Is it just me, or is Netflix a bit shit?

I really struggle to find anything to watch.

I know it bases recommendations on viewing history, i blame you DP for your ropey taste in "action" films.

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm referring specifically to films rather than series although im not enamoured of its offerings. The tiger king can fuck right off for a start.

Any suggestions to save my lockdown sanity?

I like horror and drama but more spooky and atmospheric than mindless gore fest.

Quite like older films. Found Goodfellas the other week which was good.

Have hoo watched The Walking Dead?

I don't think it's great for films either but for series, Netflix is amazing

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 21/04/2020 06:43

Grin HappyBirthday

JeSuisPoulet · 21/04/2020 06:43

YY to Russian Doll and Making a Murderer!

HairyToity · 21/04/2020 06:46

I like Anne with an E for pretty landscapes and escapism.

Also enjoyed watching Worlds Most Extraordinary Homes.

Boireannachlaidir · 21/04/2020 06:46

It's not just you, it is actually a bit shit.

It doesn't matter whose profile you're on, there inevitably is mainly a whole lot of dross with a few good things in there which can take ages to discover.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 21/04/2020 06:46

Not Netflix and I don't know if you like French films but 'Chanson Douce' by Leila Slilami was fantastique - even better if you've read 'Lullaby' by her first.

Even Ds rated it, a fifteen yr old avoiding his French homework.

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 21/04/2020 06:47

I'm inclined to agree. I've found more high quality content on Disney+. I'll keep Netflix for the kids though, they would riot if I got rid.

JeSuisPoulet · 21/04/2020 06:48

Dark and weird based on true life is Don't F**k With Cats - couldn't stop watching it although I was Confused

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 21/04/2020 06:48

Leila Slimani, sorry.

LunariaAlba · 21/04/2020 06:49

Agree! I spend a spiritless 20 mins scrolling along tripe.
YY to the tiger tripe an'all

hardyloveit · 21/04/2020 06:49

Time The story of Kalief Browder is amazing!

shinyredbus · 21/04/2020 06:50

I like it so yabu 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oysterbabe · 21/04/2020 06:53

There aren't loads of great films on there, although there are some. There are some absolutely fantastic series.

lokoho · 21/04/2020 06:54

I have my own profile so it's better but I agree it pushes stuff I just DO NOT WANT way too much.

There's no way to hide stuff - it will keep presenting you things even if you thumbs down it - so when it gets a bee in its bonnet about a genre it can get useless quickly. Well, the main page does get unusable and you have to go into the menus and find specific things you actually like and try to steer it back.

But for me it has got really stubborn lately because I watched some k-drama and it cannot differentiate genres for foreign shows. I am not interested in high school romances, Netflix! I am not interested in school stories, in teen shows, in teenagers. Give it a rest!! I use Viki now to watch k-drama and just watch stand up comedy and science fiction on netflix.

EdwinaMay · 21/04/2020 06:54

Mindhunter - the sex was a bit in your face (literally).
Seemed a needless addition thus aiming the series at a demographic that didn't include me. Was a bit slow too. And yet another murder investigator with family problems/ odd personality (which increased their investigatory ability) / an ordinary but likeable sidekick etc (same old trope).
I've had enough murder investigation ta.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/04/2020 06:55

I love it, and rarely watch box sets.
I mainly watch documentaries and films.
You just have to poke about a bit to gind dtuff.
I generally go through the drama category for films, or hidden gems brings up good stuff.
Often I just choise something randomly and watch anyway, as its a film not much time wasted if its crap.

susiederkins31 · 21/04/2020 07:02

No recommendations sorry, but you can turn off the sound playing on trailers as you browse.

Login to Netflix on the web, go to manage profiles and there should be an option to uncheck “Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices”.

PhoenixIsFlying · 21/04/2020 07:04

Ooh watch ‘ You’ it was fantastic

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/04/2020 07:05

I will say though, (sorry folks), I've given up asking for recs on here, because no matter how much you stress you want a film, 90% of people will suggest a box set.
"I know you said film but this box set is amazing"
It may well be, but I want to watch a film!
Last time I asked I was told to watch Stranger things box set, and I wouldn't regret it.

  1. Its not a film.
  2. Its not a drama which is what I asked for
  3. I've seen it, watched the first series with my daughter, not my thing, but enjoyed spending time with her.
Had I watched it in my own, yes, I would regret it.
LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 21/04/2020 07:07

Lol Brillo.

Klonda · 21/04/2020 07:09

For the first few episodes it seems like a below-par adult animation, but Bojack Horseman is just incredible.

Lexijayde44 · 21/04/2020 07:10

In the last four years I've watched

Pretty little liars
Riverdale
You
The stranger
The tiger king lol!
The sinner

The haunting of hill House
The secrets of cricket hall
Little boy blue
Wrong move

I also like to rewatch episodes of friends and Gavin and Stacey.

I like a bit of comedy
A good drama
Mild horror.

I'm early 30s and still can enjoy the teen series sets like pretty little liars!

It depends on your taste. But I would say there's something on there for everyone. Sports fans to horror fans to romance. Tons of documentaries etc.

Perhaps you just don't enjoy screen time and that's ok lol.

choc71 · 21/04/2020 07:14

I watch a lot of foreign language films, so it works really well for me from that point of view, but I agree, it can be quite hit and miss if you're not looking for something specific.

BlancheDuBlah · 21/04/2020 07:15

OP is specifically asking for films an I right?

Why are posters regurgitating series?

boatyroo · 21/04/2020 07:16

@susiederkins31
Thank you so much. I've just done this. If this works for our TV app you have saved our sanity!
I've looked through the settings in the app itself so many times, didn't think to try settings on the web version!
