AIBU in thinking there is nothing less appealing than a fully grown man playing computer/console games?

There are so many threads on Mumsnet moaning about these manchildren and I just can't get the image of a slightly tubby, sweaty, hairy man sitting in the dark, surrounded by crisp packets, hunched over a screen swearing at whoever is on the other end....yuck, right?

OP posts:

Haven't read the full thread but totally agree with your op! 😄

Purpleartichoke · 13/05/2020 18:34

I guess I should tell my husband and child that family gaming sessions in our home arcade mean we are hairy, unattractive, slobs. I guess the laughter and fun we have together isn’t worth it.

lazylinguist · 13/05/2020 20:46

Imagine an adult woman playing with barbie dolls

Imagine being so dim that you think that's a good comparison. Adults play card games, board games, all kinds of games. They always have done. Most card games and many board games involve strategy and forward thinking, as do a lot of computer games.

Also imagine being so dim that you think someone's hobby determines what they look like. If you want to see some attractive gamers, try googling 'celebrities who are gamers'. Quite a lot of them are (attractive) women, in fact, plus plenty of wealthy, talented, attractive men. Apparently 52% of gamers are women these days.

Allergictoironing · 13/05/2020 21:16

Define what you mean by "gaming".

It can be anything from playing solitaire, Candy Crush, sports games, driving games, flight simulators, FIFA, various assorted "life" sims like second life or Farming Simulator, through combat games, all the way to the MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing) like World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls or Final Fantasy.

So, which of these are gaming and which aren't? Because as I've said earlier, there's an awful lot of people around who play games but are dismissive about "gamers".

Nobody's DH is a Trainspotter then...?

ByzantinePrincess · 13/05/2020 21:30

I doubt many people who play games would be interested in someone who was so ignorant that they’d automatically write off anyone who happened to enjoy one of the biggest entertainment mediums in the world, so no harm done really

Alicatz66 · 13/05/2020 21:32

I haven't read the whole thread .. but would agree with OP .. but I'm 53 ! .. doubt men my age are gamers !! .. I'd rather they went for a run or did the garden ! .... But I just don't get it ... my experience of gaming stretches to Uno or Guess Who

Henry Cavill is a gamer. Grin

I'm fat and hairy and I neglected a lot of jobs around the house today in favour of ... reading.

Does that mean that all people that love books are fat and hairy now?

Ugzbugz · 13/05/2020 21:57

Is it any worse than talking to random people on here?????

Pebbleinthesand · 13/05/2020 22:03

My husband is a slightly tubby gamer but doesn't possess any of the other qualities you associate with gaming. He only goes on his games late in the evening if I get a bath so it doesn't bother me.

I'll be honest I don't exactly get the urge to jump his bones whilst he's playing but never had any issue finding him attracting when he's off the computer.

He also plays Dungeons and Dragons and 3d prints and paints miniatures but as long as they don't come into the bedroom, we're cool.

CorianderLord · 13/05/2020 22:05

Idk makes me think of The Big Bang Theory and I find most of them oddly attractive

Lots of people refuting the 'sweaty, tubby' etc. stereotype.

But even if it's true, does it matter? Are men obliged to make themselves look sexy while doing their hobbies?

Imagine a man coming on here and saying, 'there's nothing less appealing than a chubby woman in joggers and a baggy T-shirt and a headband, getting all pink and sweaty on one of those exercise stepper things'?

Sonichu · 13/05/2020 22:47

"I'd rather they went for a run or did the garden ! ...."

What if they'd rather you did the dishes than spend time on MN?

OgoPogo8 · 13/05/2020 23:29

My grandparents, both in their 90s, are gamers.

Cant wait to tell them how chubby and hairy they are Grin

Lockheart · 13/05/2020 23:56

No, @PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock, Henry Cavill is a God Grin

maddening · 14/05/2020 00:02

To be fair when gaming they are not trying to have sex with you, so why would their concern be how sexy you found them? Why are we needing to worry about how much sex appeal we have all the time?

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 14/05/2020 07:20

I don't mind gaming, if it's something used to unwind or as a hobby. However! My ex plays World of Warcraft near enough 24/7. When I drop the kids off he's on it and when I pick then up, he's on it. I ask them is that all he does all day and they say yes. He says because the PC is in the living room (he has a flat) he's still looking after them.
So in that sense, it's a huge turn off as he doesn't do anything productive.

Nobody's DH is a Trainspotter then

I love going to see a good train Grin I don’t go as far as keeping notes of numbers etc but often pop down to the station if a special model is passing Grin

Vanhi · 14/05/2020 11:12

Nobody's DH is a Trainspotter then...?

Mine has quite a lot of geeky hobbies and interests but doesn't note down train engine numbers. We do both like going on heritage steam trains and one of our best ever dates was spent on a heritage railway seeing if we could stop off at every station en route - when I got home I made a spreadsheet to see if it would have been possible.

But we both have a geeky, logical mindset. Is it sexy? Who knows. It does make us very compatible as partners and that compatibility is a turn on.
