Nothing less sexy...

AIBU in thinking there is nothing less appealing than a fully grown man playing computer/console games?

There are so many threads on Mumsnet moaning about these manchildren and I just can't get the image of a slightly tubby, sweaty, hairy man sitting in the dark, surrounded by crisp packets, hunched over a screen swearing at whoever is on the other end....yuck, right?

What a lovely stereotype 🤨

YANBU to find somethimg a particular turn off.

YABVU to have such small minded, stereotypical views.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/05/2020 08:00

Doesn't bother me.

My DP works hard, goes to the gym, helps around the house... if he wants to chill and play a game then good for him. Better than staring slack-jawed at the television watch soap after soap like MiL.

araiwa · 12/05/2020 08:01

Do you have any other outdated opinions you wish to share too?

Ohtherewearethen · 12/05/2020 08:01

Whilst I don't find it attractive, I think there are plenty of things less sexy than that. Michael Gove being one of them.

Lockheart · 12/05/2020 08:01

I think you're being judgemental and a bit dim if you think all gamers are chubby / sweaty / hairy people sitting in the dark.

I play games and I'm none of those things. I also belong to several museum and art associations (gaming =/= uncultured) and hold down a professional job.

Coronaaapetite · 12/05/2020 08:02

Is there ever a thread on here that mentions computer gaming where the OP doesn't feel neglected due to it? I know it can be very addictive, just seems a huge drain on time to me...especially when you have children or work.

I don’t find my not-tubby-or-sweaty-but-admittedly-hairy DH any less attractive when he’s gaming. He doesn’t spend all his time doing it, does his fair share of housework and parenting, and is capable of making interesting conversation. YABU to generalise in that way, but fair enough if you don’t like gaming. I find golf equally repugnant, for instance.

Coronaaapetite · 12/05/2020 08:03

@Ohtherewearethen Agreed. You won less sexy top trumps with Gove.

Youcanstay · 12/05/2020 08:03

Well OP, I agree with you!!

Ninkanink · 12/05/2020 08:04

My DH is well built and sexy, handsome, a highly paid professional with a first class honours degree; he is caring, thoughtful, hardworking and always looking to do his best by me, my daughters and his family.

He plays video games to chill out, because his job is very mentally demanding. He keeps it in check, is balanced about it and never physically or emotionally ignores me.

Those men are man children because they’re selfish, entitled and lazy. They’d be that way with or without gaming.

notacooldad · 12/05/2020 08:04

There is something ridiculous about an adult using the word ' yuck' ..right?

PileofToss · 12/05/2020 08:04

I agree with you, OP. Glad my DH isn’t a gamer

Mrsemcgregor · 12/05/2020 08:06

I spent a good 8 hours over the weekend playing a computer game. I am not sweaty, or hairy (other than my very nice thick long hair) I am not tubby and was at no point surrounded by crisps. The room was bright and breezy not dark and dinghy. I am a grown woman of 38.

It was a wonderful way to explore a beautiful virtual world and use cognitive skills. Much better than watching shit tv or scrolling endlessly through Facebook or dare I even say Mumsnet.

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/05/2020 08:07

Well sure if that’s your stereotype? I’m not into gaming but I’m not sure why it’s a so much lower as a form of entertainment than scrolling through a message board?

My DH loves gaming, it’s the medium through which he chats to his friends most. It relaxes him and is the escapism he enjoys - I prefer reading a book but we’re different people. He also holds down a well paid, responsible job, does more than his fair share of housework, brings me a coffee in bed every morning, is an equal and involved partner. He’s not overweight, hairy or sweaty (though nice body shaming) and our living room tends to be pretty light. Your judgment is much more unattractive.

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/05/2020 08:08

I think it’s because when the posters describe their gaming OPs it’s always in the same sentence as feckless and lazy.

MashedSpud · 12/05/2020 08:08

I’d rather my DH be a gamer than a social media zombie.

HandfulOfFlowers · 12/05/2020 08:09

Well my husband plays computer games sometimes, often with our children, it never impacts other activities, he isn't fat and doesn't leave a mess. I didn't think that made for a very interesting MN thread! Of course the threads on here are from people who have a problem with it, not those of us who don't.

araiwa · 12/05/2020 08:09

Playing games is the same as anything. Only is an issue if it takes over other responsibilities in life.

Lockheart · 12/05/2020 08:09

Selfish and lazy people are selfish and lazy regardless of their hobbies. If it wasn't gaming it would be something else.

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/05/2020 08:10

@HandfulOfFlowers - agreed, no need to make threads about things that aren’t a problem.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 12/05/2020 08:10

Bad breath. That's worse.
Fungal toenail infections are also worse.
I guess it depends on the game though. Some are a bit off putting, but I have no issue with DH spending time playing Space Engineers or Skyrim. Sometimes we even play together! Gosh.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 12/05/2020 08:11

I don't see how it is anymore of a time drain than mumsnet tbh. I play sometimes, so does dp. I haven't ever heard him screaming swear words at people and we have a tiny house, if he was doing it, it would hear it!

Scruffyoak · 12/05/2020 08:11

Mine plays playstation. I don't mind as it's the time of day I either work or read and I like my own time too. Neither of us watch much tv.

ElectricTonight · 12/05/2020 08:15

YANBU!

WindsorBlues · 12/05/2020 08:15

I love cosy evenings lying on the sofa reading my book while DH sits beside me playing his PS4.
