Death by M&S Ready Meals

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

I have Addison's disease so salt that high is making my mouth water. (For anyone who doesn't know. We crave salt and we need more of it. So we can eat as much as we like!)

Hoggleludo · 16/05/2020 11:09

Also. Fat isn't the enemy.

However they once did an experiment with baked beans. Which as we know has lots of sugar in it

They lowered the sugar in one and 100% of people said they wouldn't eat it. They took out the sugar and same thing

It wasn't till it was where the sugar content is today that people said they'd eat it

So people. You don't want bad unhealthy food? Then don't buy it. That's how it goes. Brands will only sell what people will buy

I know this isn't doable. It's just joe it works.

LuaDipa · 16/05/2020 11:23

Not opposed to the odd ready meal, particularly at the minute, but your choices are surprising for someone so health-conscious.

I love a carb-fest as much as the next person but while we might have one of those in a week we would never have all three!!

Thisismytimetoshine · 16/05/2020 11:56

You have food issues, op. All this drama because you ate one third of a pie is quite concerning, really. You claim to "love food" but you lack any knowledge of basic nutrition.

LaurieMarlow · 16/05/2020 12:37

Inspired by this thread I went to M&S. Got the pie. Can’t wait for dinner Grin

doadeer · 16/05/2020 12:52

This is a bonkers thread 🤣

Obviously if you eat a pie every day it's not healthy but I don't think you need to fast for the rest of the week in penance!

herecomesgeralt · 16/05/2020 14:08

If a 700 calorie pie means you have to cut back for the week, how little are you normally eating?? That's insane!!

midnightstar66 · 16/05/2020 14:20

@LaurieMarlow please report back re an 'oil slick' as I'm suspecting that might be an exaggeration

Sickofbroccoli · 16/05/2020 14:27

@midnightstar66 I sit it on a bit of greaseproof when I make it as my oven tray is a bugger for sticking. There is a bit of “seepage” as DP calls it but oil slick is vastly overstating it Grin

The leftovers are also great cold the next day (it’s really rich so much as DP and I would like to consume the whole pie in one sitting it does defeat us!). Really want to try the chicken and leek one PP mentioned now.

Fenlandmountainrescue · 16/05/2020 14:31
Biscuit
midnightstar66 · 16/05/2020 14:34

@Sickofbroccoli I suspect M&S pie sales are going to go through the roof now - perhaps this was some clever marketing 😆 at least the seepage is just a little pil rather than filling as that's always upsetting. I now want to try both

GrumpiestOldWoman · 16/05/2020 14:41

I bought the fish pie earlier, been craving one since this thread started!

midnightstar66 · 16/05/2020 14:43

Frustrated that I now can't go to M&S til Monday because dc are at their dads and new puppy can't be left alone yet

LesLavandes · 16/05/2020 14:48

Off to check salt co tent and calories in my m&s gastro chicken and leek pie . I really hope you don't put me off my dinner

LesLavandes · 16/05/2020 14:50

Btw. Don't try the smoked salmon pate. Salt content ..... whooping high

BeetrootRocks · 16/05/2020 15:19

Good point.

OP you should also avoid m and s butter esp the butter that has salt in. In fact, from any shops. Ditto cheese. Jesus the fat content! Also custard, cream. And loads of fruit is obscenely high in sugar! It's a minefield. Literally. One wrong mouthful and BOOM dead.

Alsohuman · 16/05/2020 17:36

Oh that M&S butter with salt! It’s so, so good on crumpets and toast. It’s the only butter I buy now.

BeetrootRocks · 16/05/2020 18:05

I believe MANY makes of butter contain both fat and salt Angry

I believe Boris is taking steps to ban it. Good bless him!

Alsohuman · 16/05/2020 21:00

The M&S one with salt crystals is particularly delicious though.

Wilmalovescake · 16/05/2020 23:27

Oh fuck it, I haven’t been in a shop in 9 weeks but I’m going to m&s this week now.

derxa · 17/05/2020 09:17

oil slick Grin

LaurieMarlow · 17/05/2020 09:35

Checking in to confirm, as expected, reports of an ‘oil slick’ are greatly exaggerated.

Pie was fucking delicious though.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 17/05/2020 10:25

lauriemarlow Grin

I'm having M&S pie tonight, can't wait!

midnightstar66 · 17/05/2020 10:43

This thread deserves to be in classics. I joined thinking from the title it was lighthearted, and although the OP was actually serious it's still been an enormous laugh 😆

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/05/2020 12:31

I have called Greenpeace to come and wash the oil slick off poor OP's feathers Sad
