Today stats

2405 confirmed cases (with more testing)

118 deaths

Two weeks ago (so a Sunday when figures are lower)

3534 cases

268 deaths

Things are improving? Even two weeks after an expected peak (due to VE Day).

We are getting there?

Giving this thread a bump as it’s such a nice one Smile

TiddyTid · 25/05/2020 11:29

Yes good thread OP. Here's looking forward to the new normal!

understandmenow · 25/05/2020 11:53

Thank you @Ethelfleda Smile

I’ve seen a couple of reports that the figure for the past 24 hours is 77 deaths. I know there will be a spike tomorrow as there always is on a Tuesday but the death rate seems to be dropping quite sharply recently.

Echobelly · 25/05/2020 17:39

I think things are on the right trajectory and I don't believe that individual inconsiderate actions (walking too close to people, one person going into another's house) or going to busy places outdoors are going to cause 'a second wave'.

Opening pubs and clubs and indoor places of large gatherings, yes, that might cause it.

I think we're going to look at ways of returning more normality to low-risk people (this very good BBC article explains that for people not in the risk group there is literally no greater statistical likelihood of death than at any other time www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52758024 ) and improving shielding of the vulnerable.

The rest of this year is not going to look anything like normality and I think we have to accept that, but maybe by next spring we'll be seeing something more like life as we know it.

But if we play our cards right this might be as bad as it gets

Geekster1963 · 25/05/2020 17:42

Thank you for this thread OP it’s just what I needed to read.

Livelovebehappy · 25/05/2020 17:47

Everything back to normal it seems whether or not. Bolton Abbey up in the North today was absolutely ram jammed! Not a chance of any social distancing going on. I wasn’t there btw. Pics on social media. I’m all for easing lockdown, but it seems unless the police are going to step in, that people have already decided it’s done.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/05/2020 17:48

What a cheering thread. I hit a real low at the weekend. Probably due to reading too many negative threads.

It would be fantastic if the virus naturally fades away. Where has Chris Whitty said he think is its fading? Spoke to a family member at the weekend who works with him and that’s not what they said.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 17:50

Everything back to normal it seems whether or not

Other than schools, unis, pubs, restaurants, cafes, museums, theatres, cinemas, clubs, gyms, swimming pools, hairdressers, salons and most shops being shut... other than public transport reduced to the minimum...other than much non Covid medical care cancelled...other than not being able to visit your family... then yeah, everything's right back to normal.

Epigram · 25/05/2020 17:53

I am really hopeful that things are getting better - there are some very promising signs. It's all looking much more positive than a few weeks ago!

grumpyorange · 25/05/2020 17:54

It's the weekend and a bank holiday. The numbers always drop much much lower and then rise again.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 17:54

Yes but they are still lower than they were last weekend, which in turn was lower than the previous weekend.

The trend is consistently downwards.

KitchenConfidential · 25/05/2020 17:57

I honestly don’t want to be the pessimist here, but it’s hard to get too excited when there are now reports like this

understandmenow · 25/05/2020 17:59

@grumpyorange but still lower than this time last weekend? So that's a positive?

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 17:59

121 deaths and 1625 positive tests reported. The number of people tested is unavailable though. Still, heading in the right direction.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 18:01

@KitchenConfidential there are a few threads on this already. I don't think a flare up at one small hospital in the entire country is anything to worry about yet. Worth keeping an eye on to see what happens around the rest of the UK.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 18:02

Not this again. So a very small, underresourced A&E dept had to temporarily close, as A&E depts do all the time, and as this one in particular - which shuts at 10pm nightly - does regularly?

Hardly a game changer.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/05/2020 18:08

This is a great thread!Grin

I am feeling quite optimistic at the moment with the figures trending consistently downwards.

I am a secondary teacher and back on June 15th with small groups of Y10/12 students.

I am living in hope we will be able to do school as 'normal' in Sept. Maybe not have assemblies or external trips but at least have lessons as normal. Our headteacher latest message said she was also hopeful of this.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/05/2020 18:51

Weston hospital is regularly closing. It closed at night for months before. It’s a tiny hospital for a huge area. I think it’s badly run or something. It’s honestly not unusual for it to shut.

HeadSpin5 · 25/05/2020 19:00

Great thread 😊

amusedbush · 25/05/2020 19:05

@Waxonwaxoff0

Ah, the same report I looked at a couple of hours ago has updated from 77 to 121. It did say earlier that those were the hospital deaths so maybe the higher figure includes external deaths now.

Still, I’m heartening to see the downward trend week on week.

amusedbush · 25/05/2020 19:05

*heartened

Paddingtonthebear · 25/05/2020 19:07

Is it easing in all regions of the UK now? Only last week the news reports were saying that the North East had 4,320 new coronavirus cases every day and Yorkshire was worst-hit for new infections

grumpyorange · 25/05/2020 19:09

It is still jumping up and down. Also Somerset have closed their hospitals again due to such an increase of numbers.

LesLavandes · 25/05/2020 19:10

Ot from what I saw today in Brighton area
