To think that a lot of people secretly resent the presence of "Chinese" people

DH, of Chinese ethnicity, was returning home from work one afternoon, walking through a once busy part of town. As he socially distanced past the only person in sight she began racially abusing him that people like him had brought the virus into the country Shock. He said that initially he was aghast before telling her to "fuck right off". She may not have expected such a retort as she hurried off without a response.
I do get the sense that there is unspoken hostility toward people of Chinese ethnicity here.

Gosh @CurrentBun1981 it's almost like you're hanging out on this thread trying to provoke hatred of BAME groups...

roarfeckingroar · 18/04/2020 13:10

I've held deep reservations about the Chinese government and the horrific standards of treatment to humans, animals and the planet. I aim not to buy Chinese products where avoidable.

However this has zero to do with Chinese people and I doubt those shouting abuse give a crap about the nefarious government; they're just racists with a new bone.

chickenyhead · 18/04/2020 13:19

@CurrentBun1981

I think it's possible to dislike things about certain cultures (which would likely be called racism by many) but to still treat individuals on their own merits.

That is racism. You stereotype an entire culture, unless it is Bob up the road, because he doesn't count?

Unbelievable.

People from China have enough repression from their own government. Many live in abject poverty.

As a Country we don't do anything about it, because it suits us to distance ourselves
from the manufacturing process and resulting pollution and human rights atrocities committed in producing cheap goods.

If I were you I would stop embarrassing myself here.

Student133 · 18/04/2020 13:22

A few points,
There are people who seriously believe phone masts spread a virus, these are the same people who were burning witches a few hundred years ago, and will exist in all societies, given how intelligence in distributed.
In regards to your husband's very unpleasant experience, I would join him in telling them to fuck right off as its unlikely they contribute anything useful to society.

That being said, I sincerely hope that everyone, from government to citizen continue to lay the blame firmly at the door of the Chinese communist party, whose incompetence is comparable to that of the USSRS when it comes to creating a worldwide shutdown of human misery. Thanks to them, the globe has shut down, hundreds of millions are or will be unemployed, and many in the developing world will starve as they cannot work. This was caused by a government that has killed hundreds of millions of it's own people, and we should trust there is nothing it will not do to the rest of the world. If people thought the UK and US were unpleasant while the world power, you aren't wrong, but I we should take this as an opportunity to stand up to china (not the chinese people, the government) who is currently in the process of buying Africa.

Apologies for the crap grammar

Yes, it would. Because it is.

HTH.

Me and DP were discussing this this afternoon. Few weeks before the lockdown I remember someone posting on SM asking for the number for our local Chinese takeaway and there were a fair few comments calling her brave for eating chinese food or how they're now boycotting the chinese as they're unhygienic, how they'll never eat Chinese again 🤦‍♀️

Student133 · 18/04/2020 14:10

@KathyBriggs360
I hope you are joking, Islam is a religion, just like christianity, you can get muslims of all ethnicities, though one may be bigoted against muslims, you can't be racist against muslims, as it isnt a race.

GREATAUNT1 · 18/04/2020 14:18

The thing is OP she probably wouldn’t have said anything had there been people around to witness her stupid behavior. Bet she had such a shock.

We buy loads from China & will continue to do so, they’re cheaper than USA & that’s what worry’s Trump.

I won’t be eating Chinese take away as I never did before, but I’d be off to China in a heartbeat to sample whatever they had to offer.

We were in HK a few years back & asked directions to a music shop, we ended up with 4 different people taking us there. Even on our return journey we had people stopping & asking us if we’d found it.

Of course it isn't racist to criticise another country and their policies. This forum is full of criticism of Saudi, of the USA, of the English (by other cultures and nationalities). It is not racist to dislike your neighbour - what ever colour he or she is.

This virtue signalling disappeared for a while when people redirected their vitriol for Covididiots who "broke the rules". (Even to the extent of violence to those they "thought" had broken the rules - and being wrong.) That's boring now - so let's accuse everyone of being racist because no-one can ever possibly say they are NOT racist. The only defence is to accuse others. (The Crucible is very good on this)

Unless I agree - you will no doubt say I am racist - (although you nothing about me other than I won't acccuse others)

Wonder why i commented about being 'lectured by white women'. 🤔 Might it be because I'm actually not white myself...

it absolutely is racist to criticise Islam, what a disgusting person you are. I can't believe there is an actual Nazi on this forum, why is this person not banned?

Islam is a religion not a race. I'll bet you don't froth at the mouth when people criticise Christianity. I just don't understand why prominently white women are so quick to rush to the defence of a misogynistic and barbaric religion. I'd wager most of them have never seen a good friend pressured into quitting her degree and marrying a vile man she hates, with the consequence of being disowned should she refuse.

Apologies for going on a rant, but nothing annoys me more than seeing privileged women throwing others under the bus by defending the very institution that subjugates them. And all for a few woke points.

Veterinari · 19/04/2020 08:56

Oh why didn't you say so before? Well of course if you have an example of one single person then it's totally reasonable to generalise that across a vast religion covering millions of people of a vast array of nationalities and ethnicities...

Yeah that's certainly not the definition of bigotry Hmm

Wonder why i commented about being 'lectured by white women'. 🤔 Might it be because I'm actually not white myself...

But of course you assume that we all are. Oh and 'middle-class' too. It's the only way your dismissal of alternative opinions can work isn't it...

pokemongrief · 19/04/2020 10:45

I don't feel any animosity to any person from China, and it makes me sad a few ignorant people take this attitude.

I do feel angry with the government of China for allowing conditions to exist which precipitated a pandemic.

Kathy, who are you? I'm so fascinated. (sorry if this is not from Kathy, I have to connect up the dots between the deleted posts).

LolaSmiles
It's not hard to realise that having a negative interaction with one person doesn't mean anyone sharing the same quality needs a thread generalising about them.
The intention was to learn other people's views/experiences in the context of the virus.
Do you appreciate the hurt that DH experienced and the concerns that it raises for him and, judging from the thread, to other people about how they are perceived/treated in this world during and probably post Covid-19? Perhaps you should consider this before you question the "need' for the thread.

"I do feel angry with the government of China for allowing conditions to exist which precipitated a pandemic."

How about feeling angry at the British government who stood about with their hands on their dicks while the virus spread out over the world?
