To be ashamed to be British

Every day more and more British deaths. When compared to other countries some of them third world, we have an appalling death rate from Covid 19.
Why oh why did the government allow 3000 Spanish to enter just to watch a football match when Spain would not allow them to watch in their own country.
Why was the Stereophonics concert allowed when other countries had locked down.
Why are thousands of people still entering the U.K. with no checks.
Why are our NHS staff still begging for PPE

I am feeling very very low about all of this and wish I lived in some other country.

Personally I wouldn't want to be leading the call on this one. You have to remember that these decisions involved removing the liberty of everyone in this country, with no reliable predictions of what the outcome would be. That's massive! I think BJ was holding off from this hoping more solid info would arise and while I didn't vote for him I do repsect him for that. I don't get these sentiments, this is hardly the Black Death.

polobelt · 28/04/2020 16:48

Oh fuck off

Onone · 28/04/2020 16:48

Doesn’t help when people don’t adhere to social distancing, ignore the rules!

Everanewbie · 28/04/2020 16:49

Oh don't give me that about Panorama, all the 'whistleblowers' are paid up Corbynites that have a 'bring down the government' agenda. Look it up.

1forsorrow · 28/04/2020 16:49

I'm proud of the way that Nicola Sturgeon is handling her daily briefings.
Not that I expect most of you are considering her as 'British'. 'British' and 'English' are interchangeable on here.

I think she has been very professional, I suspect she would prefer to be referred to as Scottish rather than British.

Quarantimespringclean · 28/04/2020 16:50

I don’t understand patriotism or being ‘proud’ of your nationality. It’s not as if you made a choice, it’s a total accident of birth. I’m proud of what I work for and achieve, not of things I have no control over.

If I was born in North Korea I wouldn’t be ashamed that my leader was a nutter (if I was aware of it). If I was in New Zealand I would be happy that the government seemed to be doing a good job, but not proud of it. At the moment I’m not ashamed of any poor choices the elected government of my home country might have made, any more than I will be proud if it transpires that in the long run the decisions they are making work well.

At the moment I’m proud of the things I can control like observing the lockdown, minimising food waste, looking out for vulnerable friends and family, trying to stay active and healthy. I have opinions good and bad of things going on around me but those things are not a source of shame to me.

However one thing within my control is my vote. I’m very proud I always use it and even more proud that I’ve never used it to vote for the self serving Tory party.

Oh don't give me that about Panorama, all the 'whistleblowers' are paid up Corbynites that have a 'bring down the government' agenda. Look it up. We can only hope.

Perhaps we should copy Germany;

"German doctors pose naked in protest at PPE shortages."

TwelveMonkeys · 28/04/2020 16:51

Ironically this thing about feeling like you're worse than everyone else is a very British trait.

The death rate in Britain is comparable with most other countries. Stop being a drama queen.

derxa · 28/04/2020 16:51

I suspect she would prefer to be referred to as Scottish rather than British. She might but I am Scottish and British

MaMaLa321 · 28/04/2020 16:52

I'm not especially proud of being British. But I'm proud of my mum's neighbours, who hardly knew her before this and have made her Sunday lunch every week (we live several hundred miles away, so there's a limit on what we can do).
So, without wishing to sound like an idiot, I'm proud of human beings. OK, there's some wankers around, but it's better for my mental health to concentrate on the good stuff.
And I sometimes wonder if those who spout off about colonialism are aware that all European countries were colonialists.

mencken · 28/04/2020 16:54

as someone else pointed out, unless you were naturalised here, being British is an accident of birth. No more an achievement than your looks, just look. Hence a matter for neither pride nor shame.

What do you do to improve your community, OP?

Sarahandco · 28/04/2020 16:54

What country are you from OP, what do you think it has done better than the UK? It is a genuine question, we all know that mistakes have been made here.

Justaboy · 28/04/2020 16:55

"Lions led by Donkeys"

Twas ever thus:(

derxa · 28/04/2020 16:55

Do these conversations happen in Italy and France?

boylovesmeerkats · 28/04/2020 16:55

I can see where you're coming from. As for death rate being comparable that's nonsense. There is SO much the government could have done for so many of those people. Time and time again a callous, uncaring and not really competent government has been voted in time and time again because hatred seems to be a vote winner.

It's not constructive though really, but you're not alone.

Greenpop21 · 28/04/2020 16:55

Very proud of the scientific work going on at Oxford and Imperial.

ElizaCrouch · 28/04/2020 16:57

I'm not ashamed to be British at all. I'm not ashamed of our government either.

BMW6 · 28/04/2020 16:58

Ironically this thing about feeling like you're worse than everyone else is a very British trait.

Isn't it just! and it gets fucking tiresome! Hmm

1forsorrow · 28/04/2020 16:59

She might but I am Scottish and British I'm Irish and British but I prefer to be referred to as Irish.

rosiepony · 28/04/2020 16:59

Booooring

Gtugccbjb · 28/04/2020 17:01

Get over yourself. Honestly. Life’s so simple if you want it to be. Get up, get dressed. Love your family, laugh, connect with people, go to bed.

You’re mind is terrorising you if this is an issue for you right now. Go and watch a film or have a play fight with you’re kids.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 28/04/2020 17:01

I mean, I'm no more ashamed to be British than I am knowing our country voted for Brexit.

But I am incredibly ashamed of our government.

happyandsingle · 28/04/2020 17:02

I am ashamed at all the ppl that moan about being british and run down this country at every available opportunity.
If you don't like it here you know where the door is.You will not be missed.

loobyloo1234 · 28/04/2020 17:05
