To be hopeful that the pandemic is easing?

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:14

Today stats

2405 confirmed cases (with more testing)

118 deaths

Two weeks ago (so a Sunday when figures are lower)

3534 cases

268 deaths

Things are improving? Even two weeks after an expected peak (due to VE Day).

We are getting there?

Who knows- originally we were “going to get there” by flattening the curve- well the curve is nose diving and it’s still not enough.

Newbie1999 · 24/05/2020 19:16

I believe so.

SpillTheTeaa · 24/05/2020 19:17

I hope so. I really do! I remain positive. It's all I can do otherwise I'll loose my mind!

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:18

I'm loving the positivity!

OP posts:
Ohfrigginghellers · 24/05/2020 19:18

Fingers crossed eh 🤞

Chillipeanuts · 24/05/2020 19:18

Really hope so.

UnderTheBus · 24/05/2020 19:20

It is looking promising. Interesting that the virus has followed a very similar pattern in almost every country - including those with stronger lockdown (Spain) and weaker lockdowns (Japan).
Maybe this is just the course the virus takes and it will "burn itself out" eventually

Ethelfleda · 24/05/2020 19:20

YANBU OP
It was always going to ease at some point - and we have been in lockdown for long enough to have such an effect.
You make a good point about 2 weeks post VE Day though - hadn’t thought of that.

user1000000000000000001 · 24/05/2020 19:20

My theory is that if by June 22nd numbers haven't shot up schools will reopen normally very quickly

GoldenOmber · 24/05/2020 19:21

Really hope so. Very encouraged to see a lot of European countries taking steps back to normal without seeing cases start shooting up again.

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:21

I am loving this thread! I've spent too long on negative threads, this has cheered me no end.

OP posts:
transformandriseup · 24/05/2020 19:25

Fingers crossed. I can't wait to see the numbers fall to under 100, even if it's just the weekend figures.

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:27

@transformandriseup agreed!!!

I’m really hopeful but I won’t be rushing out to live life like ‘normal’ when shops and hospitality reopen. I’m looking forward to not being stuck in my house but I’ll definitely be more mindful of my movements, and hopefully others will take a similar attitude.

I’m starting a PhD in July and if I’m required to be on campus a couple of days a week, I won’t be taking public transport like I’d planned. I’ll be sucking up the cost and nightmare parking situation to drive in for a while.

I’m dying for a haircut and a brow wax, plus I got a generous spa voucher for my 30th a couple of weeks ago... dreaming of the day I can comfortably do all of that!

OLLIE2011 · 24/05/2020 19:28

I keep seeing more about the virus burning itself out. I really hope it's true. We need to see our loved ones asap.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 24/05/2020 19:30

I am also very hopeful OP and that is a lovely feeling.

I know there is a lot of conflicting opinion out there but I am reading a lot of what Prof Sunetra Gupta and Prof Michael Levitt are saying. Both are mega brains and highly respected.

Anyway, both think there is strong evidence to suggest many in society are naturally immune to the virus. Both think there is evidence which says the virus has a natural life cycle and it is burning itself out. Plus they are arguing it's not nearly as lethal as first thought. The fact we are 2 weeks on from VE Day and there has been no sharp rise in cases thus far is really really positive too. I still have a healthy respect for the virus and we need more time to see what is going to happen next but I think there are so many reasons to be hopeful after a really scary time.

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:35

Sone wise words here, I'm not saying it's back to "normal" but with sensible measure we're getting there aren't we?

Family
Haircut and colour (clearly the pandemic has turned me grey Grin)
Coffee after a walk

So much to look carefully forward too!

OP posts:
understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:36

I'm not sure why I crossed out carefully!

🙄

amusedbush · 24/05/2020 19:44

@understandmenow

Sorry, I hope I didn’t come across as being shitty when I said ‘normal’! I’m seriously mourning my life from a few months ago but I agree with you and I’m feeling very hopeful about the progress we’ve collectively made.

I’m really looking forward to a day that I can just walk out of my house to meet a friend for coffee.

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:46

@amusedbush oh no you didn't, I hope I don't don't make you feel that way. Sorry if I did.

Cheers to the new "normal", I can cope with that as long as I can see family.

ThanksThanks

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 24/05/2020 19:46

The current situation is promising. This is the optimum time of year to be easing restrictions and cautiously restoring some normality.

I hope that autumn and the return of the cold and flu season doesn't return an advantage back to the virus as optimum conditions return, but that is all the more reason to keep our immune systems up to date by being out and about in society.

Ultimately the virus is not the only hazard and cause of mortality in the world and we have to live with it as we do with a plethora of other infections.

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 19:48

@BogRollBOGOF very wise words.

OP posts:
amusedbush · 24/05/2020 19:48

@understandmenow

I just panicked - I hate upsetting people! Grin

This thread has cheered me right up. Everything is so doom and gloom at the moment, it’s nice to hear from fellow hopeful people!

Thingsthatgo · 24/05/2020 19:49

I went into work this week for the first time in two months. I was so happy to be there, and we started to make plans for the future of the business (it’s just me and the boss). It felt so good to make plans, even if they have to change along the way.
My calendar is empty, everything has been crossed out; weddings, holidays, days out. I want to fill it with plans again, and it feels like that will be soon...

DamnYankee · 24/05/2020 19:49

Yes

The death toll here has not increased (state in US).
I am very hopeful! Also like what Dr. Fauci is saying about the vaccine that is being developed by Moderna.

Maybe it will burn out, like the SARS virus. Let's hope so. In the meantime, my hope is that people will learn to live with it and use common sense while they do!
