I bought wallpaper on eBay from a wallpaper account. It arrived looked very slightly different colour wise but not a million miles away and thought it would be fine. It’s metallic and still in th wrapper. The label says Silver which is what I ordered.
I was out working all day today and left a key for my decorator to come and put it up for me.
I get home from work and it’s champagne coloured. Looks totally out of place with my room and all the bits I’ve bought to go with the paper.
Seller says it’s the right one sent. She wants me to strip it off and send it back to see if she will do a return. Surely this is unreasonable? I’ve sent pictures. I am still working and homeschooling two high school children, one starting highers so it a challenge on its own and I am studying competent my course at home and working. That’s why I got someone to come today as I don’t have time. Kids were at their dads my partner and I were at work.
I’ve put three photos up. I ordered the white one. I think she has sent me incorrectly packaged gold rolls with the silver label. The other photo is my wall.
I think the seller is BU expecting me to strip it off and return. I still have one unopened.

Surely if upu don't like it you will be stripping it back off anyway?

Or are you planning to keep it up?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 04/05/2020 02:44

So you ordered the one in the middle, you thought - but when it arrived it was the one on the left (which is, as has been said, a different pattern, never mind different colour!)

The fact that it is not even the same pattern means that you were mis-sold a product - she has sent the wrong one. Yes, you should have checked more carefully before you put it up - and you definitely should have sorted it before paying someone else to hang it for you - but whether or not you're going to be able to do anything about it via ebay now is a bit of an issue. It is standard to return the item to get a refund.
Thing is though, that even if she does replace it, you're STILL out of pocket to the cost of the decorator, so can you not just learn to live with it?

SnipSnapPop · 04/05/2020 02:51

By any chance could the lighting in the room have skewed the colour? Especially if it metallic

LostDesire · 04/05/2020 02:52

@Blueskysunsout if you really don't like it, just rip it down and send it back. If the seller wants their crap paper back, give it em.

Yes I do think the seller is being silly but, if it was me I would do whatever they wanted to get a refund. Thing is this, the seller does not really care about having it back, they will bin it. However it's to make sure you ain't just trying to have your pie and eat it. You know get the paper for free.

On another note, your decorator is totally shit. I would be ripping it down anyway. Can't stand badly done wallpaper. Hope you laughed in his face if he told you it looks bubbly and shit, just because it's drying. Get your money back from him too.

Hodge00079 · 04/05/2020 02:52

Hindsight is a brilliant thing. I think if it looked a different colour you should have held a piece up to see what it looked like.

Can you start by returning the unused roll? They can then investigate. Whether they will do anything anything regarding the used rolls is another matter.

Purpleartichoke · 04/05/2020 03:03

Pale metallic colors aren’t going to show accurately onscreen and one person’s gold
Is another’s champagne. Op, this one is your problem. I don’t think you should be asking for a refund.

AMCoffeePMWine · 04/05/2020 03:12

They all look the same, bar monitors making it look slightly different. And gold is part of the description.

If you’ve used it, you can’t change your mind at this point. Sorry. However, it’s really nice, try and live with it and I think you’ll be able to make it work.

eaglejulesk · 04/05/2020 03:48

I think you should have checked it before getting it put on the wall - it's too late now. Buying something like wallpaper on ebay is always going to be risky.

JKScot4 · 04/05/2020 03:52

Eh? You didn’t unroll it and hold it up just to check how it looked? Most paper is in clear plastic, I’m lost that you never looked at it before hanging it Hmm
Send the unused one back and put this down to you being daft.

JKScot4 · 04/05/2020 03:54

Off topic, why are you home schooling high school kids? I’m in Scotland too and the schools are doing a great job and keeping them on track.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 04/05/2020 04:05

Omg, you also had a decorator in your home, surely that’s non essential! Is the cleaning down of the wallpaper of germs what made it such a piss poor job?

Easilyanxious · 04/05/2020 04:10

Unfortunately as you used it you can't return it
Like it you brought shoes wore them
Then realised they were the wrong ones you couldn't return

LifeIsAPotato · 04/05/2020 04:20

That's an awful papering job, wouldn't be a bad idea to rip it off and start again!

notsodimwit · 04/05/2020 04:52

OP

No1 listed as 'gold'
No 2 listed as 'silver'
No3 look like No 1
The ebay listing is correct! Why didn't you fully open a roll to hold up to the light and put against your soft furniture to compare the colour?Confused

GoBrookeYourself · 04/05/2020 05:00

YABU. As PP have pointed out, colours often look a bit different on screens anyway, but actually it looks the same on the picture on your wall as on the listing. Also, the wallpaper has been put on awfully! Not a good job at all.

So are you wanting to keep the wallpaper? Because surely if you are, it’s cheeky to expect a refund; if you’re not, you’ll be stripping it off anyway to put a different one on presumably, so even if the seller won’t be able to reuse it, you can still send it back. So either way YABU.

1066vegan · 04/05/2020 06:24

You can't get an accurate idea of colour from a computer or phone screen. Even when you put it up, metallic paper is going to look different depending on the light shining on it. I can't believe that you didn't unroll it, put it against the wall and check that it's what you wanted - especially when making such a dramatic choice.

It's a case of caveat emptor. I'd put it down to bad luck and notch it up to experience.

I'm also quite shocked that you would have a decorator in the house during lockdown, essentially mixing 2 households and putting the decorator (and their family) and yourselves at risk. I thought you were only supposed to have someone coming into the house for absolute emergencies eg burst pipe or broken boiler. It seems rather selfish and thoughtless to get someone in for something so frivolous.

CupoTeap · 04/05/2020 06:25

Pic 1&3 look the same.

I think you are complaining about the wrong thing, the decorator has done a terrible job.

BrightonBB · 04/05/2020 06:35

The pattern is different.
On your wallpaper (pic 3) the line ends. In the other pics it does not end. That is your argument for returning and not the colour.

ReluctantHillCrester · 04/05/2020 06:44

Were samples not available? Even to buy?

I cannot believe you bought wallpaper and didn't unroll it before having it put on the wall.

Even paint looks colours different depending on which wall it is on and where the light is coming from.

To the seller it looks like you want to keep the wallpaper up and also have a refund. Basically get your wallpaper for free. It reminds me of the woman who had her back windscreen replaced and said she was unhappy and asked for a refund. The guy refunds her and proceeds to put a hammper through the newly installed window. I can completely understand why your seller is saying strip the walls.

Send back what is left of the wallpaper so that the seller can check you got the right one, but let this be a lesson, order a sample first or at least unroll the wallpaper.

Amatteroftime · 04/05/2020 06:52

It looks the same as the listing, which also describes it as gold.
You are being the person that eats their entire meal at a restaurant and then says they aren't paying because they didn't like it.

CardiffRosie · 04/05/2020 06:53

All 3 pictures have different patterns I'm afraid OP. I think you should have checked it more carefully before hanging it.

RandomSelection · 04/05/2020 06:57

Pic 1 & 3 look the same to me. Pic 2 is of entirely different wallpaper (the pattern is different).

You should have opened the roll to check it was what you ordered before you allowed it to be put up. You cannot ask for a refund on something you have used but not checked. That's like ordering a chicken pizza, a beef one arrives but you eat it anyway and then demand a refund.

Having a decorator in is NOT essential in the current climate.

YABU

Oblomov20 · 04/05/2020 06:57

The wallpaper up looks terrible. Have you spoken up the decorator about what a poor job this is?

rawlikesushi · 04/05/2020 06:58

Well you either like it enough to keep it up, in which case you should pay for it.

Or you don't like it enough to keep it up, in which case it won't be a problem to send it back to her for a refund as requested.

And yes, mad to put wallpaper up without at least checking that you like it first.

And I hope you didn't pay the decorator - who shouldn't be in your home during lockdown really - because they did a very poor job.

Oblomov20 · 04/05/2020 06:59

Open up an eBay case. Send the Un-used tube back. Ask her if she really wants you to get the decorator to strip off the wallpaper and send that back too?
