To be ashamed to be British

yesterdayschild · 28/04/2020 15:29

Every day more and more British deaths. When compared to other countries some of them third world, we have an appalling death rate from Covid 19.
Why oh why did the government allow 3000 Spanish to enter just to watch a football match when Spain would not allow them to watch in their own country.
Why was the Stereophonics concert allowed when other countries had locked down.
Why are thousands of people still entering the U.K. with no checks.
Why are our NHS staff still begging for PPE

I am feeling very very low about all of this and wish I lived in some other country.

You actually bothered to type out Why oh why...

Isn't that the epitome of being British?

ajandjjmum · 28/04/2020 15:51

I would love to know how much the NHS pay their procurement people. Bet it's a pretty penny throughout the service. Should they not hold some responsibility for keeping on top of supplies?

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 28/04/2020 15:51

@thegcatsmother

Great post. Thank you Smile

Uygop · 28/04/2020 15:52

I've been ashamed to be British since the Brexit referendum. We've allowed ourselves to be fooled into supporting a right wing coup by the very rich, who serve only themselves. We're only just starting to reep what we sowed.

yesterdayschild · 28/04/2020 15:52

I think the vast majority of people on MN would rather discuss (ACTUAL POSTS) someone having something stuck in their vagina, having an STD because you sleep with anybody, next doors dog, my husands smelly feet etc. I will not be reading any more of this rubbish on MN

BirdieFriendReturns · 28/04/2020 15:52

Why does it matter? We are all just people.

cherrybunx0 · 28/04/2020 15:52

yabu to be ashamed to be British - that's really quite offensive.

I also think its unreasonable for you to be assuming at this point that we have an awful death rate in comparison to some third world countries who might not have even hit their peak yet

KellyHall · 28/04/2020 15:52

There are still many more reasons to be proud of our nation. You'll survive this pandemic with much better mental health if you try to focus on the positives.

OneandTwenty · 28/04/2020 15:53

The "government" is such an easy target at the moment. People cannot take responsibility, and blame everything on everyone else. Too strict or not strict enough, there's always loads to criticise which is much easier than making an actual decision yourself.

AgeLikeWine · 28/04/2020 15:53

The British government does not act in my name or with my consent so I have nothing to be ashamed of.

I am not ashamed because I did not vote for this government, nor did I vote for the Tory austerity which has crippled the NHS & our other public services nor did I vote for Brexit. In fact, I campaigned and demonstrated against it.

You might want to ask the people who did vote for these things if they are ashamed of Britain as it is in 2020, or if they are ashamed of the deaths that the government’s callous incompetence has caused.

PlanDeRaccordement · 28/04/2020 15:53

You can’t directly compare counties numbers of cases vs. Numbers of deaths to get death rates because every country is testing for cases and counting deaths differently.

The US is an unknown death toll. Over 50million people there have no healthcare whatsoever. So they are getting sick and dying without ever being tested or seen by a doctor.

At least here not France and the U.K. everyone has healthcare and will receive whatever they need.

Fluffybutter · 28/04/2020 15:54

Well I’m proud to be british but not proud of our government .. you should easily be able to distinguish between the 2

PlanDeRaccordement · 28/04/2020 15:54

*in France and U.K.

PeanutDouglas · 28/04/2020 15:54

There’s loads more to be ashamed to be British for, eg colonialism, Trans Atlantic slave trade etc.....Not sure why this has sparked you off

OneandTwenty · 28/04/2020 15:55

I would be more ashamed to have voted labour who would have completely destroyed the NHS and the economy. They are celebrating their recent failure, as they would have been completely incapable of directing the country and can safely attack every single decision. With the luxury of insight in the months to come, they can very safely come up with a better way to deal with things.

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 15:55

Thank you for saying exactly what I think so eloquently @AgeLikeWine.

Xenia · 28/04/2020 15:55

I didn't agree with schools closing nor the lock down but there we are. Luckily unlike in some countries we do not all have to have the same views. I favour the Swedish approach.

Kelsoooo · 28/04/2020 15:56

Oh do fuck off dear.

This is akin to comparing us to NZ ...you can't.

You'd rather be in USA? Where places they locked down have protestors trying to mow down medical staff?

Where they were queing outside gun shops? Where their leader thinks injecting bleach is a good idea?

Or Spain? Where children, fucking children, weren't allowed outside?

Or France where you got fined for daring to to go a further away supermarket?

Sure, we locked down late... Because if they'd locked us down earlier we (being the large we) wouldn't have adhered. People are struggling now. After five weeks.

No, I'm not ashamed to be British. I can look at my colleagues, friends, strangers and be proud of them. Be proud of where I come from and who I am. Because anything else is absolutely ridiculous.

Should Germans be ashamed to be German because of the Nazis? It's the same goddamn question.

FallonSwift · 28/04/2020 15:56

Glad you have decided to speak up for the vast majority on MN. We've needed a Head Girl for ages. Personally I blame everything on declining moral standards. This never would have happened if people weren't selfishly clicking on pointless threads about penis beakers and yoni massage.

Kelsoooo · 28/04/2020 15:57

Oh and the PPE issue dates back to 2009 fyi.

Everanewbie · 28/04/2020 15:57

OP why are you ashamed of your country because you perceive its leaders to have made some incorrect decisions?

PPE is a problem across several countries, Spain, Italy and France especially, even the bloody Guardian reported that.

It will take several months, if not several years for a fair assessement of whether we have done better or worse than other nations in terms of how we acted, but population density and other factors make direct comparison difficult.

In any case, I feel that on the whole the nation has been inspirational, the dedication of our key workers, volunteers, never thought I'd say this but the BBC and the public have overwhelmingly behaved themselves.

The time will come for an enquiry. For now I'm exceptionally proud of the people of this nation, and the dedication of the governement. I'm disappointed you feel differently.

Staticelle · 28/04/2020 15:58

I have actually found that the selflessness of the local community here has made me extremely proud to be British. But then I can comprehend that the actions of the government don't solely define an entire country.

Cantata · 28/04/2020 15:59

I wish I were living in Sweden.

walksen · 28/04/2020 15:59

I think early on there was lots of talk about hard immunity, comments about it being like flu and it seemed inevitable you would catch it and hope you were in the 99% who would recover. All this minimising of risks and the government seemingly intent on keeping things open led to people carrying on as normal.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/04/2020 15:59

Yabu.
I'm so thoroughly bored of negative people.
