To think that a lot of people secretly resent the presence of "Chinese" people

DH, of Chinese ethnicity, was returning home from work one afternoon, walking through a once busy part of town. As he socially distanced past the only person in sight she began racially abusing him that people like him had brought the virus into the country Shock. He said that initially he was aghast before telling her to "fuck right off". She may not have expected such a retort as she hurried off without a response.
I do get the sense that there is unspoken hostility toward people of Chinese ethnicity here.

Or not offensive but annoying.

StCharlotte · 18/04/2020 09:56

The amount of people I know who absolutely will not now eat Chinese food is ridiculous

That is ridiculous.

Our local Chinese takeaway is closed and I'm so desperate I'm thinking of breaking in!

forsucksfake · 18/04/2020 09:58

@YesThatIsMyRealName

But having lived in SK and driven past a dog restaurant every single day on my commute (with dogs tied up out front, so depressing), dog consumption is a fact of life in SK. Why is it an unfair question?

YesThatIsMyRealName · 18/04/2020 10:11

@forsucksfake Because it is a stereotype for one thing.

Because the number of people protesting dog consumption is far higher than the number of people eating it?

It's like asking a Brit if they go fox hunting because you saw a fox hunt every Saturday when you lived in Surrey.

Don't paint everyone with the same brush. It's fucking rude.

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 10:12

Racist is racist is racist. I am not one of those idiots who think only certain people can be racist. So yeah, I judge you for befriending people who hold racist opinions no matter how steeped they are in historical oppression.

Yawn. You might feel differently if you'd experienced some of that historical oppression yourself ya know. I don't give a shit if my Muslim and Sikh mates don't get on, and I'm not going to start sticking my nose in and virtue signalling over things I don't really understand - it's a bit different from Nobby the skinhead who didn't like any forriners.

It amazes me how many people will happily condemn strangers whose political affiliations don't match their own (e.g. Labour vs Tory) but are happy to virtue signal and lecture others for acting the same way as a result of potentially similar political/social/religious differences which run much deeper than Brexit and are highly unlikely to be understood fully by the complainant.

forsucksfake · 18/04/2020 10:17

You might feel differently if you'd experienced some of that historical oppression yourself ya know.

Oh the assumptions you are making about me. You have NO idea.

Keep yawning.

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 10:21

Well, I don't know anything about you but I sure know that white Brits (and Americans tbf) just love getting all offended on behalf of other ethnicities. It's almost like a Walter Mitty situation where they have to make up for what they've not experienced themselves.

forsucksfake · 18/04/2020 10:25

It's like asking a Brit if they go fox hunting because you saw a fox hunt every Saturday when you lived in Surrey.

How is that offensive? I would simply answer that I don't. Maybe my time in East Asia has dulled my sensitivity. I was asked all kinds of questions South Koreans every single day based on their (limited) experiences with people from my background and I just answered them honestly.

Discrimination in terms of housing and employment - rife in my SK experience - now that is something to get upset about.

But we will agree to disagree, I suspect.

ginghamstarfish · 18/04/2020 10:25

The Chinese state does have a lot to answer for, virus related in particular, the cover ups, the lying which will cost potentially millions of lives, the selling to the UK of faulty CV tests (having insisted on payment upfront with no comeback), the way they are treating African nationals, the complete lack of animal welfare, etc etc. However it is of course not the fault of the average citizen, but idiots will be idiots.

YogaFaker · 18/04/2020 10:40

I do get the sense that there is unspoken hostility toward people of Chinese ethnicity here

Yes.

My Chinese university students have found this. Ignorant people telling them to "speak English" and blaming them for the virus. The everyday low-level racism is awful.

Veterinari · 18/04/2020 10:46

I'm not going to start sticking my nose in and virtue signalling over things I don't really understand - it's a bit different from Nobby the skinhead who didn't like any forriners.

@CurrentBun1981 genuinely - how is your friend who is openly racist against black and Chinese people any different from any other racist?

It's pretty clear you don't understand very much if you think challenging bigotry and ignorance is 'virtue signalling' rather than basic human decency. Or do you believe that bigotry is only a problem if it's directed against you?

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 10:52

how is your friend who is openly racist against black and Chinese people any different from any other racist?

I didn't say she was, which was why I mentioned her as the worst. I was talking about the history between Muslims/Sikhs which is a well documented cause of hostility - not necessarily ok but a lot more ingrained and deep seated.

LolaDarkdestroyer · 18/04/2020 11:07

It's just how it goes...terror attack...blame all Muslims...corona blame all Chinese, it's up to people if they don't eat Chinese again and I can see why people are put off at the moment. I think yes a lot of Chinese people are wrong for eating dog cat bat etc I watched that idiot abroad and a bloke on a Chinese market ate a fucking chicken fetous out of the egg fucking sadistic.
But I wouldn't go around blaming all Chinese people and being racist! Glad your dh doesn't take it to heart.

Veterinari · 18/04/2020 11:17

If you're talking about discord between religious groups you're talking about sectarianism not racism.
To be honest @CurrentBun1981, you don't seem very bright, and as you hang out with racists and don't see a problem with that and consider people who speak out against bigotry as 'virtue signalling' I'm not sure it's even worth engaging with you or what you're trying to achieve by posting your 'amusing' racist anecdotes here...

YesThatIsMyRealName · 18/04/2020 11:26

@forsucksfake Because I assume it's not the first question people ask EVERY TIME they meet you.

Would you ask a black person if they eat watermelon? Or an Irish person if they eat potatoes? Or would you find those things rather gauche? I know I would.

Sure if you've known someone some time, it might come up. As the first question? Since you lived in Korea, I assume you understand the phrase 눈치없다, because that's exactly what it would be.

Yes, the Koreans can be rather naive in their questions to foreigners. It can be infuriating. Given that even in my husband's lifetime, people couldn't travel abroad easily, it's hardly surprising they don't have the same level of experience as those of us from the west. That doesn't mean that those of us from a multicultural society should be the same.

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 11:35

If you're talking about discord between religious groups you're talking about sectarianism not racism.

And you don't think the two are intertwined?

consider people who speak out against bigotry as 'virtue signalling' I'm not sure it's even worth engaging with you

It's probably not tbh. I'm not going to be lectured on racism by white middle class women which is the majority of mumsnet. 😂 I don't believe in the sins of the fathers and all that but most white Britons have experienced fuck all genuine racism in their lives.

I just can't get wound up about my Thai mate occasionally complaining about 'unhygienic' Chinese people in her restaurant. It's not her best trait but I'm much more annoyed by permanently negative people, preachy people, the self-obsessed, etc etc. I'm not even convinced that most people in this country are actually less bigoted - they've just had it drilled into them to act PC in public.

forsucksfake · 18/04/2020 11:39

@YesThatIsMyRealName

Notice that you characterise Koreans as "naive" and non-Koreans as "fucking rude" when they ask questions based on stereotypes and limited experience with the other group. Why are you holding one group to a higher standard? Many non-Korean people are as unfamiliar with Koreans as the latter are with non-Koreans.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 18/04/2020 11:42

@forsucksfake If you can't see a difference between people who've grown up in a multicultural country and people who have not, then anything I say is not going to enlighten you.

KenDodd · 18/04/2020 11:43

Yanbu op.

We're allowed to be racist in the UK now, our PM has lead the way.

Billben · 18/04/2020 11:46

KathyBriggs360

I noticed that the person 2 doors down from me on my street didn't come out on either occasions to clap. Odd because I know she still lives there and I see her walking her dog pretty much every day. I'll be checking again tonight and if I don't see her I think I'll be having a word, there's no excuse for not showing up 3 times in a row

I’m a carer and I don’t clap for anybody. You’d have your arse handed to you if you ever knocked on my door with your bullhshit, I’m telling ya 😂
Jesus, you need to be taken off your high horse. I mean who the fuck you think you are at the end of the day 😂

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 11:55

I can't be fucked with clapping either. I'm making less than £100 extra a month by working 10-12 hour days due to our shift allowance being temporarily suspended alongside our bonus - I turned down furlough which would've been full 80% with my company making up the difference over and above the gov cap.

Once I've paid for petrol I'm effectively working for free atm so that's my contribution.

Shinesweetfreedom · 18/04/2020 11:57

@Soontobe60
What being concerned about animal rights in another country makes one inherently racist.
Don’t talk absolute bollocks.
I’ve heard some crazy uses of the term racist but that takes the biscuit.

shinyredbus · 18/04/2020 11:58

Of course. You’ll get people who hate the Chinese, people who hate Europeans, people that hate Africans. Racists are everywhere but thankfully there aren’t that many of them.

forsucksfake · 18/04/2020 12:02

@YesThatIsMyRealName I addressed that, explaining that non-Koreans can be unfamiliar with a Koreans. As multi-cultural as any Western country is, many people still socialise within their ethnic group. Koreatown exists for a reason. You stated that you might be more comfortable there for the sake of your husband and children. Your bias toward Koreans is evident.

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 12:03

I think it's possible to dislike things about certain cultures (which would likely be called racism by many) but to still treat individuals on their own merits.

I'm still amazed how many people think it's racist to say you don't like Islam, for example.
