To think that a lot of people secretly resent the presence of "Chinese" people

DH, of Chinese ethnicity, was returning home from work one afternoon, walking through a once busy part of town. As he socially distanced past the only person in sight she began racially abusing him that people like him had brought the virus into the country Shock. He said that initially he was aghast before telling her to "fuck right off". She may not have expected such a retort as she hurried off without a response.
I do get the sense that there is unspoken hostility toward people of Chinese ethnicity here.

Some people, without a doubt. Some people are complete arseholes.

I would like to think it wasn’t ‘lots’ of people.

howrudeforme · 16/04/2020 14:04

Some, possibly. I don’t think it’s resentment as much to with their general loathing of anyone who doesn’t look or sound like them.

Just before the lockdown we

howrudeforme · 16/04/2020 14:04

Oops - people glaring at us in a restaurant for speaking another language.

starray · 16/04/2020 14:04

I like your DH's response

Mucklowe · 16/04/2020 14:05

I'm doing my PhD on the perceptions of Chinese people and culture in Western countries. Every time I tell anyone about this, they always hit me with some outdated and offensive stereotype about Chinese people. The racism is absolutely endemic.

artistformerlyknownas · 16/04/2020 14:05

I'm sorry that happened to your DH.

counciltaxquery · 16/04/2020 14:05

Perfect response!

Tonz · 16/04/2020 14:08

Some people are just ignorant. Love the response though

BillHadersNewWife · 16/04/2020 14:09

I've been horrified by DHS (he's not Chinese) accounts of men and only men saying racist comments to him about Chinese people. And as I type the weirdest thing....my phone suggests emojis for certain words and for Chinese it suggests this one 😂

outthedoor1 · 16/04/2020 14:09

Muck, I reckon that his response is not typical of how Chinese people are perceived and that may have surprised her. DH has absolutely no problem vociferously sticking up for himself Wink

People were racist before but will absolutely use corona virus to voice that racism. It's an extra stick to use.

Before corona Brexit had already emboldened such people. People who voted leave even for other reasons have a lot to answer for. It opened up a huge racist chasm between those who use their brain and those who don't.

Only from ill educated racist idiots OP and I agree also liked your DH's response.

FortunesFave · 16/04/2020 14:13

That was me commenting as BillHader I'm on a different device...and I can't sign in as Bill on my PC for some bloody reason.

So...Yes, does anyone think that's odd about the emoji thing? To expand, when I use my phone and type the word "Dinner" for example, it suggests the "yum-yum" emoji whatever it;s called.

Why would it suggest crying with laughter at "Chinese"??

I think the thing uses artificial intelligence and gathers the most commonly used emojis for certain words....and then suggests them.

So that suggests a LOT of people will be saying racist 'jokes' about Chinese people in texts.

Easilyanxious · 16/04/2020 14:14

Some people maybe but most I know don't .

BeNiceToYourSister · 16/04/2020 14:15

Sorry that happened to your DH, that’s awful (he was quite right with his response!) I do think this country is massively racist and that a lot of that is down to how “foreigners” are portrayed in the right-wing press. You don’t have to scratch very far beneath the surface to find a surprisingly high number of people have very ill-informed, bigoted views. Several people I’ve worked with, for example, have openly expressed hostility towards immigrants in front of me (even though I’m clearly mixed race, they genuinely don’t seem to think that voicing such views is remotely inappropriate). Sadly I agree that these attitudes are endemic.

araiwa · 16/04/2020 14:18

1 person equals lots? Confused

SpoonBlender · 16/04/2020 14:21

The virus plus the recent years of anti-immigrant Brexit propaganda, added together. People suck.

Soubriquet · 16/04/2020 14:22

Some people are idiots, some people are racists and some people are idiot racists

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 16/04/2020 14:24

YANBU. I witnessed horrific racism towards my Chinese ex BF years before covid 19. Racists are using it as an excuse for their vileness.

Oriental wtf? Rollercoaster??

Hadjab · 16/04/2020 14:32

There’s definitely an increase in hostility towards Chinese people. The amount of people I know who absolutely will not now eat Chinese food is ridiculous - as I keep having to explain, the likelihood of your local Chinese restauranteurs having been in Wuhan is minimal.

WakeAndBake · 16/04/2020 14:35

@BeNiceToYourSister

have openly expressed hostility towards immigrants in front of me (even though I’m clearly mixed race, they genuinely don’t seem to think that voicing such views is remotely inappropriate).

Does this then mean that the people expressing the hostility did not consider you as an immigrant despite your mixed race appearance? So it’s wasn’t a racial but more of a cultural thing?

And why should immigrants necessarily be in favour of ever more immigration? I am an immigrant, does this mean that I should think anyone from anywhere should be able to live everywhere?

Chiyo666 · 16/04/2020 14:36

It’s always been that way and will likely get worse. Go onto any corona thread talking about wet markets and see the way we are spoken about as a people.

SpoonBlender · 16/04/2020 14:36

We've been doing Chinese takeaway orders more this last month, since there's enough idiots that they'll be doing even worse than others under the current situation.

Our local has closed properly :( Very sad.
