I've always loved crispy fried onions in a sandwich with butter and soft bread and I also love salad cream in a sandwich, usually with cheese.

I wasn't hungry enough for one of each and couldn't decide between the 2 fillings, so I put both the onions and the salad cream in the one sandwich.

Wow!😲

It was amazing.

I'd think you'd need to eat it as soon as it's made so the crispy onions don't go soft, but it's well worth trying 😋

Share your favourite sandwich filling with me to give me some more inspiration.

Any one else got any weird combinations, and how did you stumble upon it?

You don't make a sandwich from taramasalata! It's a dip, you dip freshly grilled herby pita bread in it! Lovely Kalamata olives on the side!

MrsMGE · 25/04/2020 19:16

OP, sugar sandwiches are the flavour of my childhood! Omg! I can't believe someone else had them too, it was my Nan's staple.

Chillipeanuts · 25/04/2020 19:23

Crunchy peanut butter and marmite, cream cheese and anchovies or garlic sausage and plum chutney, can’t decide which is favourite. First, sliced white and butter, second wholemeal with no butter but the anchovy oil instead and third in white baguette with butter on one side.

feelingverylazytoday · 25/04/2020 19:32

Take some crusty seedy granary bread. Butter. Spread generous layer of marmite on each slice, then mature cheddar, then caramalised onion chutney, and sliced tomato in the middle.

LakieLady · 25/04/2020 20:06

I’m partial to a mango chutney and Stilton sandwich

That sounds good.

I like really strong cheddar with blackcurrant jam.

MulticolourMophead · 25/04/2020 20:11

I make a sandwich filling using equal parts of tinned tuna and grated extra mature cheddar. Add a bit of mayo to moisten, season and place between two slices of buttered bread. Yum.

I've also used this filling with flour tortilla wraps. I sometimes add a pinch of smoked paprika to the mix.

EugenesAxe · 25/04/2020 22:39

Glad it's not being axed. Sorry I should have checked; I read a while back that they were thinking of stopping it due to lack of popularity, but maybe this thread will help Heinz pick up sales, so it's never discussed again Grin

LuminousAmber · 25/04/2020 22:41

One of my favourites is salmon paste (the really cheap jars) and salad cream. Bloody lovely.

Binkybix · 25/04/2020 22:49

Tortilla and mayonnaise. Chipsticks and coleslaw.

fitflopqueen · 25/04/2020 23:00

Cheese & onion crisps on white (or any other crisp flavour), pressed well down.
Peanut butter, apple and watercress on wholemeal - prob my favourite.
used to love salad cream sandwiches after school.

NoProblem123 · 25/04/2020 23:07

I had a bap at xmas with a veggie roast on complete with full Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes , carrots, sprouts and oozing in thick dark gravy. Warm, not hot.

Also, crisp sandwiches on thick white with full fat Lurpak. Food of the gods.

Girlinterruption2020 · 25/04/2020 23:24

Yes, has to be white bread with crisps. Most definitely

OpthalmosVerde · 25/04/2020 23:27

Blue cheese, pear, rocket and walnut. Had this in first class on a train heading home for Christmas once. Bonza.

Sandwich man at university used to do a cheddar, apple & carrot sarnie (all grated in mayonnaise, like a cheesy fruity coleslaw) which was amazeballs.

DP has been making brunch sarnies of late with sausage, bacon, fried egg, with ketchup and mustard and grated cheese on top. Manna. The mustard makes all the difference.

cushioncovers · 25/04/2020 23:39

I used to cut bread very thin (and evenly) so I expect I still could, but can't be arsed!

Up until about 15 years ago you could always get thin sliced bread as well as the medium and thick sliced.

EngagedAgain · 25/04/2020 23:44

@LakieLady
Yes that would work well although I've not tried it but it has themes of a cheesecake, of which blackcurrant is my favourite.

Also not a sandwich but any kind of cheddar goes well with a nice fruit cake.

Rose789 · 25/04/2020 23:46

Tuna pesto and mozzarella toasted in a panini is the best sandwich in the world. God now I’m starrrrrving reading this

Thewheelsarefallingoff · 25/04/2020 23:55

My favourites are probably pasta bake sandwich or potato waffle sandwich with salt and BBQ sauce. I had falafel and thousand Island dressing in my sandwich today.

BrandyandBabycham · 25/04/2020 23:58

Now I really really want fried onions! And I love salad cream! Tomato & salad cream sandwiches are great!
When I was a kid, DM always used to make egg & tomato sandwiches for picnics. Oh & if we had any other sort of sandwiches such as cheese & ham, she would always grill any leftovers. A lot of people think this an odd filling but I love cheese & jam. Has to be cheddar & strawberry or raspberry jam. And DM also introduced me to cream cheese & sultanas & cream cheese & date, which are surprisingly good. My absolute top sarnies though are 1) Smoked back bacon with vine ripened tomatoes, avocado, mayo & black pepper 2) Prawn mayonnaise, either on its own or with avocado 3) Ham, sweet corn & cottagecheese with pineapple 4) A Christmas leftovers sarnie with turkey, stuffing, cold bread sauce & roast veg on the side OMG!!

Knowhowufeel2 · 25/04/2020 23:59

Can't decide which one to try first, although it will have to be made from stuff I've already got to hand.

Bet lasagna sarnie would be lovely! Or maybe moussaka?

BrandyandBabycham · 26/04/2020 00:01

I love tuna too!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/04/2020 00:12

At the moment I’m enjoying sandwich made with toasted bread (not a toastie) with peanut butter and marmite - works better with smooth peanut butter

Tomorrow I shall have marmite with sliced hard boiled egg - something to look forward to Grin

Shall also have a snack of marmite with honey that’s something I wouldn’t have thought about but sounds good

I love egg mayo made with salad cream and and pickled jalapeños

mathanxiety · 26/04/2020 00:15

Flour tortilla and chunky peanut butter. Slather on the PB. Roll it up.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/04/2020 00:18

I wish I still had the toastie they made pocket toasted sandwiches

Toasted cheddar or Cheshire cheese sandwich nothing needed to be added as they were perfection

BrandyandBabycham · 26/04/2020 00:23

Forgotten about sugar sandwiches! On tiger bread. Loved the French thing of bread & chocolate. And dipping crusty baguette in hot chocolate .......
