Death by M&S Ready Meals

BluSky5 · 13/05/2020 19:43

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

It's a pie. What did you expect?

Goingunderground2 · 13/05/2020 20:06

Better to be proper food than chemical filled rubbish.

BeetrootRocks · 13/05/2020 20:06

Agree pies go with mash

M and s ready mash is delicious, made with plenty of salt, butter and cream Grin

Thisismytimetoshine · 13/05/2020 20:07

Eating that is not going to make you ill Hmm.

It's not ideal to eat stuff like this as a major part of your diet, but you know this, right?
Surely you weren't planning on eating three each per day? 🤦‍♀️

youngestisapsycho · 13/05/2020 20:07

No.... chips, gravy and baked beans! Yum 😋

LittleBearPad · 13/05/2020 20:07

It’s the salt content though. I’m horrified. Do people eat like this 3 times a day?

Well no. You need all butter croissants for breakfast not a steak pie.

You do know you’re being a bit silly don’t you.

TheSpottedZebra · 13/05/2020 20:08

Boris could oink 3 pies a day, no problem.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 13/05/2020 20:08

Just split them so between 3 or 4 instead of 2, and add some extra veg or salad on the side. Then it's not too bad. I'm not sure anyone would pick a meat pie and lasagne as a healthy option though.

Cyllie33 · 13/05/2020 20:09

Why on earth would you think people eat that three times a day?! It’s a luxurious food item for a main meal (when presumably other meals that day would be much lighter, day porridge for breakfast and soup for lunch). The only think that’s shocked me is that you were going to eat three ready meals in one day - that’s mad OP! Shock

melj1213 · 13/05/2020 20:09

YABU- you chose them so must have seen their nutritional values. Most M&S ready meals are nor meant to be your entire food intake - especially if it's the gastro or luxury range or items which are naturally high in salt/fat/sugar etc. They're meant as a one off treat instead of a take away or whatever.

I am living alone atm (DD is staying at her dad's as she has asthma and her dad is WFH while I'm still going to work) and M&S is my closest food shop so I have been getting a few ready meals for dinners on nights when I work late

Normally I'd cook but with late finishes at work I cba cooking for one when I can whack a ready meal in the microwave and be done in 5 minutes. I never buy the luxury/gastro range as they are all really rich ingredients. I stick to their every day ranges - the traditional British dishes like cottage/shepherds pies etc; Italian pasta dishes and the count on us range and they are much better.

PinkDaffodil2 · 13/05/2020 20:09

That pie is really really good - but you’ve bought a bunch of gastropub style readymeals - why are you surprised they’re not healthy? They probably have less fat and salt than pub / restaurant versions of the same, and are a replacement for a treat meal out, not an everyday dinner.

Zaphodsotherhead · 13/05/2020 20:10

I think you are being a wee bit disingenuous, OP.

If you really want a content-shock, go and look at the 'traffic lights' on some vegan ready meals! I read the label on a vegan 'chicken' sandwich the other day and wondered if they made it out of solid oil...

Hollyhead · 13/05/2020 20:11

It’s only 1/2 your salt allowance, if you have a healthy breakfast and lunch it’s fine!

Lovelymonkeyninetynine · 13/05/2020 20:12

Fucking hell. I know it's virtue signalling and apparently healthy to be so 'shocked' at the nutritional value of these meals but I find it weird.
It's food, not poison. It won't make you ill. At the moment you probably need something easy and comforting and I'm sure you'll naturally want fresher and lighter foods next time you shop.
I hate the demonisation of certain foods, it's pretty disordered.

Veterinari · 13/05/2020 20:13

Imagine if you were to add in a side of chips or something else, that would be an entire days allowance of salt

So don't add chips... it's not hard

Do people eat like this 3 times a day?
Steak pie or fish pie for breakfast lunch and dinner? Not generally no - have you never met other people before @BluSky5
Honestly you sound a bit hard of thinking and food obsessed

Thisismytimetoshine · 13/05/2020 20:13

What do you normally eat, op?

I'm really intrigued at you ordering enough pies for the whole family to have one for all three meals per day, then being so shocked at the content that you think they should be outlawed...
If you were cooking from scratch, would you make lasagne for breakfast? Why do you think anyone else does this?

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2020 20:13

Buttery cheesy fish pie is high in saturated fat. Every day's a schoolday.

choppolata · 13/05/2020 20:14

You realise you don't have to eat the whole pie? Bet you will though!

ScarfLadysBag · 13/05/2020 20:14

I doubt a slightly salty pie is going to give you Coronavirus again. I think you'll be fine.

NaturalBornWoman · 13/05/2020 20:14

It’s the salt content though. I’m horrified. Do people eat like this 3 times a day?

Don’t be ridiculous, of course ‘people’ don’t usually even eat like that 3 times a week.

Wilmalovescake · 13/05/2020 20:14

Is this actually a thread about someone being surprised steak pie isn’t a healthy thing to eat three times a day??

Or am I getting it confused with the Pope still being catholic thread?

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2020 20:15

I should have looked at the steak pie first. Will I ever learn?

Cyllie33 · 13/05/2020 20:16

OP it might be worth taking a look at the NHS guidance on healthy eating - BBC Good Food also has good nutrition advice as well as recipes so you can eat a more balanced diet - three ready meals a day really isn’t good for you.

BluSky5 · 13/05/2020 20:16

To be fair, on the day that I put the order in, there really wasn’t much choice of food available to order and I had to get something. I was trying to get the calories in as myself and my elder teenager have lost so much weight with Coronavirus and I haven’t had the energy to be scrutinising the food labels.

don't worry you made bad choices but if you've been ill no harm.
most of their meals are ok just made some bad choices.
