You tube influencer "rehomes" adopted son

Myka Stauffer a popular YouTube and Instagram influencer raised considerable funds to adopt a child from China, the child a boy she called Huxley had brain damage, non verbal autism and behavioural difficulties. Myka has 4 biological children and adopted 4 year Huxley 18 months ago.

After quite some time of not posting anything about him and after repeated questions from her "followers" she recently uploaded a video where in her words she's "rehomed him" and he was with people much more able and suited to deal with his complex needs.

The main issue people have is the money she raised for his adoption and the secrecy regarding this at one point one of her followers noticed that she had put a video up of her repainting his room and turning it into her daughters room with no mention of him.

Apparently it was like she wanted people to forgot she has ever adopted him and people are furious.

I can see both sides as it must have been a complex and difficult decision especially if they couldn't meet his needs. She had to consider her other children... one a small baby but on the other hand she wasn't very transparent about it...

Also there are allegations of her using duct tape on his hands and I have seen a video of her mocking him because of his meltdowns so hopefully he is now with people more suited to his needs.

Thoughts?

Regimes him? She actually used those words? He's not a bloody dog FFS.

If I called her what I want to call her my post would be deleted so I'll leave it to your imagination.

VettiyaIruken · 28/05/2020 10:28

Regimes? FFS. Rehomed!!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/05/2020 10:28

I’d love to know if she would rehome any of her biological children if they had additional needs?

Duvetday8 · 28/05/2020 10:29

How can you rehome a child, he is not an animal

iamabox · 28/05/2020 10:30

I think she is despicable. You dont "rehome" a child....

Inforthelonghaul · 28/05/2020 10:30

This is truly shocking. I so hope the child had gone to people who will actually care for him. Her other children must worry if they’re safe or in danger of being rehomed too.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/05/2020 10:31

Her callousness towards him is horrible.

However he is probably a lot better off out of that situation.

Inforthelonghaul · 28/05/2020 10:32

Mind you I also wonder how anyone allowed a child with those complex needs to be adopted by a large family. They were always going to have issues and need way more attention than could ever be available.

TinySleepThief · 28/05/2020 10:32

Its horrific. I wonder if she would rehome one of her biological children if they had additional needs. It honestly just looks like she adopted him to get views on YouTube. Sad

fivesecondrule · 28/05/2020 10:33

I've been reading about this all morning- it's just awful. Apparently her followers (and her income) went up during the adoption process and she was looking to adopt again. The videos that featured Huxley were the most watched on her channel. In other words she's made money from him.

Poor little boy I can't imagine how confused he must be. Hopefully he's with a loving family now.

MrsOfBebbanburg · 28/05/2020 10:33
Shock

What the actual fuck!

Was there definitely a child? Could she have pretended she was adopting just to make money? That would be the best scenario tbh. The alternative is just horrifying. What country does she live in? If the U.K. can you report her to social services or the police?

Fandoozle1 · 28/05/2020 10:33

I just hope the little lad is now with a loving family that can support him.

P0lka · 28/05/2020 10:33

Hopefully he's found a family now who will care for him as he always should have been.

I watched a few videos around the time of his adoption - it was clear it would never work. They were trying to shape a non-NT child to fit their life, rather than shaping their life to accommodate him.

Additionally, many of his 'issues' appear to have been caused by early trauma (leaving birth family - leaving foster care - leaving country of birth) - this will likely only be compounded by Myka and James giving up on him.

MrsOfBebbanburg · 28/05/2020 10:35

Xpost. So people actually saw the child on video. Sad that poor baby. I can’t fathom this.

TinySleepThief · 28/05/2020 10:36

Was there definitely a child?

Yes there was 100% a real child at the centre of all this. He made he quite a but if money and got her lots of hits on YouTube.
O believe she lives in America.

I can also imagine how its going to mess up her other children. They will quite literally worry that she will send them away if they become too difficult.

P0lka · 28/05/2020 10:36

~3 years worth of regular blogging, and I Instagram posts where she says how she "couldn't imagine life without him"

MotheringShites · 28/05/2020 10:36

I think my problem here would also lie with the authorities who approved this adoption. The circumstances sound very unhealthy for a child with such specific needs.

GrimmsFairytales · 28/05/2020 10:36

@TinySleepThief

This sums up my feelings on it. It was done for the views and the money they made from posting about the adoption / his struggles. I bet none of that money has gone with him. Sad
fivesecondrule · 28/05/2020 10:37

Yes he was on lots of videos apparently @MrsOfBebbanburg. I'm not familiar with the woman at all, today was the first I've ever heard of her (mummy vloggers aren't my thing) and I can't even bear to go and look at her youtube now as it will give her more views and probably more advertising revenue!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/05/2020 10:37

Rehomed is an awful word to use about a child which was legally theirs.

If the adoption/match wasn't working out then she should have the common decency to addresses it properly.

GrimmsFairytales · 28/05/2020 10:39

I can also imagine how its going to mess up her other children. They will quite literally worry that she will send them away if they become too difficult.

Oh definitely. Can you imagine one day having a brother and the next he's gone. Sad How horrifying to think you can be gotten rid off if mum and dad find you and your behaviour too difficult.

Glitterkitten24 · 28/05/2020 10:39

I felt so sad reading about it earlier- she talks about ‘rehoming’ him and him finding his ‘forever home’ like he was a dog. It is sickening.

WarmSausageTea · 28/05/2020 10:40

Disgraceful. Poor Huxley, I hope he’s in a better home now.

TriangleBingoBongo · 28/05/2020 10:40

Mind you I also wonder how anyone allowed a child with those complex needs to be adopted by a large family. They were always going to have issues and need way more attention than could ever be available.

Precisely.
This whole thing sounds awful.

Spinakker · 28/05/2020 10:41

I disagree. I think she had good intentions but wasn't able to manage in the end. Maybe a smaller family would be better for him. I'm sure it was not an easy decision. Maybe she underestimated how hard it would be to raise a child with autism.
