Is it just me, or is Netflix a bit shit?

I really struggle to find anything to watch.

I know it bases recommendations on viewing history, i blame you DP for your ropey taste in "action" films.

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm referring specifically to films rather than series although im not enamoured of its offerings. The tiger king can fuck right off for a start.

Any suggestions to save my lockdown sanity?

I like horror and drama but more spooky and atmospheric than mindless gore fest.

Quite like older films. Found Goodfellas the other week which was good.

Haunting on Hill House is a good, scary programme. But it is a series rather than a film. I watch a lot of horror and it got me scared!

Daisy169 · 21/04/2020 05:54

No recommendations sorry, I like mind numbing chick flick type stuff, but can you set up a profile for just yourself? Then your recommendations on there will build from what you like.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 21/04/2020 05:54

Ha ha ! Yes the Tiger King can fuck off indeed. No idea why so many are recommending it, looks shit.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 21/04/2020 05:55

There are some good Netflix recommendation threads though tbf. I'll see if I can link one.

mynameisntlouise · 21/04/2020 06:06

You should make your own profile, you can have as many as you want on one account.

We got rid of Sky last year and don't have Freeview or anything so we use Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and other free apps like BBC and 4OD on the playstation, we pay about £21 a month for all three paid ones but it's worth it when my step-son is here and watches in his room at the same time.

There is a lot of crap on Netflix and there's many I've started and abandoned. What sort of genre do you like? I watched the first season of Dr Foster recently which was good (second season wasn't as good but I finished it). It's sort of Family drama.

Also Harlen Cohen's Safe was good if you can persevere a few episodes which it takes to get going, a mystery thriller.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 21/04/2020 06:11

OP said she likes psychologically spooky/horror no gore and atmospheric drama,

Me too hence placemark.

JeSuisPoulet · 21/04/2020 06:15

The point of it is that it will recommend on viewing history - which is actually quite annoying in some cases, plus my gripe is that it seems to forget if you have watched something already. I also don't like the sound blaring on the top show they advertise...but hey, I digress.

If you like certain genres you can specify this somewhere. I seem to remember a "getting you started" or similar and agree you need your own profile. I love crime drama and they have Prime Suspect and lots of true crime series and Netflix original shows where they look at crimes. However that leads to some pretty rubbish recommendations (Freud I'm looking at you) with 97% matches. I also love comedy and science based shows (because we are multifaceted despite what algorithms seem to want to believe) which has resulted in some odd profiling. Sens8 was my all time favourite but they ended it because it didn't attract many viewers apparently.

If you can't find anything in English you can always try the Australian suggestions or French films too if you like international film. It can be hit and miss but when it hits it is amazing.

BertieBotts · 21/04/2020 06:16

Defo get your own profile. But I did get bored with it after a while. Sugar we weren't watching it we cancelled it for a bit and once some new stuff builds up that we want to watch we might get it again.

I enjoyed gilmore Girls and orphan black. I think fringe is on the UK one? I loved that as well. Orphan black/fringe are sort of sci fi but based in our world, not space. Gilmore girls is just old and comfort type watching.

BertieBotts · 21/04/2020 06:17

Oh god yes I'd forgotten about the blaring sound - that's one of the things which put me off browsing at all.

JeSuisPoulet · 21/04/2020 06:18

Mindhunter if you like crime - it's the story behind serial killer profiling Smile

Burplecutter · 21/04/2020 06:19

We have 4 profiles set up on ours. In the beginning I went through a lot of the content and added things to "my list" for my profile and DDs profile. Even if I knew there wasn't enough time to actually watch it all. Just so my recommendations would be based on the type of prog we would like to watch, so it's not infiltrated with things someone else wants to watch.
You could do that.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 21/04/2020 06:20

Have you tried the Umbrella Academy?

JeSuisPoulet · 21/04/2020 06:21

Comedy (dark) recommendations I'd say After Life with Ricky Gervais. It works in mysterious ways!

Mistybee · 21/04/2020 06:22

Silence of the lambs
Hannibal
Red dragon
I have all 3 on my list to watch

You might enjoy the series “sons of anarchy” too

MadameF · 21/04/2020 06:24

Ha ha ! Yes the Tiger King can fuck off indeed.
Yes, I thought that when I read the premiss of the series. Until DD and DH binge watched the whole series on Easter Monday afternoon. I caught a couple of episodes (I hate sitting down for a long time) and it is really wtf TV, utterly unbelievable but true.
My DC watch Netflix a lot more than I do, but there are some good documentaries on there.

RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 21/04/2020 06:25

What about You?

JeSuisPoulet · 21/04/2020 06:33

'You' is pretty gory in parts but a good thriller where you find yourself almost rooting for the killer.

End of The Fucking World is a funny dark comedy that I enjoyed too.

Black Mirror if you want a dark look into the imagined future (some of the older ones are scarily accurate.

Adfghvg · 21/04/2020 06:34

We subscribe in winter for a couple of months. Then cancel until the next year. We watch mindhunter, house on haunted hill, stranger things. There are some quality programmes. But we find alot of things are aimed more for teens. We don't have children. There is not enough on there to keep us entertained all year.

HappyBirthdayQueenieMarm · 21/04/2020 06:37

Hipsters love tiger king and netflix.

AnyOldPrion · 21/04/2020 06:39

Recommend The Conjuring and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Watched both recently as I’ve been on a bit of a horror kick since lockdown.

LunaHardy · 21/04/2020 06:39

The Stranger
You
Money Heist
Lovesick

Just some of the series I've watched recently and all were brilliant!

Quirrelsotherface · 21/04/2020 06:40

It's a bit overhyped. I've never seen a film I actually wanted to watch on there until I saw they'd added 'A Quiet Place' which I've wanted to see for ages. I also enjoyed the Stranger but feel you have to wait ages for anything decent to be on there.

Onemorefuck · 21/04/2020 06:40

I’m just gonna keep suggesting Russian Doll.

Kiln · 21/04/2020 06:40

Don't know if it's still there, but a documentary series called Making A Murderer, it's about Steven Avery a man wrongly convicted...

I think it's worth a watch Smile

JeSuisPoulet · 21/04/2020 06:42

Unbelievable is a good crime drama based on real life too.

Crazy Ex Girlfriend was one I didn't expect to like but did - easy comedy.

(Sorry, am going through Netflix trying to see what I did like)
