to not see any redeeming characteristics in Donald Trump?

I have just finished a book "Very Stable Genius" by two reporters from the Washington Post, who have been covering Donald Trump's presidency. The picture that emerges from that book (and other things I have read) is of man of no redeeming characteristics. He is bad tempered, narcissistic, revels in his ignorance, is petty, and a bully to boot.

People who work with him (even those who share a conservative world view) seem to not be able to stand him because of his character as a human being.

AIBU to not see any redeeming characteristics in him? Are there any?

Frankly, I question his sanity.

Frankly, I question his sanity

And the sanity of American people

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 08/05/2020 13:15

I'm with jesus - his redeeming feature is that he's old and massively unhealthy.

Pelleas · 08/05/2020 13:16

Namechangervaver I've never been able to get my head round the workings of the presidential election, so I don't know how many Americans actually voted for him!

1066vegan · 08/05/2020 13:19

YNBU Absolutely no redeeming qualities.

He has a gift for self-promotion, appealing to the lowest common denominator and understanding his base but I don't think that's a good thing.

Pinkblueberry · 08/05/2020 13:20

I think we’re lucky that it’s the 21st century and that America is a 1st world country - god knows what this man would get up to if he was elected 50 or 100 years ago in a more vulnerable country. He’s mad enough to probably be on par with some of the worlds worst dictators if he truly had the power to do it.

B1rdbra1n · 08/05/2020 13:20

Trump has no redeeming features, this has always been axiomatic to me, I'm surprised that you are surprised
He has taken the primitive modus operandi of a Mafia boss and put it on the world stage for everyone to see the risible but awfull details

1066vegan · 08/05/2020 13:20

@Pelleas I don't know the numbers without looking them up but Hilary Clinton won the popular vote.

ArgyllFTM · 08/05/2020 13:21

It’s something I find really bizarre about him. Most awful people have some positive feature - they love their kids, they paint, they adopt cats, they’re passionate about music, something - but he genuinely seems to have no redeeming qualities at all.

B1rdbra1n · 08/05/2020 13:22

America is a 1st world country
First world and falling...
Fallen?

FabulouslyFab · 08/05/2020 13:24

What’s even scarier is all the people in power that are supporting him for their own ends. They must know he’s crazy?

FenellaMaxwell · 08/05/2020 13:25

It makes us look slightly less stupid for Brexit and Boris?

Hwyrynos · 08/05/2020 13:26

Yanbu. I can’t think of a single thing either.
Except that maybe he can be a lesson to the world to never elect anyone like him again??

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 13:26

I think he has many. He's driven. He's confident. He wants the best for his country and won't accept anything less. He speaks his mind and doesn't beat around the bush- something I wish more politicians would do. I also think his handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been absolutely outstanding.

AprilJune · 08/05/2020 13:29

He’s a repulsive man. Thick as shit (I’d love to see him do an iq test) with no redeeming features.

PhilSwagielka · 08/05/2020 13:30

Yes, we're well aware he speaks his mind. He has no brain to mouth filter.

I don't get women who cape for Trump. We're nothing but pieces of meat to men like him.

megletthesecond · 08/05/2020 13:33

He doesn't have any. He's not smart, he's a bully, ignorant, spiteful......

Even Putin seems bright. He's just using it in the wrong way. Johnson isn't all bad either.

TheHighestSardine · 08/05/2020 13:38

What timeline are you posting from Pinkyyy?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 08/05/2020 13:38

63 million Americans voted for Trump.
Out of a population of approx 330 million. Some of those are ineligible to vote of course but, it’s equivalent to about 1 in 4 that voted for him. With numbers like that, I think we should pity the majority rather than question their sanity.

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 13:40

I don't understand your question @TheHighestSardine

iklboo · 08/05/2020 13:41

He speaks his mind

Which isn't very bright.

midwestsummer · 08/05/2020 13:41

I also think his handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been absolutely outstanding.

In what way?
There have been several decent responses to C19 here in the USA both Republicans and Democrat.
Trump's response hasn't been well thought of by either side for the most part.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 08/05/2020 13:42

I was also going to give this a genuine go btw and say, based on all the pictures I have seen of him with dogs, that he’s a dog lover. Then I googled it and discovered he’s the first President in 100 years to not have a dog, so not even that 🤷‍♀️

DadOnIce · 08/05/2020 13:42

George W Bush was probably the worst president before the Trump came along, and he demonstrated moments of empathy and caring about people. Since leaving the job, I've seen him use self-deprecating humour in interviews. I cannot imagine the Trump ever doing this. He has never made a friendly quip, a jocular aside, a corny-but-likeable joke.

This sums it up absolutely perfectly.
