Death by M&S Ready Meals

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

If you’re ill and not upto cooking this is better than eating rubbish. I’d add a loads of veg, so carrots green beans and make some mash (if you want) to go with it. It won’t make you ill again.

PatriciaHolm · 13/05/2020 19:59

Er, then don't add the chips? Can't see why you would need them anyway!

Look, if that's all you ate for weeks, fair enough. But it isn't, is it? Its a temporary fix for a few days. There is no reason not to eat them.

SharonasCorona · 13/05/2020 20:00

Why would it make you sick? Do you live off air usually? YABU, it’s temporary. I have no sympathy for people who waste food.

BluSky5 · 13/05/2020 20:00

Grumpiest, I agree. I think we need a bit of fat right now. It’s the salt content though. I’m horrified. Do people eat like this 3 times a day?

Jesus....that steak pie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen nutritional info as shocking as that.

Bakedbrie · 13/05/2020 20:00

M&S is shocking for this actually. But you probably will benefit from the calories right now...its not forever.

Ohtherewearethen · 13/05/2020 20:00

We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again.

M&S ready meals can give you another dose of covid? Who knew?

merryhouse · 13/05/2020 20:00

(and why would you add a side of chips to a PIE??)

ElderflowerPotion · 13/05/2020 20:01

Don’t be ridiculous. Then naivety at ready meals is astounding.

Yes, they are stupidly high in salt but all ready meals are (and they taste dreadful if they’re the low salt/ low fat variety). One high salt meal isn’t going to make you ill again. Just a bit bloated.

If you are that conscientious, check the traffic system before ordering it.

Pukkatea · 13/05/2020 20:01

I can't imagine many have m&s steak pies for breakfast, no.

KatherineJaneway · 13/05/2020 20:01

LOL, it's a steak pie. The idea is salt, meat, pastry and fat!

ComtesseDeSpair · 13/05/2020 20:02

They won’t make you ill again and as one-offs, they’ll be fine. Ready meals aren’t meant to be food you rely on for weeks on end, and a couple of days of slightly higher than usual salt and fat intake if you usually eat a diet low in both won’t have an impact.

But they were also odd choices to make if you were looking for particularly healthy food. A rich butter pastry pie filled with red meat; premium lasagne which is going to mean loads of cheese and creamy béchamel sauce. Is it really a surprise these things are fatty and salty?

DesmondTheMoonbear · 13/05/2020 20:02

Grumpiest, I agree. I think we need a bit of fat right now. It’s the salt content though. I’m horrified. Do people eat like this 3 times a day?

I thought that everyone had steak pie for breakfast?

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 13/05/2020 20:02

You know they do a healthy range that's mainly veg, steamed fish etc? You've chosen the fattiest, saltiest options whoever would've thought ready made lasagne and pie would be calorific..... Also don't have chips have veg or salad

HannaH021 · 13/05/2020 20:02

This cant be true!!!! I never saw numbers like that before!!!! I though it was regulated !!!

Dozer · 13/05/2020 20:02

It won’t make you sick.

ComtesseDeSpair · 13/05/2020 20:03

Basically, salt, sugar and fat are what make things taste really good. I’ve had the designated “healthy choice” M&S ready meals before and they were tasteless pap.

RomaineCalm · 13/05/2020 20:03

Do people eat like this 3 times a day?

Even on my slackest catering days I don't think I've ever managed to serve up three steak pies a day.

Dozer · 13/05/2020 20:03

“ I’m horrified. Do people eat like this 3 times a day?”

Yawn

Growingboys · 13/05/2020 20:03

Slightly weird supposition from you OP. I don't see why it's Boris' fault that you chose high fat ready meals?

And no, no-one eats stuff like that three times a day.

Comefromaway · 13/05/2020 20:04

You chose high salt/fat meals. M & S do a much healthier version of lasagne. Meat pie is never going to be healthy. You’d be surprised the amount of salt restaurants use (we’ve found out as Dh has to have a very low salt diet for medical reasons).

MadameMeursault · 13/05/2020 20:04

Calm down dear. Once in a while won’t hurt.

youngestisapsycho · 13/05/2020 20:05

Of course you have chips with steak pie..... smothered in thick gravy!

BeetrootRocks · 13/05/2020 20:05

No I don't think people eat a marks and Spencer all butter pastry steak pie for breakfast and lunch and dinner.

Agree with PP who said that restaurant food is nice because of what's in it...

There was a prog I caught a bit of a few months ago about how to cook like a chef in a restaurant and it was literally, add loads of salt then cover it/ soak it in butter Grin me and DH were pissing ourselves I mean obviously it would be delicious with all that fat and salt!

Pukkatea · 13/05/2020 20:05

No no no pie goes with MASH!!!
