Is it just me, or is Netflix a bit shit?

I really struggle to find anything to watch.

I know it bases recommendations on viewing history, i blame you DP for your ropey taste in "action" films.

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm referring specifically to films rather than series although im not enamoured of its offerings. The tiger king can fuck right off for a start.

Any suggestions to save my lockdown sanity?

I like horror and drama but more spooky and atmospheric than mindless gore fest.

Quite like older films. Found Goodfellas the other week which was good.

I find you get some gems intertwined with a lot of low budget, samey shit when it comes to the films especially. I don't think I've ever watched a bad series on Netflix though.

Makeitgoaway · 21/04/2020 07:51

Yes! I'm not a film buff but I find uve never heard of most of the films on there are it's really hard to pick the "proper" films from the almost amateur special interest ones or the TV movies, also to know what the flippin' film is even about. They need to provide more info in the blurb.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 07:51

Having said that Death of Stalin is great

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 21/04/2020 07:51

I went off Netflix when I realised they'd shaved about 15 minutes off of every episode of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes - any platform that thinks it's OK to do that is not worth using, in my opinion.

SkylinesTurnstiles · 21/04/2020 07:51

Watch Ozark!

bluebluezoo · 21/04/2020 07:54

Yep I rarely watch it. If dh and the kids didn’t i would get rid.

Much prefer amazon prime. Plus free next day parcel delivery!!

Gruffawoah · 21/04/2020 07:59

I agree that it can be hard to find stuff, there's almost too much on there. I usually Google and there's plenty of websites that give recommendations according to what you say you enjoy, much better I find than their recommended list!

MontysOarlock · 21/04/2020 08:09

Just as cdtaylor says you need the specific codes

so for psychological thrillers it's 5505 put that in the search bar. cdtaylor has linked a list up thread and at the bottom of that page is a link to an even more comprehensive list, but basically you need this type of breakdown

Thrillers (8933)

Action Thrillers (43048)
Classic Thrillers (46588)
Crime Thrillers (10499)
Foreign Thrillers (10306)
Independent Thrillers (3269)
Gangster Movies (31851)
Psychological Thrillers (5505)
Political Thrillers (10504)
Mysteries (9994)
Sci-Fi Thrillers (11014)
Spy Thrillers (9147)
Steamy Thrillers (972)
Supernatural Thrillers (11140)

You need to stop using your Dh's account and set up your own. We have 4 accounts one for each of us. That is not devices, just accounts. See if you can set one up for yourself.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 21/04/2020 08:11

This is a useful thread. I find it the same as I don’t find it intuitive to search and don’t really like relying on its recommendations. I find keeping an eye on new releases helpful

The other big issue that I’ve got is my concentration seems shot to bits at the moment and watching anything - particularly documentaries - which characters are going through traumatic times really anxiety inducing. Normally I love a good documentary. I’m going to try watching the good wife or similar which I hope might be possible

EstebanTheMagnificent · 21/04/2020 08:11

You need your own profile so that it can learn what you like. Stranger Things and The Haunting of Hill House might be up your street.

@IHaveBrilloHair how is Stranger Things not a drama?!

SecretsInSpitalfield · 21/04/2020 08:13

Op - some films on Netflix that are creepy , thriller type and ‘edge of your seat’

The Visit - two kids visit their grandparents farm and decide to make a film about their family but soon discover some pretty weird dark secrets. SUCH a good film imo and made by the great M. Night Shymalan

The Prodigy- little boy starts behaving strangely, mum suspects something malevolent and searches for answers

A quiet place - this is great .. everyone has to be in silence for fear that any sound will attract terrifying alien creatures

Hush - a deaf writer goes to live in the woods to live a solitary life and masked killer appears in her window

The open house- after a tragedy a mum and son move to a relatives holiday home and eerie and unexplained forces conspire against them

Code 8- (watched this last night) city where super powered people are ostracised , a (very handsome) man uses his outlawed abilities for money to save his sick mother

The platform - this blew my mind! A slab of food descends floor by floor in a prison. Inmates above eat to heart content, leaving those below starving and desperate.

The invisible guest- guy finds his now dead lover in hotel room. Becomes murder suspect. It’s a Spanish film with subtitles but very good imo

I think Netflix is good for series, Amazon Prime is better for films (but a lot of them involve paying an extra fee).

I think there's enough good stuff on Netflix to make it worthwhile, but there's also a lot of crap to sift through and in general I find it a pain to navigate - finding stuff you like isn't easy. Also there are a lot of true-life crime documentary series on there and I've never found any of them particularly engrossing, despite the fact that lots of other people rave about them (Tiger King and The Jinx both made me nod off, for example).

The series on there I've really enjoyed are Stranger Things, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul (which is better than Breaking Bad IMHO), Bates Motel, The OA and Haunting of Hill House. 'You' is quite good too, though incredibly silly.

For anyone with Amazon Prime, we just watched the new movie Vivarium at the weekend and it's the best film I've seen in quite a while.

NekoShiro · 21/04/2020 08:16

Go on YouTube, search for something like 'best psychological horrors on UK netflix' watch the inevitable watch mojo/whatever appears highest with high views top ten list aand sift through them til you find something

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 21/04/2020 08:17

Xpost with monty!

Herja · 21/04/2020 08:18

Alias Grace.
It's a series, Netflix original I think. A psychological (predominantly, it's based around a murder) period drama. I loved it.

KindnessCrusader · 21/04/2020 08:20

@BlancheDuBlah he is awesome in every other way so I try and overlook this VERY ANNOYING trait!

Lynda07 · 21/04/2020 08:21

I found 'Greenleaf' very good though by third series it had become soapy. The early ones were gripping!

Somebody recommended a series called, "How to get away with murder', I haven't watched it yet.

The Crown is marvellous, I binge watched all series.

I agree with you about Tiger King, couldn't be bothered with that.

randomer · 21/04/2020 08:22

Its awful, I really regret gobbling up the good stuff during the Winter.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 21/04/2020 08:23

Op, I don't have Netflix, have Amazon Prime instead, but I can recommend two films that fit your brief, they are both spooky and atmospheric: "The Others" with Nicole Kidman and "The Gift" with Cate Blanchett (2000), both fantastic films that have you on the edge of your seat, but no gorefest. Hopefully you can get them on Netflix.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 21/04/2020 08:26

I agree with everyone else that making your own profile is key. But Netflix really is a bit rubbish for films: especially classic films. The only real classics I could find were Some Like It Hot and The Wizard Of Oz.

But you should definitely watch A Quiet Place, and I’d highly recommend Death of Stalin and the underseen Annihilation (very atmospheric sf horror).

PianoTuner567 · 21/04/2020 08:29

Netflix seem to have gone for quantity rather than quality in the last year or so. An awful lot of the Netflix-originated stuff is dross, so you have to spend time looking for something decent. But there is stuff there.

I wish they’d stop just churning out content and be a bit more discerning.

Itsabitmessy · 21/04/2020 08:39

I totally agree. I’ve had one free trial to watch Stranger Things 1. Then a months sub to watch the second series. Then another to watch The Haunting Of Hill House. Each time I’ve watched the series I took the sub out to watch and then struggled to find anything else at all that I fancied watching. The films in the main are like the old Blockbuster bottom of the bin finds - old, already been on mainstream tv years ago crap . Same with tv series. Documentaries have often been on tv too. If you like crime you a well catered for. I think I’m in the minority though because so many people I know seem to find loads to watch on it.

nitgel · 21/04/2020 08:41

Have you seen Freud op ?

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 21/04/2020 08:46

Google JUSTWATCH UK. It’s a streaming search engine that shows you what’s available on the various streaming services and you can filter by genre.

I don’t know what way Netflix decides it’s “recommendations” but despite having my own profile it suggests a lot of shite for me that seems to have no connection to the type of stuff I usually watch. There are a lot of good shows and films on there, they just make it difficult to find them 🙄.
