I've always loved crispy fried onions in a sandwich with butter and soft bread and I also love salad cream in a sandwich, usually with cheese.

I wasn't hungry enough for one of each and couldn't decide between the 2 fillings, so I put both the onions and the salad cream in the one sandwich.

Wow!😲

It was amazing.

I'd think you'd need to eat it as soon as it's made so the crispy onions don't go soft, but it's well worth trying 😋

Share your favourite sandwich filling with me to give me some more inspiration.

Any one else got any weird combinations, and how did you stumble upon it?

Crunchy peanut butter and Heinz sandwich spread. It's amazing how many of those I can get through in one sitting.

Or egg mayo, chop off a lot of the white so that it's mostly yolk, and a bit of mustard mashed in. On really soft granary bread with plenty of butter.

Doublevodka · 25/04/2020 15:52

I'm a child of the 80s. When I was a kid, my best friend's favourite sandwich was either a sugar butty or a tomato ketchup butty. She is now 50 and I think she still eats them occasionally. Hmm

Knowhowufeel2 · 25/04/2020 16:09

@theThreeofWeevils, I've used the term 'crispy' because that's the name of the product.

I'll go and read the rest now, lol, but felt I had to comment on that.

@ShirleyPhallus, I'm not feeling well, and I'd already had dinner, plus I do find bread filling/bloating.

My husband made me lunch the other day - thick, smoked bacon in a toasted, buttered, cinnamon and raisin bagel. I looked at him like he’d lost it, but it was SO GOOD

theThreeofWeevils · 25/04/2020 16:20

Yes - so I said it (probably) wasn't your fault Wink

'Crispy' is just a bee in my bonnet. 'Fry until crispy' - nooooooo! delete that 'Y' or feck off.

Cracking thread, this. Sandwich porn. (please don't anyone tell me that's a real porn thing - that would be upsetting)

Rare roast beef
Horseradish

Knowhowufeel2 · 25/04/2020 16:41

That sounds tasty, Bluebell878275, I'll have to give that a try.

@BumTitTit25, some of the supermarkets do them in their world food aisle, costs under £2 for 400g.

@SunshineCake, no, just as they come, straight out of the packet.

Thanks for the suggestions to try potato in some form or another.
I tried a hot mashed potato sandwich today on white bread with butter. It was also pretty good and very comforting (had some left over from dinner, but not enough to make a meal with).

@Laiste, yes, they do still sell Sandwich Spread. I found some last year in one of the big 4 supermarkets, which awakened my love for salad cream too.

@Boredbumhead, try the salmon with salad cream instead of the mayo, as it's already tangy(vinegary), it's good.

My daughter likes jam and ham on white bread with butter.

I love crisp sandwiches, which is where I got the idea from about the crispy onions. A few years back I had a craving for a crisp sandwich, but didn't have crisps in, and just thought I'd try them instead.

I'm going to get fat trying all of these sandwich combinations out though. I don't think there many I won't be tempted to try. I hate marmite, but I might even give that a go, as I'm sure I've got some hiding in the cupboard somewhere and the umami one sounded interesting .

As a child, I loved:

sugar sandwiches with white bread and real butter
Tomato ketchup or salad cream either on buttered toast or white bread with butter
Condensed milk sandwich with white bread and butter.

I still have them occasionally 😊😚

Cheddar and lime pickle on toast

Cheese, crisps and branston pickle

Fish fingers, salad cream and capers.

Knowhowufeel2 · 25/04/2020 16:43

No worries, weevil, I really hope not too, although nothing much surprises me nowadays.

Pot noodle sandwiches, loads of butter so it melts down your chin.

gavisconismyfriend · 25/04/2020 16:47

Corned beef and brown sauce
Cottage cheese and ketchup

Knowhowufeel2 · 25/04/2020 16:52

*there aren't many I wouldn't try.

We need a bloody edit function as my phone always thinks it knows better than me, and I don't always proofread.

Fresh crusty roll/baguette with bacon, brie, cranberry sauce and rocket leaves.

Grated cheese and chopped grapes (green/white) mixed with mayo in a wrap.

White bread, ham and sandwich spread.

My ex used to eat mashed potato sandwiches which seem wrong to me. No idea why as I also love a chip butty

Nymerialuna · 25/04/2020 16:55

Chips and baked beans with white bread is a favourite trash food.
For an indulgent (and very filling) sandwich, chicken, stuffing, mayo, cranberry jelly and cucumber. At Christmas, replace chicken with turkey and add in sliced pigs in blankets.

HowCowBrownNow · 25/04/2020 16:55

Salad cream is bloody lovely! It works with scrambled eggs on toast. I'm not very keen on mayo unless it's garlic mayo.

Cottage cheese and marmite sandwiches are a favourite in my house.

I have a lockdown birthday on a few weeks and I'm already planning to have a really nice sarnie on white bread or maybe seeded, a bag of Walkers sweet chilli sensations crisps and a Bounty bar for lunch. I haven't eaten aBounty in years.

Boilingbunny · 25/04/2020 17:10

Danish blue and taramasalata. Sounds revolting, tastes amazing.

God, that sounds heavenly. @Ineedanamechangeagain. I'm going the supermarket soon because I think the queue might have died down. Inspired by you, I'm going to get some hot cross buns (bagels are too chewy) and nice bacon. Maybe some cool brie to go with the toasted bun and hot bacon. I'll report back.

limitedperiodonly · 25/04/2020 17:27

My favourite was salami, mozzarella, dried tomatoes - no butter, just the olive oil from the tomatoes - on thick white bloomer with black pepper. Sadly, the shop is no more, and I can't make it the same.

cheesemongery · 25/04/2020 17:53

Kicking myself looking back at my posts - why don't I have fish fingers and salad cream in?! Salmon and mayo is just weird.

I'm on my own today for the first time in 30 days... I've been mixing this hot jalepeno sauce squeezy bottle with mayo on cheap bread. It's a lazy take on my coleslaw on jalepeno. Very lazy. Extremely.

Still it's too hot to cook and erm, cut up a bit of lettuce and cucumber Grin

I also like to do a pitta with loads of salad, chilli peppers and garlic mayo and pretend I'm having a dirty donner.

Lonelycrab · 25/04/2020 18:00

Pot noodle sandwiches, loads of butter so it melts down your chin

This sounds so incredibly wrong it’s probably actually extremely tastyGrin

lyralalala · 25/04/2020 18:04

Roast potatoes, bit of ketchup on white bread spread with salted butter

I actually prefer the leftover sandwich supper to the roast dinner

Girlinterruption2020 · 25/04/2020 18:08

We have simple tastes over here. Ham and salt and vinegar crisps on white bread with a thin spread of proper butter.

It’s an exact science.

Ineedanamechangeagain · 25/04/2020 18:34

Oo hot cross buns sounds like a nice twist limitedperiodonly!

GenevaMaybe · 25/04/2020 18:40

@Boilingbunny I have always found taramasalata to be The devil’s work. And I love fishy things.
