thread from the off. I'm not called Karen, so I'm not offended by that, but your double standards are hypocritical and that undermines the important point you're trying to make. You did that by changing the tone of your OP by being a goady fucker, waving at Justine and perpetuating a slur.

mbosnz · 04/06/2020 18:41

If you are not intolerant ( I can be very intolerant, particularly of racists, yes of misogyny and sexism, but I can't get worked up about Karen, I can understand why people who are called Karen can be!), annoying (equally, I'm sure I can be very annoying), and racist (I'm working quite hard on becoming anti-racist) and don't complain about everything (I try hard not to, but yes, I along with every one I know can have a good whinge at times), then why would you worry about it?

I'm comfortable with who I am, what I am, and if people deal in stereotypes, that's about them, not about me. And obviously, in this instance, OP rightly, was heller fired up about an extremely serious, horrific, and frustrating and angering issue and event. I don't think 'Karen' should be the main thing to be taken from her original post.

I think if anything, latching on to that reinforces her request to MNHQ.

I worry about it because that's my name, and it's become a byword for something awful.

It's not OK to counter racism with a different kind of prejudice. It's like me experiencing sexism and throwing out a racial slur in response. It's a complete disconnect and results in a very important topic becoming overshadowed by something else.

GreytExpectations · 04/06/2020 18:47

It's sad that posters on here are more upset by the use of Karen than by the years of oppression Black people have faced. But hey, this is Mumsnet so I'm not suprised.

Sonotech · 04/06/2020 18:50
@MorrisZapp I thought you were leaving? a thread to ask about a space to discuss issues of race that doesn’t get derailed by what about... has become all about poor Karen!
You couldn’t make it up!!

There's a simple solution to that really. Don't use a sexist slur and people won't get angry.

OP doesn't get a free pass because of what's happening in the US at the moment.

TheHoneyBadger · 04/06/2020 18:54

And the seasons they go round and round...

Shall I put enough track on during this interval?

You’re so vain, I bet you think this song is about you...

TheHoneyBadger · 04/06/2020 18:56

@MagicKingdomDizzy

And yes, starting a BAME section in Mumsnet would be a solution. Then posters could be as prejudiced as they like (as long as they're not being racist of course) whilst being surrounded by people who obviously feel the same (as evidenced on this thread).
Wow did you just say all bame people obviously feel the same way on the basis of one thread?

You keep digging. I’ll get popcorn

Scoobyboob · 04/06/2020 18:58

Thanks so much to all the white people explaining to POC what Karen means to us. We know who she is, we’ve lived with her our whole lives and we know that her particular way of displaying her racism is rarely violent but it is nasty, pervasive and dangerous.

That's the response of someone who hasn't got a better argument against a valid point.

And yes I love Carly Simon, so hit play. I prefer 'Let The River Run' though.

Scoobyboob · 04/06/2020 18:59

I should say I know who she is to me!

I can understand you feeling like that.

However, have you ever faced the very real possibility of being murdered by the police because your name is Karen? As a white middle aged woman, have you ever faced the possibility of being murdered because you went running?

MagicKingdomDizzy · 04/06/2020 19:01

TheHoneyBadger

Feel free to highlight the part where I said ALL BAME POSTERS FEEL THE SAME WAY.

Oh wait, I didn't.

mbosnz · 04/06/2020 19:04

Lovely poster held up by a protester, one side says 'Karens against Police Brutality, the other said, 'I'd like to speak to the Manager of Systemic Racism please'. . .

MagicKingdomDizzy · 04/06/2020 19:04

Does the discrimination someone else faces means I should face a different sort?

Allinadaystwerk · 04/06/2020 19:05

There is a difference brtween being called 'A' Karen and the
people who happened be named Karen. We ALL know this. It's the same as the associations we place on other names such as nigel or norman. Sexism is rife and ugly. No doubt about it. But we are talking about racial inequality and injustice. how can we watch a man being murdered for 9 MINUTES live on our screens, while he begged for air and cried for his mother and then say but what about the poor women who are labelled a Karen. He was murdered before pur eyes and he is the last in a very long line victims of the same bike brutality. Ffs have some humanity. Let us speak thec truth. Let us empaphise and shpw empathy. I know you know how to do this! You simply say "that is messed up and deplorable. It must be so difficult for you as black people to witness this all the time...if I were you I'd be scared too. I hope things get better.. " you might even go a step further and say is there anything I can do to help? And then you might be a real fellow human and join the movement for change. That's all. Just see that its is messed up. Full stop. Sexism homophobia and all the other injustice is separate to BLM we just want you to look at this alone for a minute. Give it a smidge of unrivalled attention for one minute. And if you can't do that then just leave it alone.

calmnecollective · 04/06/2020 19:05

Sorry. But ffs.

Allinadaystwerk · 04/06/2020 19:08

@mbosnz great poster! I have seen some great poster slogans but that one must have been made by a clever Karen.. an ally.. a friend to the cause, a human with empathy, thanks for your posts. They help. ✊🏽

MagicKingdomDizzy · 04/06/2020 19:09

It was the OPs choice to take attention away from the importance of her post by using a sexist slur.

Just as it's my choice to challenge it.

I am a female runner. I know I run (see what I did there?) the risk of rape and murder when I run, because I'm female,. That's not because I'm a white middle aged female, who might or might not be called Karen. The stat's as to how many of us are, is horrifying.

The stat's of how many black men are murdered, sometimes by those who are supposed to protect and serve them in their community? I find that terrifying. I imagine how I'd feel if I were the mother of a black son, who might have gone out for a walk, or to the skate park - it's hard enough when it's my white daughter.
