You tube influencer "rehomes" adopted son

Myka Stauffer a popular YouTube and Instagram influencer raised considerable funds to adopt a child from China, the child a boy she called Huxley had brain damage, non verbal autism and behavioural difficulties. Myka has 4 biological children and adopted 4 year Huxley 18 months ago.

After quite some time of not posting anything about him and after repeated questions from her "followers" she recently uploaded a video where in her words she's "rehomed him" and he was with people much more able and suited to deal with his complex needs.

The main issue people have is the money she raised for his adoption and the secrecy regarding this at one point one of her followers noticed that she had put a video up of her repainting his room and turning it into her daughters room with no mention of him.

Apparently it was like she wanted people to forgot she has ever adopted him and people are furious.

I can see both sides as it must have been a complex and difficult decision especially if they couldn't meet his needs. She had to consider her other children... one a small baby but on the other hand she wasn't very transparent about it...

Also there are allegations of her using duct tape on his hands and I have seen a video of her mocking him because of his meltdowns so hopefully he is now with people more suited to his needs.

Thoughts?

Oh... yes, that video just above my previous post.

Alternatively, she naively thought she'd cope by being determined, and is heart broken that it broke down.

I'm a foster carer who had a placement break down when we'd expected it to be permanent. It's devastating. It's a huge trauma on all sides.

I would have sympathy if she hadn't exploited the adoption for views and got her followers to crowd source the adoption. She also duck taped his thumb to stop him sucking it, whilst her older children continued to suck theirs. She also refused to pay for a more expensive therapy and in the video on her IG story she was wearing a Cartier bracket that costs around £600, plus they moved into a mansion. if you look at the channels growth it all started around the adoption. Then she got pregnant, which seemed like an odd decision if she was already struggling and the pregnancy was planned according to her videos. I highly doubt she would 'rehome' any of her biological children.

That's appalling, Candles. I've only heard of her in the context of her adoption breakdown. I had some sympathy because adopters can be very naive about the problems children may have and their own ability to cope with them. My own history of family breakdown under difficult conditions obviously coloured my perception. But my fostered children got more attention, better care, than my birth DCs, because their need was so urgent and severe. She should never have been able to adopt so publicly, displaying the boy, his needs and their inability to cope for all to see. It was a ridiculous extra pressure, and if the desire to look good influenced her decision then that's pitiful.

It gets better, they purposely sought out a child with additional needs so they could adopt quickly and adopted out of birth order, meaning her two youngest were only months apart. She originally thought he had a brain tumor. If you want to know more look for videos on them on YouTube lots of commentators have done loads of research on this couple, The Dad Challenge Podcast is a good one.

They also went to Bali during the phase where he was removed from the home but didn't confirm to the viewers what was happening. She just kept posting photos of her on holiday with her youngest and her husband, whilst denying there was an issue, eventually they were forced to do the infamous apology video.

OK I'm not sure how I ended up on this thread but found myself gripped by the saga and now I have to say... hold UP. This really puts her in the worst light imaginable.

Did she think was adopting a kid who was going to die? I bet she'd have got lots of views for the funeral!

That’s so sad @oakleaffy. I remember that thread and that poster. She was an amazing person.

@MehrsMama there is also a current poster - bloodywhitecat

She initially thought he had a brain tumour?

I wouldn’t have put it past them to have got into adopting him thinking they’d only have to look after him for a few years Sad

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 23/01/2021 08:34

Yep, they thought he had a brain tumor. She used to be a nurse and stated she felt confident she could deal with any diagnosis. She ended up in court whilst nursing after she pushed a drug cart into a pregnant co-worker, so she no longer works as a nurse. At least one doctor in the US warned her about adopting the child, after they had reviewed the medical information, she ignored that advice because she felt she knew better. She also wanted to adopt a second child. The whole story is so sad and if you ever saw the apology video it's all about them and not the child. They made some serious money adopting that child and I don't think he'll see any of it.

And they are still taking in the money since her husband is running his very successful channel. But I guess at least they are not vlogging about family life anymore (though I suspect she’ll attempt to relaunch and rebrand herself sometime this year).

I was so shocked by this.
It seems undoubtably that MS is a massive narcissist.

BubblyBarbara · 23/01/2021 14:39

People shouldn’t give money to random strangers on the internet if they want to judge about how it’s used. She’s free to rehome her children however she likes and it sounds like this one is much happier with their new owners
