Today stats

2405 confirmed cases (with more testing)

118 deaths

Two weeks ago (so a Sunday when figures are lower)

3534 cases

268 deaths

Things are improving? Even two weeks after an expected peak (due to VE Day).

We are getting there?

We do ok 😬 actually really looking forward to a holiday spending time (and money) in bush fire ravaged areas. What a year, eh!

boredtotears11 · 26/05/2020 08:55

Best thread in ages. Lots of optimism and hope. Thanks Op.

understandmenow · 26/05/2020 08:56

Oh gosh yes you've had a shocker this year @Glowbuggy!

OP posts:
Glowbuggy · 26/05/2020 08:56

That sounds bad, it’s not really, it was all up the coast - so get in some good beach time.

JassyRadlett · 26/05/2020 08:58

@Glowbuggy I’m from Australia originally, most of my family and friends are now planning on replacing planned holidays overseas with domestic trips to places affected by the bushfires. Which is really positive I think.

I’m desperately hoping I’ll get home for Christmas but that will depend on the border....

boredtotears11 · 26/05/2020 09:04

Thinking back, we never used to do all the hugging and kissing we do now. When I was young the only hugs were just close family if that. We never hugged friends. It’ll all take time to readjust to the new normal.

understandmenow · 26/05/2020 13:14

Just watched BBC news, they've confirmed that all going in the right direction. Slight blip due to bank holiday deaths being recorded.

So all looking good at the moment.

It's looking good again tonight!!

Come on the upbeat people, let's have a cheer!

amusedbush · 26/05/2020 21:26

The figures for today are really promising, especially as Tuesday is usually a big spike after the weekend’s low records!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2020 21:28

It's looking good!

I can't wait for the shops to open up.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 26/05/2020 22:14

I’m in Scotland so obviously still behind England with loosening restrictions. I work for nhs and after a briefing the other day it turns out they our area has planned for a surge in may which hasn’t happened, then figures were submitted for a surge in July which doesn’t look like it’s going to happen either so now they have been submitted for September! I’m still waiting for the first 2 surges! Glad it hasn’t happened but I’ve had enough now, I usually love my job but dread going at the minute, patients being failed etc. No one interested unless covid 🙄

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 26/05/2020 22:29

Things feel really positive today! I'm sorry you had your lovely positive thread slightly derailed OP. I'm so grateful VE Day hasn't led to a spike in cases. And did you see someone at the WHO thinks there's a good chance we won't see a second peak?

Livingmybestliferight · 26/05/2020 22:52

I feel positive too. Back at work next week after 10 weeks off! And dare I say it....even hoping with a glimmer of hope I might be able to go to Spain in July.
Just hoping and praying things dont go tits up again.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 26/05/2020 22:54

WHO is currently speculating that the virus may just burn itself out. Hopeful times!

tobee · 26/05/2020 23:23

Where is this re WHO speculating it will burn itself out?

understandmenow · 27/05/2020 06:35

That's very interesting @AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii

As you say though the whole the health service needs to start moving again, because people will die from not CV but the fact they weren't treated because they didn't have CV.

I still feel positive this morning, I'm going back into the office (London City) on Monday.

I'm adapting my journey to the "new normal" and the positive with that means it will incorporate cycling and walking more. So not using the bus/tube to go door to door but cycle, overground and walk. Working week includes WFH part of the time, which I'm looking forward too.

I cannot wait to see London again.

Yes we are now on the 19th day post VE Day and the "spike" still hasn't hit. I get more and more hopeful that it won't hit as each day goes by.

I hadn't read the WHO article but that's really positive news.

Agree about the hugging etc/ I have always hated shaking hands especially after a father at parents' evening crushed my hand (teacher) 😀 Since then wear a bandage on my tight hand at parents' evenings and apologise cannot shake hands😀 so less physical contact with strangers might be a positive to come out of this...

understandmenow · 27/05/2020 07:02

@BeltaneBride I believe that CV is the death of the handshake!

tttigress · 27/05/2020 07:05

I think the media caused too much initial panic.

It looks like things are getting better, we should get outside and back to reality as quickly as possible (still taking some sensible measures)

understandmenow · 27/05/2020 07:07

@Livingmybestliferight we are due to go to Spain in September, fingers crossed for both of us!

Weston Super Mare hospital is closed as, when they finally got round to testing the staff, 40% were positive but asymptomatic.
Which explains how they suddenly have loads of COVID19 patients in the hospital, who were admitted for other things.

Despite the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth from the locals, there appears to be zero evidence that people have become ill enough to be hospitalised because of VE day Bank Holiday day trippers. The average rate of exposure to hospitalisation would mean every single one of them were ill10 days earlier than average if that was thd case. Which is so statistically unlikely, that I feel you can take the reports with a pinch of salt.
( Hospital has form for outbreaks of MRSA, C Difficile etc. so don't appear to be hot on infection control).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/05/2020 07:30

Someone posted on another thread that some scientists in Singapore believe that the UK will be virus free by the end of August.

BroomHandledMouser · 27/05/2020 07:34

I’m seeing the light too!! Ok things won’t be ‘normal’ anytime soon but the figures are looking better and better with each passing day.

IcedPurple · 27/05/2020 09:33

WHO is currently speculating that the virus may just burn itself out

Are they? Much as I'd love it to be true I've not read this. Perhaps individuals who work for the WHO may have said something along these lines, but I don't think it is official WHO advice.
