To be hopeful that the pandemic is easing?

Today stats

2405 confirmed cases (with more testing)

118 deaths

Two weeks ago (so a Sunday when figures are lower)

3534 cases

268 deaths

Things are improving? Even two weeks after an expected peak (due to VE Day).

We are getting there?

*yes

Ethelfleda · 26/05/2020 07:29

Wow, only on Mumsnet would someone think it appropriate to try and stop others from feeling optimistic about the pandemic easing.

grumpyorange I’m very sorry that you are still so anxious about all of this - but there are many, many other threads where you could express this - and be in good company.

understandmenow · 26/05/2020 07:33

The latest info I can see (3 days ago), says the r rate is unchanged @grumpyorange , where are you getting your info?

OP posts:
grumpyorange · 26/05/2020 07:45

@Ethelfleda then why would OP post in AIBU? The whole point is that it encourages debate. I'm not the only one who has said they don't feel the same way.

grumpyorange · 26/05/2020 07:46

@understandmenow considering if the rate goes above 1 we are in danger of being in total lockdown again I wouldn't constitute the fact that it's at 1 at the moment as a positive

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/05/2020 07:46

Grumpy orange really is grumpy.

I’m hopeful. So much we don’t know about this virus. If the rest of the world is seeing similar that’s cause for hope.

In Australia they are opening their very loose lockdown. Shops and pubs are open. Schools back. They can have 10 people round inside their houses. They haven’t really experienced CV at all. Less than 100 deaths and only 7,000 cases.

GalesThisMorning · 26/05/2020 07:47

Ahh I hope so. Even just to drive to exercise would be amazing! I could happily go another few years without setting foot in primark etc but a return to normal life and socialising would be wonderful. More than anything I'd love for my children to be able to see their friends again.

I'm also In North Wales where they say our numbers are rising. We are still in a much stricter lockdown than in England and everyone I know (sample size of 30!) is following the rules without any real complaint.

I wish Boris would make it clearer in his briefings that he's only speaking for England.

CountessFrog · 26/05/2020 07:53

Who said it’s at 1? Government briefing last night said 0.7

grumpyorange · 26/05/2020 07:54

Briefing said between 0.7 and 1

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2020 07:55

We won't go back into full lockdown even if it does go above 1. It's too late for that. No one will accept it and the country can't afford it.

GalesThisMorning · 26/05/2020 08:00

@Waxonwaxoff0 some of us still haven't left full lockdown! As for whether or not we ever return, who knows... I'd be wary of making such confident statements. You have no idea

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2020 08:07

@GalesThisMorning you're right, no one knows. I should have said I can't see it happening.

CountessFrog · 26/05/2020 08:07

But grumpy, you said it’s at 1

grumpyorange · 26/05/2020 08:08

And it is in my area

understandmenow · 26/05/2020 08:17

Where are you getting those stats @grumpyorange?

OP posts:
DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/05/2020 08:18

Come on grumpyorange. Try to see the chink of light. Grin

AlohaMolly · 26/05/2020 08:22

I’m also in North Wales and very supportive of the stricter lockdown. Most people I know have stuck to it rigidly, too. We spoke to a policeman last week who said he’d been told we are reaching our peak shortly.

I’m feeling quite aggrieved this week because my mother and brother live in England and they saw each other yesterday Sadi think it will be a while before I can do that!

megletthesecond · 26/05/2020 08:25

It's bound to ease because we've not been doing anything for two months.
If shops open and some schools go back without a large increase by mid July then I might start being optimistic (not very me TBH Wink).

Glowbuggy · 26/05/2020 08:28

Where I live most places have been open for a few weeks now. Schools returned back to normal, cafes/bars/restaurants can have up to 50 this weekend. No spikes as yet. It will get better 😀

understandmenow · 26/05/2020 08:31

That's great @Glowbuggy

LovingitlikeTHIS · 26/05/2020 08:35

Spain are welcoming tourists without needing to go into quarantine from July 1st.

Glowbuggy · 26/05/2020 08:36

It’s nice to have a bit of normality back. Everyone is being so respectful of each other, social distancing is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Children’s temps are taken before they go into class, and parents keep them at home if they have a sore throat or snotty. It’s a different way of living for sure. But it will be ok 😀

Glowbuggy · 26/05/2020 08:37

Borders are still closed though - probably for the rest of the year.

understandmenow · 26/05/2020 08:39

Totally agree @Glowbuggy things are going to be the "new normal", no hugging, no handshakes and we will just do that as "normal", we are getting there and I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

@LovingitlikeTHIS that's great for the summer tourism industry.

OP posts:
understandmenow · 26/05/2020 08:46

Hopefully you have nice places to holiday in your own country @Glowbuggy, so the closed border isn't too much of an issue?
