Queens speech

Am I the only one who actually couldn’t give a shiny shit what she has to say at this time.

People are dying , everyone is affected so the last thing we need is a rich old woman sitting in her ivory castle asking us to stay calm.

It’s really wound me up, it’s constantly being mentioned on the news!

I have parents in their mid-80s who won’t care what the Queen has to say. They may watch, but will then be making the same comments as those in this thread, my mum in particular.

Mimishimi · 05/04/2020 06:52

They ,or rather their proxies, have killed millions and now they are telling us to stay calm whilst potentially millions more die and their Nazi mates over at Ford, IBM etc can rake in huge profits again making ventilators and the like.

They are Germans anyway. I have more blood of Isles in the fingertip of my little pinky than they have.

grandadamo · 05/04/2020 07:02

The queen should do a speech. Lots of people expect it and find it comforting.
However, the BBC should not leak the contents in advance. They do the same thing every year with the Xmas speech and it completely undermines the process. Why bother watching it if you already know what it will say?

InThisMultiverse · 05/04/2020 07:06

I will likely watch the PR exercise for what it is. I have a lot of respect for the queen, a 93 year old still working and serving her country. I’m not sure how many people would swap her palaces and money for effectively not having autonomy over your own life from birth. Also, I expect she has crapped herself about getting CV and dying immediately. She is not immune despite her white brushed cotton gloves. That said, I would be content if the monarchy died with her.

The British Royal Family? Nazi mates? What are you on?

They are Germans anyway. I have more blood of Isles in the fingertip of my little pinky than they have.

Well the Queen’s mother was Scottish and her father was a big old mixture of German/English/Danish descent. So she is more British than German.

Prince Philip, while a former Prince of Greece, was from a family of mostly Danes and Russians.

Then all of their children married Brits. Most dynastically relevant of those marriages was Charles and Diana, making Prince William of majority British descent. He in turn married the very English Kate making George, Charlotte and Louis overwhelmingly English.

So the tired old “they’re all Germans” trope is wrong and getting progressively wronger. But any particular reason for the racism anyway?

Lynda07 · 05/04/2020 07:11

Imfinallyhappy(Imgladaboutthat).
You don't have to watch it, you can ignore. I probably won't watch at the time it is broadcast but may look at it later.

C-virusis is no discriminator of persons, rich or poor. Many people will be glad the queen has said something, others won't care and a few, bitter and nasty, people will decry it.

Personally I am glad, the poor woman who has had her share of pain , does the best she can in the confines of what she knows. Just accept or don't bother to watch or read, simple.

Exoffice · 05/04/2020 07:11

It will be full of platitudes and nothing else.

They should come down from their ivory towers and do something too. So many people volunteered. Why are e.g. Kate and Wills not doing any volunteer work instead of hiding.

They all just flogged to their country residences, dragged the virus out further and do fuck all.

If this is all they have to offer, then we can do frankly pretty well without them.

Exoffice · 05/04/2020 07:12

and serving her country

how exactly is she serving the country? Confused

vanillandhoney · 05/04/2020 07:14

It's just patronising. Both DH and I lost our incomes overnight - I don't need someone sitting in a castle telling me to "keep calm and carry on" Hmm

sjk17 · 05/04/2020 07:17

I generally don’t give a shit. But there’s a significant demographic in the cold beating blue heart of middle England who’ll listen to her.

ThisFineMap · 05/04/2020 07:28

It's patronising and out of touch. After the ridiculous media scandals (Andrew, Harry) the royal family's way of life seems more absurd than ever. The public have had to cope with lockdown, there are many people out there who do an absolutely amazing job (teachers, health care workers, retail staff, delivery people) at the risk of catching Covid. The Queen and her family sit in their ivory towers and are irrelevant to our experience.

Prince Charles has already made a public speech, that should be enough. That said, his speech came across as alright to be fair.

welldonejean · 05/04/2020 07:46

Nope, I do t give a monkeys! All this has shown how pointless the royals actually are.
I give the Queen a bit of respect for the number of years she’s out in, it after she goes we need to get rid of the lot of them so they’re purely ceremonial and cut way back.

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 07:49

I do give a shit. Given that the elderly are the most vulnerable and, unlike most of the elderly, she's actually been through this sort of shit before, it is important that she speaks. Unless you are in your late 80s you won't have been an adult in WWII, you will be the post war generation. She actually served in the war.
And she's head of state so yes, what she says is important. If overdue.

cactus2020 · 05/04/2020 07:52

Little relevance to most of us, and an irritating reminder about where millions are going that could be spent on NHS/education/ etc. Don't get me started. But plenty of royalists will find it cheering just as they enjoy events like royal weddings. Whereas they just remind me what a waste of money this lot are... Never the twain I guess.

Lynda07 · 05/04/2020 07:55

ThisFineMap, Prince Harry hasn't been involved in any scandals.

People, find other outlets for your outrage.

Selfsettling3 · 05/04/2020 07:55

It’s doesn’t interest me but if it brings comfort to some and encourages some people of a certain age to follow to rules them it’s a good thing.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/04/2020 07:57

The fact that it's been recorded and widely leaked has ruined it.

A live broadcast with no hint what she was going to say in advance would draw an audience of over 50 million.

YeahWhatevver · 05/04/2020 08:01

🤣

Queens speech
BurneyFanny · 05/04/2020 08:03

Prince Harry hasn't been involved in any scandals.

Does dressing as a Nazi for thé lolz not count as a scandal any more then?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/04/2020 08:04

"Queens Speech Bingo"

She will surely work the Commonwealth in somewhere.

Burplecutter · 05/04/2020 08:05

I wish newsreaders would stop trying to be "me first me first me first" and let the queen be bloody first. I don't want to hear what she's saying or have it all described before it on TV. Selfish of journalism to take that away from the queen and anyone who wants to watch it.

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 08:07

Don't watch or, in the alternative, play YeahWhatevver's bingo.
But try and accept that given that the over 70s are especially vulnerable, and they (not my in laws but most of them) will respond positively to it, it's not all about you.

Xiaoxiong · 05/04/2020 08:07

I agree with bellini, it does matter that she is saying something. Be careful what you wish for, you really don't want to politicise the head of state - my other head of state is Donald Trump Sad

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 08:11

Exactly @Xiaoxiong , we have a non-exec head of state who, at this point, happens to be a 90 year old woman. It's not who you'd like it to be, or what system of government you'd prefer, it's who we have now.

LaurieMarlow · 05/04/2020 08:11

Will the gold piano be in evidence this time I wonder?
