Is it just me, or is Netflix a bit shit?

I really struggle to find anything to watch.

I know it bases recommendations on viewing history, i blame you DP for your ropey taste in "action" films.

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm referring specifically to films rather than series although im not enamoured of its offerings. The tiger king can fuck right off for a start.

Any suggestions to save my lockdown sanity?

I like horror and drama but more spooky and atmospheric than mindless gore fest.

Quite like older films. Found Goodfellas the other week which was good.

'am'

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/04/2020 07:16

Anyway, my favourite film of this week on there is Brian Banks.
Look it up and see if it interests you but basically guy trying to clear his name after being in prison, based on a true story.

milveycrohn · 21/04/2020 07:19

My favourite is 'Godless', - a limited series, actually a western with Michelle Docherty
Breaking Bad - TV series (several seasons)
Better Call Saul - TV series - based on a characater from Breaking Bad - better than I expected.
Contagion - film (about a pandemic - interesting to compare to real life)
A Quiet Place (film with Emily Blunt)
Emma - old BBC TV series - to compare to recent film, which I saw before Lockdown
Russian Doll (series)
Witcher (but bored after about 4 epidosdes)
Orange is the New Black - TV series - several seasons - I really loved it.
The Crown - TV series 3 seasons so far. much more interesting than I expected.
The disappearance of Madeleine McCann - documentary series - I thought I knew it all, but this was very good
The Mind of Aaron Hernandez - similar documentary

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/04/2020 07:20

Absolutely do not reccomend "The boy next door"
Its like one of those channel 5 films but not even so bad its good, its just bloody awful.

AntiSocialDistancer · 21/04/2020 07:21

Set your own profile. I tend to watch it in waves.

Lovinglockdownlife · 21/04/2020 07:21

It’s brilliant if you like foreign tv/films.
Dark is absolutely brilliant.

wanderings · 21/04/2020 07:22

I'm not yet a member of Netflix; I am very wary of being sucked into things like that. Does anyone know, is it possible to find out what's on Netflix if you're not a member, so I can decide if it might be worth it?

I know there's the much publicised "1 month free, cancel at any time", but I wouldn't be surprised if it's tricky to cancel, like Amazon Prime.

Netflix is shit.

astrogirl99 · 21/04/2020 07:24

Ozark is absolutely brilliant!!!!! Spooky, American southern gothic, about a marriage, power, greed etc... Shakespearean stuff.

Agree that Tiger King can bugger off, I couldn't even get through the first ep (animal cruelty onscreen, it was that simple for me). Also I thought they tried to make Joe interesting when he really is just a twat.

Good luck!

KindnessCrusader · 21/04/2020 07:25

'Ha ha ! Yes the Tiger King can fuck off indeed. No idea why so many are recommending it, looks shit.'

This comment reminds me of my Dad who almost without fail is negative about books I've enjoyed based purely on a review he's read...not the actual book, just the review. Lazy.

RickOShay · 21/04/2020 07:33

I enjoyed Good Girls. Kept me going for a while, it’s about three friends who turn to crime, it’s just funny and relatable enough, with a bit of suspense.

BlancheDuBlah · 21/04/2020 07:35

Reminds me of my dad too. Total mindless sheep.

PhilipJennings · 21/04/2020 07:39

You're right about the films. Recently i haven't wanted to watch any of the ones on there. DH wants me to watch The Irishman or The Two Popes, but I'm just not interested in those. We recently sat down to watch Uncut Gems and I hated all the characters from the start and fell asleep 40 minutes in. Won't be picking it up again!

But the box sets are the true gems. I think some of the foreign language content is great. One I've particularly enjoyed recently is Dark - it's a Netflix original made in German and a bit supernatural/spooky. It has a 3-series arc and the third and final season is due out later this year. If you like spooky and atmospheric this is for you!

I also binge watched The Forest, a French detective show about runaway girls (but set in a small village where the cops know everyone which made for a lot of interesting relationships).

Better Call Saul is great. It originated as a spin off from Breaking Bad, but it's more of a comedy drama charting the path of one Jimmy McGill from small-time conman to criminal defence lawyer to a drug cartel. The cast of characters is great with multilayered rich relationships and background and it's quite slow moving, focusing more on the characters than any drug crime action. It's a very different show to Breaking Bad. DH first wanted to watch it, but I think I like it even more than him now and I'm mainly watching it for the female lead, she is really great and has the most expressive face. There is not much gore despite what you might expect; the drug cartel story doesn't really get going until the 4th season but for the most part I noticed that the most tense scenes are not ultimately violent ones.

I'm also not into Tiger King at all. We watched the first episode and both were meh about it. I'd watch more if I absolutely ran out of other things. So instead we watched Giri/Haji on BBC iPlayer which was amazing, a Japanese yakuza drama set in London and Tokyo (and which is a Netflix/BBC collaboration and will be released on there shortly!). I gather the Netflix budget allowed them to make it so well, so I would think that's a good example of the kind of content that's worth watching.

SoloMummy · 21/04/2020 07:39

Set up your own user profile. That way recommendations will be based on your viewing choices.

zukiecat · 21/04/2020 07:40

Netflix is great because it took over The Last Kingdom from the BBC, for that alone it is worth the money each month. Simply the best thing that's ever been on tv.

I've lost count of how many times I've watched the three series, and eagerly waiting for S3 which starts this Sunday.

Destiny Is All.

Roussette · 21/04/2020 07:41

YABU! I won't recommend anything to you, because I really don't know what you like but...

You remind me of my friend who says 'Netflix is shit isn't it'... but she has the attention span of a gnat and never goes and actually spends time looking into what she might like.

For instance, we our DCs have Netflix, Amazon Prime and NOW (we don't subscribe to any of them, lucky us) and I much prefer Netflix.

Go on IMDB, find the sort of films you like and spend time looking for them on Netflix. For instance, I love courtroom dramas, IMDB did a big survey of the best courtroom drama films, there was about 20 and I found about 8 of them on Netflix, so have watched some brilliant films I love.

You have to spend time looking for what you want is what I'd say.

onegirlandherdog · 21/04/2020 07:42

I find good films by googling 'best films of 2019' or whatever, then checking the ratings against the audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Usually a pretty good guide.

Roussette · 21/04/2020 07:46

Agree Rotten Tomatoes is great... and I do think IMDB is pretty accurate in that I usually agree with their ratings.

astericia · 21/04/2020 07:48

I like the true crime type things.

When they see us is absolutely fantastic, incredibly moving, as is Making a murderer.

SharonasCorona · 21/04/2020 07:48

YANBU. Seems to be lots of 'made for TV' movies. They're just churning them out the moment.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 07:49

It isn’t great for films.

It’s much, much better for TV series.

LittleCabbage · 21/04/2020 07:50

I think it's quite shit for films. If we pick a classic film we'd like to watch as a family, it's never on there. E.g. E.T wasn't on there the other day. Had to rent it from YouTube.

kimlo · 21/04/2020 07:50

I only really have netflix for dd1, but every so often I find something I love. The last one was the haunting of hill house and now it's mindhunter.
