AIBU in thinking there is nothing less appealing than a fully grown man playing computer/console games?

There are so many threads on Mumsnet moaning about these manchildren and I just can't get the image of a slightly tubby, sweaty, hairy man sitting in the dark, surrounded by crisp packets, hunched over a screen swearing at whoever is on the other end....yuck, right?

OP posts:

When DS was tiny, he would only sleep on me. So I spent a fair bit of maternity leave playing Witcher 3.

When the tv show came out last year, I binged watched the series.

I’m now considering reading the books.

Is there really much difference between them all?

If anything, I would say the game is the most fulfilling, as you get to immerse yourself into a world, map out your own path, play with your own moralities - the books and show just forces you to ‘go along for the ride’.

gwenneh · 12/05/2020 15:46

Is there ever a thread on here that mentions computer gaming where the OP doesn't feel neglected due to it?

Probably not, since people who aren't gaming to the exclusion of all else don't feel the need to post about it.

DH doesn't game often was broken of the habit during his days in game development but I've enjoyed the design and storylines of some of the rare games he does play. Detroit: Become Human was fabulous to watch. We did that for a while instead of bingeing a miniseries.

He is giving me some gentle teasing about my "addiction" to the new Animal Crossing, but the Nintendo sends the time reports for each game played to his email so he has a good view of how much I'm playing...

OP, I saw a bit of advice on MN years ago which said ‘a selfish man can turn going to the toilet into a way to avoid his responsibilities’ and it really stuck with me. With these men (and cyclists, and men who spend all their time at work/ down the pub/ at the aquarium) the problem isn’t the hobby, the problem is always their attitude.

Or the attitude of a partner who an turn even going to the loo as a reason to find fault!

Why say 'these men?' why men in particular?
Plenty of women escaping to the garden center, or 'lunching' with their friends, or gym, or dance classes...

It isn't male or female attitudes at fault... just individuals, both male AND female.

Sonichu · 12/05/2020 16:29

"Plenty of women escaping to the garden center, or 'lunching' with their friends, or gym, or dance classes.."

Because MN deems these to be "worthy" ways of passing time. If a man came on here saying that there was nothing less attractive than a chocolate guzzling, cosy pyjama wearing, hair-scraped-into-a-bun-and-no-make-up wearing woman idly browsing MN all day, posters on here would be baying for blood.

ByzantinePrincess · 12/05/2020 16:35

Also I don’t think playing computer games occasionally means someone is necessarily a lazy twat - I just don’t find it an attractive personality trait personally

That is absolutely not a ‘personality trait’ 😂

BarbedBloom · 12/05/2020 16:37

My husband plays games and so do I. We both keep the house clean and tidy, we cook together or alternate. We set aside days where we tackle the garden or an odd household job out of the norm. I find him very sexy.

I think a lot of these men would be the same with any hobby, be it cycling, golf or tv. It is an excuse to opt out of housework or family life.

Baskininthegarden · 12/05/2020 16:39

I personally find it an unattractive interest and have avoided dating people who said they do it. .but then again, would probably feel the same for someone who was really into cricket, snooker,f1 or golf Grin

Sonichu · 12/05/2020 16:41

Why does a hobby have to be sexy/attractive anyway? Was I supposed to take up pole dancing and no one told me?

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/05/2020 16:42

I think if videogames are a social activity with known friends / family and the person does other stuff too then it’s okay.

TimeWastingButFun · 12/05/2020 16:44

It would annoy me if it happened relentlessly, but if it's just a bit of down time for him then that's absolutely fine, we all have hobbies!

Picklypickles · 12/05/2020 17:08

My gamer partner is so much sexier than all those exes who I'd have far preferred to be at home gaming than out shagging anything with a pulse behind my back, maybe I'm weird.

NaviSprite · 12/05/2020 17:10

Mine is solitary gaming, it’s my way to wind down - I’ll either play a bit of a game (plenty of non violent games out there too!), read a book or watch some TV. I don’t want to talk to other gamers at the same time because I’m actually happy to get ‘zoned’ in... that’s why I play when everybody else in my household is asleep! Not until the wee hours - I never get annoyed enough to shout at a game so no risk of waking anybody up. It’s my ‘me’ time Smile

How that could make me more or less attractive I don’t know - thankfully my DH doesn’t mind (and he doesn’t play video games Shock).

Enjoying video games isn’t that much different to enjoying a good movie but with more depth and storytelling as they’re usually several hours longer.

Now, I’m off to save Midgar from Shinra Grin

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 20:08

I just don’t find it an attractive personality trait personally

It's an activity, not personality trait.

It's like saying reading a book is a personality trait.
yow, if you said someone likes to read erotica, or horror, or sci-fi - it might give some insight into them (but only some), but game playing alone says nothing.

I can't see many psychiatrists asking 'do you play computer games?' - aha... GET OUT you weirdo!

Giffgaff99 · 12/05/2020 20:52

I agree with you OP - stuff the others ....why are mums netters so uptight.

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 20:56

I agree with you OP - stuff the others ....why are mums netters so uptight.

Because they think sweeping generalisations about gender, age, or hugely popular hobbies is the work of utter fucking morons.

Giffgaff99 · 12/05/2020 20:57

@vertical - lol.

Gallacia · 12/05/2020 20:59

My DH is a super fit biker type who works damn hard and enjoys gaming as part of his down time.

What would you rather be do?

I like it, it's harmless and it's his thing.

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 20:59

I did say that a bit tongue in cheek... for laughs, but it's probably accurate!

aSofaNearYou · 12/05/2020 21:02

why are mums netters so uptight.

Bit ironic given the people you agree with are the people saying it's childish to have a hobby that involves playing, as adults should just be doing admin and housework.

SistineScreamer · 12/05/2020 21:03

I love gaming. I don't know why it's seen as any less than another hobby? Because someone thinks it's immature? Oh please. Hmm

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 21:07

Getting drunk and dancing look woman on whack is immature too, but if lets you unwind, what's it matter?

My last woman was playing on Candy Crush over my shoulder in the middle of making love screaming 'yes, yes, another level baby!'...
Seemed to make things sexier than ever until her phone went flat.

slashlover · 12/05/2020 22:38

Some people are acting like gaming is a hobby for loners and weirdos.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-46746593

The video games sector now accounts for more than half of the UK's entire entertainment market, according to a new report.

The industry is worth £3.86bn ($4.85bn) - more than double its value in 2007 - said the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

That makes it more lucrative than video and music combined.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/05/2020 22:43
