To think that a lot of people secretly resent the presence of "Chinese" people

DH, of Chinese ethnicity, was returning home from work one afternoon, walking through a once busy part of town. As he socially distanced past the only person in sight she began racially abusing him that people like him had brought the virus into the country Shock. He said that initially he was aghast before telling her to "fuck right off". She may not have expected such a retort as she hurried off without a response.
I do get the sense that there is unspoken hostility toward people of Chinese ethnicity here.

OP posts:

And Chinese government and a certain lost generation from China are disgusting. You want to see open government sponsored racism in 2020? Look at how China treats black people this year.

ToffeeYoghurt · 17/04/2020 01:34

There's always been racists sadly. I'm sorry that happened to your husband OP. That's racism. Someone scared of catching Covid and avoiding Chinese restaurants isn't. Possibly over the top fear but not racist.

I think the UK government has been worse than China. We had plenty of warning yet failed to act. Nothing. No tests ordered, nor PPE, very slow to lockdown, flights kept coming from Wuhan (after the situation was clear), which was our decision, not China's. Yes the Chinese government covered up initially but it's not as if the UK government has been overly transparent. We massively downplayed it, Boris shaking hands being just one famous example.

I know plenty of Chinese people dislike the live animal markets. It's just like fox hunting here. Some support it and they don't represent all of us.

rainbowlou · 17/04/2020 02:24

I have recently had a horrible conversation with a family member that said she had been around ‘lots of Chinese and/or Vietnamese’ people and she is sure that why she had a sore throat soon after etc and more shit I didn’t listen to.
I’m disgusted and ashamed and don’t think I can bring myself to unblock her anytime soon, if ever.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/04/2020 02:34

YANBU
There is definitely hostility to anyone Chinese or who happens to be Asian (Chinese-looking-to-ignorant-eyes).
Even on MN there have been racist posts attacking the Chinese people.
It’s very prevalent.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 17/04/2020 02:49

Sadly OP, you're right .
It's always been there, but coronavirus has given these people what they feel is a 'legitimate' reason to air their racist views.
Sorry your DH had to experience this Sad

Leaannb · 17/04/2020 02:55

I am absolutely furious over the way the Asian Community in general has been treated in my community. Its been so bad there is no Asian Food to be found. No Chinese, No Japenese,No Korean,No Thai....Absolutely ridiculous

Klonda · 17/04/2020 02:56

Even on MN there have been racist posts attacking the Chinese people.
Yup, and not just one or two, there have been loads.

HQ have been good at dealing with them though.

sobeyondthehills · 17/04/2020 03:00

I find that the Human Race needs to blame someone for something, sometimes its Jewish People, Other time Irish, Muslim most recently, now we have the Chinese.

It could be some of the political groups I follow (local ones in my area) but its been interesting to see how their mindset has shifted recently.

Having said that, I am one of those people who have been trying to limit their amount of stuff being bought from China, for the last 2 years and I can say its a lot more difficult than it seems and for us personally we are going to get no where near being able to limit it as much as I want

xsquared · 17/04/2020 22:43

OP I very rarely experience racist incidents but after news of the Coronavirus came out, I have had teenage boys making Coronavirus jokes at me and just last week a grown man of about 20+ muttered "Fucking Chinese" under his breath. I don't think he expected me to retort so quickly or understand what he said after I said loudly and clearly "Don't be racist" because he just looked at me with no response and walked away, but looked back after a few steps with the same expression.

It's really unpleasant and I'm glad that the dcs haven't had any of this, perhaps owing to their mixed race, so they don't really look Chinese.

Unfortunately, there is always going to be a handful of stupid racist idiots out there who think Covid has given them a legitimate reason to racially abuse anyone who looks Chinese, but it's good that your dh was quick enough to shut her down. We just have to keep challenging them.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/04/2020 22:50

Yes I think it has given existing racists ammunition to attack another group- appalling.

It’s also good to read the attacks black people are enduring in China at the moment
www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-04-16/china-coronavirus-black-african-evictions
Every nation is looking to blame someone else!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/04/2020 22:50

I mean good to read and educate, not good to see!

INeverSaidImNice · 18/04/2020 00:00

The CCP is as bad as the Nazis. What country thinks starting a concentration camp is ok in these modern days? What country thinks running over human being and making people disappear is ok? What I hate about every Chinese mainlander I have met is talking to them is like talking to arrogant brainwashed robots. You can't criticize their government without them feeling butt hurt. And the arrogance. Dont even get me started.

xsquared · 18/04/2020 00:21

But this isn't about the CCP @INeverSaidImNice. I am not a fan of them myself but that is a separate thread. You can be against the CCP without discriminating against and being racially abusive to Chinese people as individuals surely?

The thread is about a noticeable increase, at least in my experience, in Chinese looking people being racially abused in public. A colleague's daughter was punched and verbally abused in a night club weeks ago before lockdown and she's not even Asian!

And just how do you know who's from mainland and who isn't? There are some who are clearly brainwashed by the CCP and have disturbing views, but are you also the type of person who would abuse someone you didn't know in the street minding their own business?

I think OP has proved her point.

INeverSaidImNice · 18/04/2020 01:04

I can tell because I'm Asian. I speak Chinese too.

I am Asian too, and I speak Cantonese but that doesn't necessarily mean I can tell apart a mainlander from a non mainlander Chinese in the street with total certainty, especially if they haven't said anything yet.

Even so, do you think all mainlanders are pro CCP?

I think you can still be anti CCP a and civil to Chinese people as individuals ,or will we have to agree to disagree?

Desiringonlychild · 18/04/2020 01:22

@CallMeRachel you do know that most wet markets do not sell wildlife right? Wet markets in china, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore often sell boring chicken, pork and seafood. Unlike in the west, supermarkets are a luxury and most people (esp the low income) get their fresh food from the wet market. Westerners saying that wet markets should be banned without knowing what wet market means just makes me want to smack my forehead in exasperation.

But yeah OP your point was proven. I am Singaporean and have encountered a lot of racism. I live in London. Never been to Wuhan, my great grandfather left China 100 years ago. I speak fluent Chinese though.

Desiringonlychild · 18/04/2020 01:41

Also pre Corona, every single racist verbal attack on me always had sexual overtures. In fact in the past, I was never sure whether it was racist or whether it was sexual harassment- maybe if I was blonde, it would be ' hey baby with the blonde hair'. But now there are only references to coronavirus. In the past, I always thought these men watched too much asian themed porn or something. Now I know they are just racist idiots.

Millicent10 · 18/04/2020 01:47

A crisis brings out the worst in some people and there has been more open racism since Brexit and now coronavirus. I have heard comments recently that can be construed as racist (about Chinese mask wearers and Chinese people stockpiling).

KathyBriggs360 · 18/04/2020 01:49

What do you expect, British people are the most racist people on the face of the earth. Look where slavery came from.

chickenyhead · 18/04/2020 03:22

I wish that I had travelled so extensively to be able to conclude that British people are the most racist in all of the known world. I bow down to your vast personal experience of every sector of Britain. You are truly uniquely placed to make such statements.

But in the real world, there is racism in every society on earth. That does not make it acceptable or excusable.

In countries with authoritarian governments, those who lack critical thinking blindly follow the government. A side effect of living in a democracy, is that those people are easily manipulated by conspiracy theorists, racists and/or other figures with hidden agendas.

The British, are made up of several countries and several classes, not all of which have been treated equally or acted similarly. Anyone who groups every person of a certain nationality together in a Derogatory derogatory manner is unfairly discriminating on the basis of race.

Although many many British people have ancestry from all over the world. How many generations do you believe a person has to have been in Britain to be British? How do you identify those people from other British people?

Ridiculous, ill educated and frankly racist comment.

Shinesweetfreedom · 18/04/2020 03:34

I have no problem with anyone Chinese.
I have a big problem with Wet Markets and cat and dog eating and the dog eating festival that goes on in China every year

KathyBriggs360 · 18/04/2020 03:40

It's not racist at all chicken head, I am a quarter Spanish and whenever I told anybody they would ask me if I needed a pillow to lie down in the afternoon. So please don't tell me, a minority, what my experience is in this country. I know what it is like to be mocked for my heritage and it is not nice.
