Have just been watching the PE with him after being recommended it and maybe he’s having an off day but oh my, AIBU to ask if he seems so moany and whiny, not to mention he seems so out of breath. I’ve not seen him before - is this usual for him? I found the exercises ok so would watch again if this was just an off day

He seems so lovely and proud of his family that I’d be genuinely gutted if he turned up in a tabloid as a love rat or something.

I would normally hate the upbeat cheeriness but because we’re doing it with the kids it’s a lot easier to just throw yourself into it. A bit like Mr Tumble but instead of ‘You sign’ it’s ‘You do 30 seconds of burpees while telling me what the capital of Chile is’.

Oblomov20 · 27/04/2020 15:44

I haven't watched him. He's a bit to manic and upbeat for me to cope with.
Neither ds like him.

All my mum said friends said that on day 1,2 and 3, he nearly killed them and they were in pain for days. Ha ha.

michaelbaubles · 27/04/2020 15:44

Noble - it's almost like the old days of VAK, except instead of tricking "kinaesthetic" learners into finding out all about ionic bonding through playing piggy in the middle or some such, I'm being tricked into exercise while being distracted by facts. I might trademark this, I'll be an educational consultant this time next year.

noblegiraffe · 27/04/2020 15:45

not as fit as what he makes out.

I dunno, he looks pretty fit.

Grin I think you’re right!

Nosuchluck · 27/04/2020 15:50

If you watch his normal videos he is definitely fit, all the chat and padding is to engage the children. I think he’s doing great, asking for poetry, doing quizzes, keeping it all varied.

Poachedeggs1 · 27/04/2020 15:53

@Noblegiraffe A six pack doesn't automatically mean you are fit. Yeah it shows his body fat % is low and he's worked on his core muscles, doesn't mean he can run a marathon any faster than someone who doesn't have a six pack.

Being healthy and fit is all about consistency. It's not shoving a double cheeseburger down your throat and gorging on ice cream and chocolate, only to starve yourself for the rest of the week.

Pretty sure you can’t get a six pack by being unfit and lazing around all day though. I’ve given it a good try.

Abreadsandwich · 27/04/2020 16:09

I've done lots of different youtube workouts and in the past I've found his voice grating and his HIIT classes always hurt more the next day than I'm expecting!! (I am actually reasonably fit and was marathon training before lockdown)
However I've found renewed respect for him coming up with the concept and constantly tweaking the workouts to make them interesting. We really liked the coin toss one.
Most importantly for me its inspired my exercise hating teen DD to join in.shes not willing to get up at 9 to do it but she wants to include it in her day (later!) and we sometimes make our own workouts instead of doing Joe Wicks.
As well as doing all the live HIIT sessions, presumably he does his own training programme as well (off camera) as well as interviews.

CodenameVillanelle · 27/04/2020 16:22

Those moaning about the chatting and shout outs and wishing he would get on with it - you know he builds in rests between the sets right? If he didn't do that it would be far too tiring. He chats and does shout outs to fill the time between sets.

iklboo · 27/04/2020 16:24

I dunno, he looks pretty fit.

He's not my type. He looks like a washed Russell Brand.

ducksback · 27/04/2020 16:27

He is hilarious and I think the aim is to have a bit of fun and he pretends to be struggling to motivate the kids (adults!) who are struggling

People who do not understand this...well...catch yourselves on!

And poachedeggs1 just stop will you?

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 27/04/2020 16:35

I think he has learnt a bit as time has gone on. The first 'PE' session (lol - that ain't no PE lesson! ) he was wanging on for ages about himself, my kids were not impressed! But he has done a few bits to engage them since then, although we aren't bothering with them any more. I had done quite a few of his workouts before, loads of people never seemed to have heard of him?

He is one of those people that I have a bit of an irrational dislike for tbh. I don't think he could do things any other way... He can't help it that he has a gorgeous wife and children, a beautiful home and generally seems really happy, and has helped loads of people, and if his story is true, he has certainly come a very long way in 10 years. Plus, he is donating a proportion of what he is making off his PE videos to the NHS. But I do find him very smug, I can't help it!

Not sure he gives a shit though!

Nosuchluck · 27/04/2020 16:40

I love, love, love his carpet.

Justgorgeous · 27/04/2020 16:44

I think he is fantastic and myself and my children do his class 4 times a week.

Yogamad38 · 27/04/2020 16:54

I think he is brilliant, I love what he is doing for everyone. His sessions are fun, imaginative, good work outs for all ages. I've loved doing his sessions. Well done Joe 😀

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/04/2020 16:57

I want to know what colour his walls are. I might ask him and see if he replies.

NerrSnerr · 27/04/2020 18:21

We're doing them 2 or 3 times a week and my children love joining in (age 5 and 3). Obviously he's fit and he is putting on the huffing and puffing.

It's his job to get people to watch his videos and buy into his brand. Good on him for doing something positive and if that makes him more money that's fair enough. No one is forcing anyone to watch or join in. We're enjoying it in our house.

FellWanderer · 27/04/2020 18:28

I really enjoy the workouts. He does a mix of silly stuff and more focused stuff throughout the week. Its got me exercising daily for the first time ever which can only be a good thing!

Poachedeggs1 · 27/04/2020 21:27

@ducksback stop what? Are we not allowed to have a discussion/opinion? I gave you my personal opinion. (Like many others on here) ,l didn’t ask you to agree with it. Like I said, not my cup of tea, wished him luck, but I think there’s far more experienced, sensible and relatable fitness accounts out there that I follow instead.

LaurieMarlow · 27/04/2020 21:32

Yeah, my attempts to get a six pack by planting my arse on the couch and eating crisps have been bafflingly unsuccessful.

I wonder what his secret is? Grin

PapayaCoconut · 27/04/2020 21:58

This is going to sound really lame but he's really inspired me to keep my fitness levels up during lockdown. I normally go to the gym every day and I was worried about the effect on my mental health, so his sessions have been a bit of a pick-me-up and a motivation to get ready in the morning and not just sit around for hours drinking coffee in my pyjamas.

Saying that, I agree with you that he seemed to have a bit of an off day today, he's normally much more upbeat. But, you know, he's a human being with small children and he's going through all the same things as the rest of us, except he's also has to go in front of a million people every weekday morning.

I really hope that people remember to be kind to those who are in the public eye. They're often expected to live up to totally impossible standards and there's a really unpleasant tendency in the UK to build people up just so they can later be knocked down from their pedestal. Joe Wicks's father was a heroin addict and this made him want to go the compete opposite way in life. He's done it all himself and I think he deserves every bit of his success.

Fespital · 27/04/2020 22:36

My DDs prefer other exercise but I've been doing Joe's workouts in the evening on my own. Harder work than it looks!

20viona · 27/04/2020 22:52

My daughter is 9 months so she certainly isn't joining in but Iv done it every day it's great! It gets me moving and I'm knackered afterwards. I agree it differentiates weekdays and he's doing a fab job. Yes the shout outs are annoying but I just ignore that, I love the trivia!
