Nothing less sexy...

AIBU in thinking there is nothing less appealing than a fully grown man playing computer/console games?

There are so many threads on Mumsnet moaning about these manchildren and I just can't get the image of a slightly tubby, sweaty, hairy man sitting in the dark, surrounded by crisp packets, hunched over a screen swearing at whoever is on the other end....yuck, right?

OP posts:
VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 12:28

And nonsensical, as it's perfectly possible to have healthy, outdoor activities and play games too. Although I don't have as impressive a list of activities as dh wink, I do manage to go hiking and MN and watch things on Netflix. Incredible!

I'll respond to all this bullshit later, after I've finished saving the earth, and finding the magic potion...

zingally · 12/05/2020 12:35

Let's be honest, aren't most of us "slightly tubby" at this point?

yelyah22 · 12/05/2020 12:36

My OH and I both game. We've also both got good jobs, exercise, eat well, and have plenty of quality time together.

I really despair of people who assume all people who play games are lazy shutins. 8 years olds game. 65 year olds game. There are tens of thousands of different types of games, and many of them involve social interaction, community, and support. And even if they didn't - how is playing on a computer for a couple of hours any different to sitting in front of Coronation Street scrolling through mumsnet?

Elsa8 · 12/05/2020 12:37

DH is a gamer. IMO like any hobby if it takes over your life it’s definitely not fine, but in moderation as a well adjusted adult who does lots of things with his family, has a social life, holds down a job, doesn’t stay up all night etc, there’s absolutely no harm in it. He plays games most evenings (while I’m sat being antisocial on my computer usually!), never when the kids are awake (except at weekends as a treat he and 4 year old DD spend an hour playing age appropriate two player games and they both enjoy it). He’s around in the evenings to do his share of kids bedtimes and household jobs, is always happy to watch an episode of something with me instead and never turns down the opportunity to get an early night with me! I honestly cannot get worked up about him spending a couple of hours in an evening slaying dragons or whatever!

aSofaNearYou · 12/05/2020 12:40

I didn't realise that adult men played computer games either. I thought it was a children/teenager only thing

You've been living somewhat in the dark then, given that it's the largest entertainment industry in the world and it's unlikely it got that way through children alone. Not to mention the huge amount of very famous video games that are not rated appropriate for children.

That's rather like saying you thought films were just for children because Minions exists.

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 12:51

For those that genuinely didn't appreciate that adults play games, you may have the perception that the 'games' might be like those that children play... cartoon characters jumping and walls and suchlike...

Modern day 'games' are more akin to movies, and they are not at all cartoon like. Footage of some games is hard to differentiate between a real movie.

Yes, a LOT of the popular genre's are warfare games with some aspects of violence (shooting), but there are also some period 'role play' type games where you act out the role of a character on an adventure and explore a literal 3D world in the way you might explore a book... it leads you along a story, but you interact with it - effective 'take part' in the story.

Other's might be driving simulations (Formula 1 driving for instance) where the graphics are so realistic, the gamer actually gets a very realistic experience... the same with a flight simulators?
How many of us would LOVE to sit in a flight simulator and have a go at flying a plane? Well... you can do that with modern games consoles.

It really isn't remotely like the bleep bleep bing bing noisy repetitive simple gaming that you see many grandchildren playing with pocket games. It is much more like attending a cinematic world where you interact with make believe or hyper-realism (incredibly realistic scenery or worlds)

I'm not illiterate but my autocorrect wants to make me look like I am!

Oh, Please do! We're all hanging out for it. You'll get a Nobel Prize and an OBE and all sorts!

For jogging my lardy arse from the console, to via the fridge, to the mumsnet forum where the virtuous reside!

(I don't game btw, but that's not the point!)

SimonJT · 12/05/2020 12:54

It isn’t anyones job or responsibility to be sexy, people are not things that exist for shallow people to find sexy.

Also shocked by the fat shaming from OP, and also putting people down for having body hair. Lets hope OP is super slim and hairless.

I have a friend who plays video games for a living, he has a six figure salary. He also plays rugby and volunteers at his local youth club. How lazy and immature.

Sparklesocks · 12/05/2020 12:55

Maybe don’t worry so much about what other people do or don’t find attractive?
The world is easier when you keep your beak out and mind your own...

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 12:57

Why can't mumsnet mums be as good looking as the ones on console games... if they were, men might not be on their consoles all the time!

(see, if I had written that in earnest, God only knows what world war I'd start).

Good job I was only joking... and I have 200 virtual mumsnet lives left.

I love how all gamers are suddenly wonderful partners and parent, working for at least 6 figure salary whilst dedicating hours to keep themselves fit and educating themselves Grin

Probably the only ones to have decent hair cut at the moment too!

Ninkanink · 12/05/2020 13:01

Yes I disagree with the slightly tubby and hairy description too...nothing wrong with being slightly tubby or hairy, although I recognise the picture the OP was painting and that stereotype does exist for a reason - It’s a certain set of behaviours that’s unappealing (and I used the term ‘sexy’ in an earlier comment because I’d somehow got the idea that the OP said that, when in fact she had said unappealing). But imagining that all men who game are like that is just ridiculous, which is what I took issue with; as I’ve already said, the two paragraphs conflated two very different things.

Demelzatree3 · 12/05/2020 13:04

Jheez. I find the "get up and go" active types so unattractive. I remember an ex waking me up early one morning "we could do this today, or this or this!?" and I remember my reply was something along the lines of "Wtf are you doing waking me up you crazy dickhead!?" we didn't last long. I'm not a morning person and I don't wake up with a zest for life. He just annoyed me constantly looking for something to do and not content to ever just chill out during the day. Urgh.

MarieQueenofScots · 12/05/2020 13:05

I clearly said he was my ex. But yeah the rest of the above is true. He doesn’t need to work full time any more (to be fair neither do although my work is another devil of the modern age 😉) His hobby became his work. Something very sexy about enjoyed success Smile

Allergictoironing · 12/05/2020 13:05

I know people with the same attitude to gaming as the OP and many posters on here, yet don't see the irony of posting their latest "Angry Birds" or "Candy Crush" achievements on Facebook, or playing Solitaire or Maj Jong on their PCs. So when does a game change from being a pastime to being something contemptible and childish?

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 13:06

The point is... whether someone plays games or not, doesn't determine their mindset, their laziness, their fitness... there's no real correlation to anything. To deem it unsexy seems is akin to deeming a woman who likes jazz to be unsexy vs one who likes rock.

Which really begs the question of the mindset of a person that determines sexiness by a single attribute or hobby...

If he's handsome, intelligent, loving, talented, saves children in Africa, but he plays games... I don't know how he can live with it. I really don't!

Mysterian · 12/05/2020 13:06

Is this less sexy?

Demelzatree3 · 12/05/2020 13:07

I also don't think there's anything wrong with not educating yourself in your free time. There's nowt wrong with just enjoying life at leisure, not everyone enjoys learning.

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 13:09

She did say 'unappealing' in the op... but the thread title says sexy... make of that what you will

VerticalHorizon · 12/05/2020 13:10

Is that artwork from Hairy Potter?
