Is it just me, or is Netflix a bit shit?

I really struggle to find anything to watch.

I know it bases recommendations on viewing history, i blame you DP for your ropey taste in "action" films.

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm referring specifically to films rather than series although im not enamoured of its offerings. The tiger king can fuck right off for a start.

Any suggestions to save my lockdown sanity?

I like horror and drama but more spooky and atmospheric than mindless gore fest.

Quite like older films. Found Goodfellas the other week which was good.

The Glitch is good. Aussie TV series in a similar to the French services The Returned.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/04/2020 09:59

It has some good serialised crime stuff.

Manhunter, hunt for the Unabomber was great.
There was a Ted Bundy one which was good.

Abelino · 21/04/2020 10:00

It's probably already been mentioned but if not, Russian Doll is great - atmospheric, a bit spooky and funny.

Figgygal · 21/04/2020 10:01

No way I love Netflix yes the film is on massively up today but there are some really good ones on there

Amazon Prime video on the other hand is absolute garbage. Got it for the free months trial in December because they were suggesting they be broadcasting football but apart from the games they did in December they haven’t shown anything else.
Did watch Picard as love a bit of Star Trek but struggled other than that

TheoriginalLEM · 21/04/2020 10:18

Oooh I forgot i started this thread. Thanks for the reccomendations.

Tonight I'll watch haunting of hill house. Loved the book. Film, not so much but series....

Netflix can be a bit shit, but it's worth it if you invest the time to create a decent profile and add things to 'Your List' that you've previously watched and enjoyed, so that the algorithm can work its magic and make relevant suggestions for you.

I love it when people ask for these types of recommendations - I've spent 5 out of the last 12 months in hospital, so have watched (and have had recommended to me) hundreds of hours of Netflix! It's obviously hugely subjective, otherwise no one would have to ask because we’d all be watching the same thing, but hopefully you'll find a few gems in amongst all these replies - I've spotted a few I quite fancy giving a go myself!

I watched 'The Platform' recently, good if you fancy something a bit different – a completely original idea as far as I know and well made. Spanish, but dubbed.

'Kidnapping Stella' is really well done. German, with some decent acting.

'Isn't it Romantic' was a really fun movie, with a pretty original take (ironically!) on an old format. Light-hearted, starring Rebel Wilson.

I saw 'Marriage Story', which has great reviews and award nominations. I found it a little slow, but I suspect you need to be in the right 'mood' for it.

'Downsizing' is a good movie - the concept is fantastic, I felt they could have done more with it, but it's still a decent watch.

'Blackfish' is a documentary about killer whales in captivity; surprisingly watchable and a heap more interesting than expected.

A couple of other films I've enjoyed recently, while not available on Netflix, can be found on other websites; 'The Hunt' and the remake of 'The Invisible Man'.

Natascha Kampusch: The Whole Story is a dramatization of the real-life abduction of a 10 year old and her 8 year captivity.

I know you asked for films, but a couple of series if you fancied them: The 'Black Mirror' episodes are compulsive, incredibly dystopian and quite unnerving in places. I really enjoyed 'The Umbrella Academy', which is based on a comic about a family of superheroes. Not my usual thing, but thoroughly entertaining. The whole family enjoyed 'The Good Place' and my top recommendation at the moment is 'Money Heist'; bloody brilliant, another Spanish one. 'Orange is the New Black' is also an excellent watch (except the last season, which is kind of slow). Finally, if you haven't seen it; 'Breaking Bad' is my all-time favourite show, ever. Cannot recommend it enough!

There are also loads of documentaries available. Lots of prison stuff and some in-depth 'investigation'-type series ('Making A Murderer', 'The Staircase', 'The Trials of Gabriel Hernandez'). All (I think) of Louis Theroux's documentaries are available on there if you like his stuff.

Oh yeah 50-60% of Netflix is absolutely crap. But there are some absolute gems. I find it good for crappy tune off thy evening soppy drama.which I can snuggle up to

BulkyFlower · 21/04/2020 10:48

I prefer Prime, loads of films and series on there.

I like sci-fi, horror, action, mysteries.

I hate anything romcom, chick flick, etc. Bore me rigid.

On Netflix I loved Orphan Black, Fringe (been taken off) Sons of Anarchy is good.

There are a few good films on, BirdBox, Lockout, Terminator

RuffleCrow · 21/04/2020 10:53

For every quality show there's a lot of crap to wade through. However, when Netflix shows are good they're really good.

RuffleCrow · 21/04/2020 10:58

Yy @abelino - Russian Doll is the kind of excellent show I was referring to that couldn't really have been made anywhere else - Natasha Lyonne and the other writers have talked about the unique artistic freedom Netflix gave them to make it their way.

HotCrossBungle · 21/04/2020 11:00

Ozark
Unbelievable
Homecoming

Series though, not films. Second Mind Hunter.

GrouchyKiwi · 21/04/2020 11:02

@SharonasCorona Oh yes, they're completely formulaic and cheesy, but that's what I want from a RomCom.

Crystal87 · 21/04/2020 11:02

"Tully" with Charlize Theron in was a good film and had a weird twist at the end. I think the first two Insidious films are on there as well and they are creepy without being gory.

HotCrossBungle · 21/04/2020 11:08

My Cousin Rachel - film

blueheaven97 · 21/04/2020 12:13

@TheoriginalLEM Just so you know, the Haunting of Hill House series isn't remotely similar to the book. It doesn't even have a vaguely similar plot. It is really good though.

Kraejka · 21/04/2020 12:19

There's loads of great stuff on Netflix but you really have to search for it.
I've been finding that since lockdown I haven't been able to concentrate as well. I can't really watch series because my mind wanders. Sometimes I find the netflix series drag on too long - eg. a series might last 10 episodes when there's only really enough material for 5 or 6.
I've been looking for more films to watch and I think there's not as many good films as series but I've enjoyed Red Joan and I,Tonya this week. I've also started watching a couple of absolute shit films and given up.
I don't like the same type of films as OP so no point in me recommending them.

I'm now watching Doomsday Preppers for background noise and wondering whether these preppers have gone to their bug out locations because of Corona!

Snaketime · 21/04/2020 12:24

Scream is really good.
Haunting on Hill House is really good too.

Hingeandbracket · 21/04/2020 12:36

I really like Netflix. There's lots of decent content.

They do push stuff but they are nowhere like as fucking intrusive as the BBC - if I have to see or Peter Crouch and his shit podcast advertised on there one more fucking time.

Hingeandbracket · 21/04/2020 12:37

I enjoyed I Tonya this week too - but it is a hard watch for some of the domestic violence and her abusive upbringing.
