AIBU or is eBay seller?

I bought wallpaper on eBay from a wallpaper account. It arrived looked very slightly different colour wise but not a million miles away and thought it would be fine. It’s metallic and still in th wrapper. The label says Silver which is what I ordered.
I was out working all day today and left a key for my decorator to come and put it up for me.
I get home from work and it’s champagne coloured. Looks totally out of place with my room and all the bits I’ve bought to go with the paper.
Seller says it’s the right one sent. She wants me to strip it off and send it back to see if she will do a return. Surely this is unreasonable? I’ve sent pictures. I am still working and homeschooling two high school children, one starting highers so it a challenge on its own and I am studying competent my course at home and working. That’s why I got someone to come today as I don’t have time. Kids were at their dads my partner and I were at work.
I’ve put three photos up. I ordered the white one. I think she has sent me incorrectly packaged gold rolls with the silver label. The other photo is my wall.
I think the seller is BU expecting me to strip it off and return. I still have one unopened.

You are taking the piss. You should have known that (a) monitors can't easily display true colours and (b) the light in every room is different, which changes colours. You didn't bother to check the paper at all before having someone else hang it. Someone else who should not have even been in your home because, in case you haven't noticed, there's a lockdown - wallpapering isn't remotely essential, and your decorator could have tracked the virus right though your house. Then you proceed to complain after you have ruined the article for resale.

I think the seller is entirely reasonable - strip of off the wallpaper and send it back. Not that that may get you a refund, but I bet the seller will get a laugh.

BTW, your decorator sucks, that is a terrible job of wallpapering!

heartsonacake · 04/05/2020 07:00

YABU. It’s too late now, you’ve put it on your walls.

The seller is right that if you want a refund you need to stick to the eBay T&Cs you agreed to when you signed up and send the product back.

But really, the onus is on you to double check before you use a product that it’s the correct one, especially when you have doubts before you even use it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/05/2020 07:08

Votes are not wrong. YABU for not checking before you paid for the paper to be pasted on your wall in the middle of a pandemic.

DrManhattan · 04/05/2020 07:09

Feel bad for the seller. They are gonna lose out. Not sure why anyone would decorate a whole room without checking properly before starting.

mummabubs · 04/05/2020 07:09

I just came on to point out what I now see others have too- the pattern between pics 1 & 2 is different, the swirl doesn't "complete" on the gold one. This proves that of the two you've been sent pattern number 1, so you might have recourse to get a refund. The seller would have to pay your return shipping fee under eBay rules but they're not being unreasonable to request it's returned. (although I don't see how you'd strip it and be able to send it back in a resalable condition for them). You can go directly to eBay to request a refund after a certain period of time. I do think it's unfortunate that you paid someone to put it up before properly checking the paper yourself - you'd have seen the difference in pattern and known it wasn't right.

Runbitchrun · 04/05/2020 07:12

It’s on your wall, of course you can’t have a refund.

mummabubs · 04/05/2020 07:15

Although to add on OP I can't tell as the second pic doesn't look like an ebay listing pic, was pattern 2 definitely advertised under the listing on eBay or did you order pattern 1 on ebay by mistake thinking you were getting the other design? That makes all the difference here! (and I have to say regardless of the wallpaper pattern debate, inviting someone into your home to put up wallpaper was in no way essential works whatsoever. The government have even stated as part of their website guidance that decorating does not constitute essential work. But I'm sure you knew this and went with it anyway).

Flipswhitefudge · 04/05/2020 07:15

Yes, you have definitely been sent the gold, the pattern on the grey/silver is different.

KatherineJaneway · 04/05/2020 07:24

He did a piss poor job of hanging your wallpaper. I'd be more angry about that.

HaveAtEm · 04/05/2020 07:29

It actually looks like you have two DIFFERENT types of paper there OP. Look at the patterns carefully...in the centre of the lines square/line things where the lines eventually meet, on the left strip, the lines meet totally, like the 'Athena Gold' pattern, and on the right strip, they don't, like on the Kitty Grey/silver pattern. I've marked it here:

HaveAtEm · 04/05/2020 07:30

I'm very surprised that a decorator didn't notice that 😱

Ohohohwhereyougoing · 04/05/2020 07:36

Haveatem 😮 oh man! That's a big fuck up.

OP, this sounds like a shit show but YABU for not checking. I've been stung recently for letting a fitter fit something i hadn't noticed was damaged. Was v annoyed he hadn't pointed it out either but it was now fitted.

On another note, is that wallpaper not giving you a headache?

TheSerenDipitY · 04/05/2020 07:37

i think i would be annoyed at the bad job the wall paper hanger did

PenisBeakerDipper · 04/05/2020 07:40

I’m confused because the first screenshot says gold and grey in the title.

Gold or silver that paper is ugly as sin...I would cut your losses and get it stripped and repaint. I don’t think you’re getting your money back.

RandomSelection · 04/05/2020 07:42

@HaveAtEm

That's just the way the light is shining on it... Because of the flash, the left part that you have circled looks lighter. It looks grey in the left, white on the right but would actually be the same colour in the same light. If that makes sense?

Beautiful3 · 04/05/2020 07:45

Your picture on the left looks like the middle picture, silver. Is that the one you wanted? To be fair when you open up any wall paper you have to look at it before using.

Toly · 04/05/2020 07:46

You would have had a case before the wallpaper was on your wall, it’s not the seller’s fault you didn’t check it first and they can’t resell it so you are definitely BU

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 04/05/2020 07:47

YABU.

You ordered gold, you got gold.

It was your mistake unfortunately. I hope it didn't cost too much!

crispysausagerolls · 04/05/2020 07:48

ALL THE PHOTOS LOOK IDENTICAL TO ME 🤪

bumbleymummy · 04/05/2020 07:54

You ordered Athena gold metallic grey. There is gold in it. That’s the colour you think looks champagne. The first and third pictures look the same. You’ve ordered the wrong paper YABU.

squiglet111 · 04/05/2020 07:58

I think the wall paper is the same as in the listing. I think your lighting is making the paper look a different colour. Maybe see what it looks like in natural lighting?

I think all three pics are the same. Pic 2 is a zoomed out pic. The first pic is very up close

Peapod29 · 04/05/2020 08:02

You can’t have a refund if you’ve already put it on the wall! How silly. She’d basically just be giving you a free product for no fault of hers. You saw it in the flesh before putting it up.

Blacksideupanddownagain · 04/05/2020 08:04

@HaveAtEm is right! If your post is genuine I think it's unlikely to be real Athena brand paper, or it's seconds? Was it a lot cheaper than other versions of the same brand paper?! I think you are crackers not to have checked before putting up (and not essential work in lockdown either to have a decorator in your house Hmm), but there is definitely something not right about the paper

tooto · 04/05/2020 08:04

You put it on your wall! Should have checked beforehand and returned in the wrapper if you wanted a refund. Also agree that it says gold in the description!

squiglet111 · 04/05/2020 08:06

@haveatem
The pattern is the same in the third pic. It's the light that is making it look like the pattern changed.
It's a bit of an optical illusion.

I don't think it's fair on the seller to expect a refund tbh. Op you picked the paper, you don't like it in your light and now want a refund. Not sellers fault as it clearly says gold in listing.
