to not see any redeeming characteristics in Donald Trump?

I have just finished a book "Very Stable Genius" by two reporters from the Washington Post, who have been covering Donald Trump's presidency. The picture that emerges from that book (and other things I have read) is of man of no redeeming characteristics. He is bad tempered, narcissistic, revels in his ignorance, is petty, and a bully to boot.

People who work with him (even those who share a conservative world view) seem to not be able to stand him because of his character as a human being.

AIBU to not see any redeeming characteristics in him? Are there any?

Oh and illiterate.

Lordfrontpaw · 08/05/2020 22:59

Who, Trump?

Crowbarred · 08/05/2020 23:01

Well, by the evidence of this thread, @Pinkyyy, yes. I hope that you think rather more about policies when you vote. If you vote.

KenDodd · 08/05/2020 23:01

Ooh God! A positive of Trump? There must be some (there really must) I don't believe anyone has no positive points about them. You can't even say he loves his dog. I'm struggling, I might have to come back to it.

KenDodd · 08/05/2020 23:04

He provides employment for people in his resorts?
He gives people free hats at his rallies? So he's a very generous hat giver awayer?

user1471565182 · 08/05/2020 23:04

Im a bit sick of pussyfooting around this, people seem to now think their opinion is equal to anybody elses, just by virtue of holding one. Its nonsense.

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 23:05

@Crowbarred what evidence is that then? I don't know who you think you are to belittle people and call them unintelligent and illiterate just because their views on politics are different to yours.

Yes I did vote thank you. Clearly you're surprised that a gypsy has the intelligence to use their vote because we're all so thick.

SeaEagleFeather · 08/05/2020 23:07

He has accomplished some unbelievable things during his time as president,

well yes, if nothing else he's really impressively made the US a laughing stock. Their pull on the world stage has plummetted after the various trade-deals he's destroyed and gaffes he's pulled.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but some opinions are worth more than others depending on how incisive they are and how well they seem grounded in recorded factual events. If they're just based on idealism or even worse, what someone wants to be true, then they're worthless.

Crowbarred · 08/05/2020 23:08

How on earth am I supposed to have deduced your ethnicity from this thread? All that is plain is that you don’t have any knowledge of Trump’s politics.

user1471565182 · 08/05/2020 23:09

So do you like people speaking their mind and not beating around the bush or not?

Or did you mean 'like it when people attack minorities other than me'

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 23:11

Because it's on this thread and you've made a judge of how intelligent o am based on what you've read on this thread.

I won't be engaging ant further because it's just plain offensive and it's always the same. Just because I didn't go to school and get a degree, doesn't mean I'm a worthless member of society. There are millions of trump supporters, so I'm clearly not alone in my views.

KenDodd · 08/05/2020 23:12

I've got one!
Nobody feels inferior around him.
I mean that in all seriousness. If I met Obama (for example) I would feel inferior and intimidated, I would know that he was cleverer than me, more knowledgeable than me, probably more caring about the world than me. Trump doesn't make people feel like that I don't think. He's not going to use words you might not understand or talk about places or people or concepts you've never heard of.

B1rdbra1n · 08/05/2020 23:13

Generally his 'base' are those from patriarchal/honour culture areas, trained from birth in unquestioning deference to the highest ranking male, I feel that explains some of his support.
Maybe the 'cult of trump' explanation holds more waterConfused
(I know, clutching at straws a bitBlush )

SeaEagleFeather · 08/05/2020 23:15

Just because I didn't go to school and get a degree, doesn't mean I'm a worthless member of society

of course not. Your opinion and your worth as a human being are different things. I might think that you need to look into analytical reasoning and observation more, but that's got nothing to do with how valuable -you- are.

You're entitled to your view, just as I'm entitled to disagree and think that a deeper inspection of Trump's tax record, his dealings with banks and with big business and his interesting relationship with the truth show that he's very far from the person that you believe he is.

B1rdbra1n · 08/05/2020 23:15

Nobody feels inferior around him
true, but (imo) that's a bit like saying no one feels intellectually intimidated by a large male chimp....
he will still have his allies tear you to pieces if you cross him in anyway

HopeClearwater · 08/05/2020 23:15

Generally his 'base' are those from patriarchal/honour culture areas, trained from birth in unquestioning deference to the highest ranking male

Good point and that would explain the support from one of the posters on this thread.

user1471565182 · 08/05/2020 23:16

im from a traveller family myself btw and its entirely unimportant.

Deadringer · 08/05/2020 23:17

Anyone who can still think well of Trump at this point is either mad or stupid, whether they have a degree or not is irrelevant.

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 23:17

I can't actually believe what I'm reading now. @HopeClearwater did you seriously just make that assumption about me?

Perhaps some of you people with all this formal education, need to get some social education.

Crowbarred · 08/05/2020 23:21

No one has suggested you’re ‘worthless’, @Pinkyyy. They’ve pointed out that you’ve made some remarkably uninformed comments about Trump. Surely you can see the difference?

You seem to struggle with understanding what people are saying on this thread.

KenDodd · 08/05/2020 23:22

Three women have married him, they must have seen something good in him. I refuse to believe that anyone can have no redeeming features at all. Plus, I think he's going to be re elected.

MaxNormal · 08/05/2020 23:25

KenDodd fame and money is what they saw.

Thurmanmurman · 08/05/2020 23:26

@DadOnIce that absolutely sums it up perfectly

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 23:26

Who says they're uninformed? I've just started my opinions, I haven't given any of the facts behind them. I'm not struggling to understand what people are saying. I'm just shocked and appalled at the things people think it's okay to assume about someone purely based on their education and ethnic group.

If people are so closed minded that they think that their opinion on trump is the only one that is right, then they are the ones who are uninformed.

OgoPogo8 · 08/05/2020 23:30

He's quite an effective con man.

He's not restrained by ethics and concerns about legality.

I think that's a positive as I can go.
