To be ashamed to be British

yesterdayschild · 28/04/2020 15:29

Every day more and more British deaths. When compared to other countries some of them third world, we have an appalling death rate from Covid 19.
Why oh why did the government allow 3000 Spanish to enter just to watch a football match when Spain would not allow them to watch in their own country.
Why was the Stereophonics concert allowed when other countries had locked down.
Why are thousands of people still entering the U.K. with no checks.
Why are our NHS staff still begging for PPE

I am feeling very very low about all of this and wish I lived in some other country.

I would be more ashamed to have voted labour who would have completely destroyed the NHS and the economy

There's always one (andTwenty) isn't there..what bollocks

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 16:00

I seem to remember you remarking that allowing kids to take their A levels was worth losing a few lives @Xenia. God knows what our death rate would look like if we’d followed your advice.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/04/2020 16:01

I'm sure flights will resume at some point this year and then you can go and live in one of these amazing other countries. I'm sure you won't be missed here.

Hingeandbracket · 28/04/2020 16:01

Why are thousands of people still entering the U.K. with no checks.
Why are our NHS staff still begging for PPE

Because people keep voting for wealth redistribution to rich people.

I am feeling very very low about all of this and wish I lived in some other country.
As soon as lockdown is lifted, fell free to clear off.

PineappleDanish · 28/04/2020 16:01

Off you pop then. Bye!

GruffaIo · 28/04/2020 16:02

YABU.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/04/2020 16:03

Also, maybe it's because our nhs is so good, that we now have more deaths. To explain - an 80 year old obese man in the third world would already be dead. We would keep him alive through medicine and constant assistance. He now dies of covid-19. 1 more recorded death for us, non- for the third world country.

Hingeandbracket · 28/04/2020 16:03

I wish I were living in Sweden.
I wish you were.

WiseOwl69 · 28/04/2020 16:03

People that were born in Britain (and haven’t chosen/changed/etc their nationality) are British through luck, not design or some skill of our own.

To be proud or that or ashamed of that is weird.

If you are embarrassed by how our government have dealt with this then vote differently, and around election time go out and campaign. And imo we should be a little embarrassed (or maybe a lot?). Come on, Boris traipsing round a hospital shaking hands as a pandemic kicked off? Fucking idiot.

I’m never ashamed to be British but I’m not proud either. Not because I think we’re all amazing here, but more because there are nice people everywhere along with twats everywhere. The landmass you were born on or whatever doesn’t dictate how good you are and doesn’t immediately put you into a club with other Brits where you have to be all jolly and supportive together.

LakieLady · 28/04/2020 16:04

I'm ashamed of our government for being a bunch of useless twats who couldn't run a piss up in a brewery and thought they'd save a few quid by NOT keeping a decent stock of PPE in case of a pandemic, as the experts had recommended. I'm ashamed that their testing, reporting and recording has been so fucking shambolic.

But I'm not ashamed of being British.

TerrapinStation · 28/04/2020 16:05

Why would any one individual be ashamed, unless they happen to be part of COBR or SAGE they aren't responsible for any decisions or anyone else's actions

chunkyrun · 28/04/2020 16:06

That has to be one of the funniest self loathing posts I've read in months!

Who said I was British....

This government did everything right. Since January.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/04/2020 16:07

I don't understand why you'd be ashamed to be British because you don't agree with how our government is handling things? The government aren't the country, they're the body we (unfortunately) voted in to govern the country. None of the parties are any good.

I feel ashamed of some of the behaviour of some British people and think they let the side down; things like binge drinking, littering, fawning over celebrities and too much reality TV, but that's not Britain, just an aspect of it. People are people and there are positive and negative characteristics in everyone, we're not black and white, we're shades of grey too.

I don't idolise Captain Tom Moore either. Putting people on pedestals and bestowing endless adulation on them is what is putting this country into the sorry mess it's in.

Do you only ever back the 'winning side'? If so, then how is being a 'flip-flopper' any better? It's utterly pointless in my opinion. Do something to put Britain 'in lights' if you think it's that easy?

Weallhavevalidopinions · 28/04/2020 16:08

I don't think the OP will be back... the post earlier up indicated she flounced off and was telling us that she won't read this rubbish again...

A massive loss I must say

pallisers · 28/04/2020 16:09

You'd rather be in USA?

Well the death rate in the US is less than the published death rate in the UK and the just published UK excess death rate makes it likely the UK is severely underreporting deaths.

But I never understand the "ashamed to be whatever" thing

Mlou32 · 28/04/2020 16:09

Ok but why does any of the above make you ashamed to be British? Bit silly.

JellyfishandShells · 28/04/2020 16:10

I’m not at all shamed to be British - I’m proud of how we are all coping with a difficult situation, except for moaning minnies like you.Not sure why you think other nationalities are doing so much better.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 28/04/2020 16:11

♟ There yo go OP, in fact have another one for good measure ♟

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/04/2020 16:11

Well, OP can't have left the country as we're on lockdown so she'll have to be British for a bit longer yet.

DatingDickheads · 28/04/2020 16:11

I think the vast majority of people on MN would rather discuss (ACTUAL POSTS) someone having something stuck in their vagina, having an STD because you sleep with anybody, next doors dog, my husands smelly feet etc. I will not be reading any more of this rubbish on MN

I have an STD, I’ve missed that post though Hmm

RainMustFall · 28/04/2020 16:12

I am proud to be English and British and I support this Government as they are doing an excellent job by following the advice of the experts.

If you don't like it here, I wish you well with your move to a new country after lockdown has ended.

Mintjulia · 28/04/2020 16:12

YABU.

Every country has a different age spread, different social structures, different rates of obesity, diabetes, etc, different manufacturing facilities, different work and transport practices. Different reporting, Comparing outcomes is pointless that this stage.

Wait 3 years and then compare outcomes. If you're still ashamed to be British then, work to improve things, don't sit at your laptop and criticise.

user1468953505 · 28/04/2020 16:13

I am ashamed that people voted for this government but I also think that social media has been weaponised to bend opinion. This is on top of our appalling newspapers who've protected the wealthy for decades. It's allowed a shambolic, incompetent government to be in a strong position of power.

Can you imagine the papers in France talking about their President as a hero full of vim and vigour?

YouTheCat · 28/04/2020 16:13

What LakieLady said.

Ashamed of our government and a few groups of assorted idiots.
