Today stats

2405 confirmed cases (with more testing)

118 deaths

Two weeks ago (so a Sunday when figures are lower)

3534 cases

268 deaths

Things are improving? Even two weeks after an expected peak (due to VE Day).

We are getting there?

@strugglingwithdeciding it's been 3 and a half weeks since VE day. It will be 4 weeks on Friday.

Chillipeanuts · 02/06/2020 08:58

“I just don't understand the need to come and post that on a lovely positive thread that is bringing a lot of people hope. There is lots of room on the rest of the forum to post about that and find space to talk about how horrible the situation is.”

Well that’s me told!
Point taken. I’ll get my coat.

understandmenow · 04/06/2020 17:55

Things are still moving in the right direction! Let's keep up the positive vibe and the hope!

OP posts:
Swiftsseason · 04/06/2020 18:06

Op I'm feeling extremely hopeful!

It's sad I think that common sense stuff like wearing a mask wasn't adopted sooner but I do think that new measures announced today re public transport and masks will help enormously!

Especially as we head into winter.

It's common sense to all wear masks!

The new measures in school etc will also help, ie less class children in class, the special measures in shops etc...

All will help try and control it over winter. It's winter I'm worried about!

understandmenow · 04/06/2020 18:41

I don't understand why the masks weren't compulsory before? Anyway, I'm currently going into London (2/3 days a week), the trains are empty. I suppose when the shops open it'll be busier.

OP posts:
Khione · 04/06/2020 21:49

Whilst I can see the sense in masks on public transport, I'm pleased that they aren't compulsory anywhere else because, as predicted and as I have observed people with masks and or gloves are forever touching their faces to adjust their masks and are therefor more likely to distribute the virus should they have it.

And, anyone who is even slightly hard of hearing relies at least partially on lip reading and anyone with any sensory issues may either find it impossible to wear or to cope with others in them.

They restrict breathing so anyone with asthma would also struggle.

None of that would matter if there was evidence that they really worked to reduce transmission except in hospitals and care homes where people spend a lot of time in close proximity to others.

There has been no evidence of spikes in supermarkets and most of their staff don't wear masks and if there were to be spikes from anywhere that would be the most predictable.

AllieAct · 04/06/2020 23:03

I’d say about 80% the staff in all our local supermarkets are wearing masks or plastic visors. Checkout staff are behind plastic screens.

Not disagreeing on the mask point in general (there’s so much conflicting evidence about them, it is hard to know) but don’t think supermarket workers are the best example.

Coronavirus infections have more than halved, with only one person in a thousand infected in England, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

In the first clear sign that cases are going down, the average number of people in England with Covid-19 on any given day has decreased from 130,000, reported a week ago on May 28, to 53,000.

The ONS said there were about 5,600 new infections per day, down from about 8,000 reported last week. It estimated that an average of one in 1,000 people were infected during the two weeks to May 30, compared with 2.4 in 1,000 a week earlier.

I like your post @Orangeblossom78!

Just seen it today in the Times Smile

CupCupGoose · 05/06/2020 20:30

So glad I stumbled across this thread. So fed up reading about how it's not getting any better, the second wave and how we are all going to die from the doom and gloomers.

I don't understand why so many people want to go back to a stricter lock down when the figures are so positive? I think people are actually disappointed that there hasn't been a ve day spike!

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 20:53

I think maybe there is a concern that if anything too positive then people might ease up on the measures and things might change. Maybe that is why things are not portrayed as positive

I notice in the press a tendency to go on about the R number just before the weekend

understandmenow · 07/06/2020 17:10

It's 77 today, we have seen under 100.

I know it's the weekend, but it's a great reduction.

Let's keep positive, let's keep hopeful!

OP posts:
CupCupGoose · 07/06/2020 22:11

That is very positive!

understandmenow · 08/06/2020 17:39

55 today, so it is reducing!

Let's hope it continues.

OP posts:
Orangeblossom78 · 08/06/2020 18:23

Yes and also the rate of new infections is down as well

understandmenow · 08/06/2020 18:28

That's excellent as well @Orangeblossom78.

OP posts:
AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 08/06/2020 18:58

I’m so pleased I found this thread again! I came across it a couple of weeks ago and was so pleased to see some positivity but didn’t get round to posting.
The negative posts all over MN and FB really get me down.

The news was saying 100 deaths last week, 120 the week before and 77 today so that’s 36% reduction in 2 weeks, which seems good progress

understandmenow · 10/06/2020 21:15

So @Larkspurandhollyhocks we are now coming up to five weeks from VE Day, it's all positive, do you feel more hopeful?

Everything is still looking good, more lockdown easing, I'm so glad for singles it must've been awful! Lots of shagging come Saturday for them! Good on them.

It is all still going in the right direction.

OP posts:
understandmenow · 10/06/2020 21:17

Obviously not all single people want to shag BlushConfusedConfused, but for those that do, those that don't and want company and those that just will feel happier knowing it's available.

All enjoy your "bubbles"

Thanks

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in England is continuing to fall, according to estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

Yes to everything said here, the corona-moaners are disappointed not to see a VE Day spike.

Feels like we're starting to emerge from this hideous situation & if we keep social distancing & being sensible hopefully it'll continue to improve.

Fluffybutter · 13/06/2020 07:23

Agreed. I don’t have asthma but like everything lately there are so many conflicting reports as to how useful masks are and like you say , I haven’t seen any supermarket workers in masks . I will be glad when the mask thing is over
Orangeblossom78 · 14/06/2020 21:41

36 deaths today much reduced.
