Queens speech

Am I the only one who actually couldn’t give a shiny shit what she has to say at this time.

People are dying , everyone is affected so the last thing we need is a rich old woman sitting in her ivory castle asking us to stay calm.

It’s really wound me up, it’s constantly being mentioned on the news!

For some of the generation that grew up with the concept of being in awe of the monarchy and looked to them for guidance and inspiration, it will still have meaning.

As time passes though attitudes to and beliefs about class and society have changed and we don’t worship the royals on the basis they are no different to us. They are by accident of birth unimaginably wealthy, privileged and indulged. Most of us can’t relate to them and don’t welcome being given pep talks by them when we are up against the wall and having to muddle on through somehow while negotiating problems the royals couldn’t possibly relate to.

borntobequiet · 05/04/2020 08:15

I like the concept of an ivory castle.

audreysview · 05/04/2020 08:19

Only the brain washed gullible sheep would take comfort from what this greedy grasping old woman has to say from her ivory tower. We aren’t in this together, the queen like the rest of her family never do anything constructive in bad times , like donating a chunk of their huge fortune, they just read words from a script written by someone else.

I won’t be watching. I fail to see what possible comfort I’d grt from someone who doesn’t give a fuck about ANYTHING but the preservation of the monarchy, and hasn’t a clue what the reality is for millions of people worldwide.

And her fuck you attitude to the world over her darling son Andrew gives us a glimpse into what this woman is really like.

People saying she’s damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t are right. We don’t want either. But maybe she wouldn’t be so damned if she made a massive donation to help fight this pandemic. She’s took enough from the public purse in her reign, time to give some back. Talk is cheap.

Doobigetta · 05/04/2020 08:20

“We are all in this together and must take the rules seriously. My family and I have been absolutely strict about not setting a single foot outside our own fifty thousand acre estates, unless it has been necessary to travel to one of our other fifty thousand acre estates. One is absolutely disappointed that one’s subjects have not remained inside their little, what do call them, flets

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 08:23

Brain washed gullible sheep and superior right thinking individuals can get this virus.

Ponoka7 · 05/04/2020 08:24

"She only did it because people were questioning why Charles addressed the nation last week and not her ....another meaningless tick box exercise"

I don't know why they are questioning that, it was stated last year that moves for Charles and William were being planned, so they are eased into their roles.

It's been said that if we end lock down and people are forced to work, that should include our Monarch. So either the Queen risks her health along with her subjects, or she hands over to Charles. So we could now see that happening.

When Harry wanted out, it was said that it didn't matter because he was sixth in line. Well this virus could change all that. We've got at least 15 years before George could take over. They've got a lot of work to do to keep relevant.

I like and want a Royal family. The Queen did make a statement at soon as lock down started and i think it was right that she wasn't filmed at that point. London was badly hit by CV and it would have been wrong to test her Staff and the crew, just so she could address the Commonwealth, at a time when doctors couldn't get tests.
She deserves along with all 90+ year olds to shield.

VaukaPinhvin · 05/04/2020 08:25

Doobigetta yes as a dweller of a particularly decrepit little ‘flet’ just a few steps over a narrow road from a ruddy great construction site and one floor above the loudest woman on the planet with a penchant for 6.30 am phone calls, I’m in no mood to hear any spiel from someone living in one of her selection of castles.

Sertchgi123 · 05/04/2020 08:26

Agreed!

Scarlettpixie · 05/04/2020 08:28

I just wish they wouldn’t spend the day before telling you what she is going to say. I turned it off so I can listen to her say it and not Nicolas or Fiona!

I think a lot of people want to hear from the queen.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 05/04/2020 08:28

For some of the generation that grew up with the concept of being in awe of the monarchy and looked to them for guidance and inspiration, it will still have meaning.

Absolutely this. My Dad is almost 80 and for him, the monarchy represents something vital to him. Not so much the wider royal family - my Dad messaged when Andrew shit himself on national tv in that interview and announced he should have been shot - but the Queen is still a fundamental part of being British for him.

I think younger generations are cynical and less awed by them, and as a result this is probably the beginning of the end for them all - once QE passes away I think the monarchy should be allowed to die with her. It won't; they'll fight for their entitlement and privilege to the death, but bowing out quietly and gracefully could resolve this.

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/04/2020 08:30

We aren’t in this together. I was told to isolate after coming into contact with someone with Corona (with a newborn and my DH) while she and her family got tested.

beautifulteeth · 05/04/2020 08:30

Does there need to be an another anti monarchy thread.

Only on mumsnet.

Totally pointless

Don't watch it then but I guarantee millions will.

audreysview · 05/04/2020 08:31

Isn’t Harry still taking from the taxpayer (through his father) even though he doesn’t still live in the U.K, also still getting his security costs paid. That’s a bloody scandal if you ask me.

jasjas1973 · 05/04/2020 08:31

Brain washed gullible sheep and superior right wing thinking individuals can get this virus

Lol! Yeah one section of society will be left to die alone at home and another will be given state of the art medical care.

Of course if your food is prepared to the highest standards and you never have to step into an Asda or take exercise in among the masses, your risk factor is very much reduced.

Sooner these bunch of parasites are consigned to the bin of history, the better.

Quirrelsotherface · 05/04/2020 08:33

Don't watch then, simple. I'm looking forward to it, she and her generation could teach the numpties of this country a thing or two about resolve and resilience. You only need to look at the footage of people out in parks, beaches to see how many snowflakes we have around us these days. Sadly these thicko's probably won't be watching the speech.

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 08:33

Sooner these bunch of parasites are consigned to the bin of history, the better.

Do you ever stop to wonder why none of your political wishes come true? No, probably not Wink

audreysview · 05/04/2020 08:33

Don't watch it then but I guarantee millions will.

Course they will, people are climbing the walls with boredom. I highly doubt many would take comfort though, I think a lot of people will be repelled.

LaurieMarlow · 05/04/2020 08:33

Will she address how her family members all fucked off to their second homes (including one actually diagnosed) when the rest of us were told not to do that?

Quirrelsotherface · 05/04/2020 08:34

And didn't Prince Charles have the virus?!

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 08:34

If it keeps you busy stewing about the monarchy, go ahead. She serves a purpose for people who like her And people who don't.

Boomerwang · 05/04/2020 08:35

I think the point is to lift national spirits and to get everyone together as one to fight towards a common goal. I would see that as an empowering moment, just as I'm sure many did throughout previous crises in the UK. Like it or not, the Queen is in the hearts of the very many both in the UK and abroad.

I don't understand people referencing the safety measures taken. It's almost as though they WANT the Queen to become ill and die from a terrible virus? She's 93 years old. Would you tell your 93 year old neighbour to expose herself to the virus in the name of solidarity?

I'm sure some people are going stir crazy and don't mean to sound so aggressive, but I'm still surprised at the vitriol towards the at least harmless, at most helpful gesture from the Queen, who still has the final say over any recommended suggestions from others.

Icare1234 · 05/04/2020 08:35

I’m not bothered either way. I’m a republican but I just can’t get all this vitriol. Don’t watch, let those who find comfort find it.

Plenty of time after the pandemic to argue and campaign to change the system. Meanwhile the head of state addressing the nation in a time of crisis isn’t a dreadful thing.

rookiemere · 05/04/2020 08:37

I'm no royalist, but I think it's the right thing - depending on what she says. What she should do is thank everyone for what they are doing and offer some words of encouragement- what I'd really like to hear is some actual money being offered to the NHS or to clinical research, but that's just pie in the sky.

I don't particularly want to hear about Charles having been infected- pretty sure our household in Scotland have had it as well but as we can't fly on a jet then queue jump to get a test and aren't personally rich enough to go private we shan't know for a while. And as for him "opening " the new hospital remotely, talk about a misfire. Royal Family needs to understand that they have it easier than the rest of us, so no moaning about their personal situation.

I have to admit to a certain grudging admiration for Boris Johnson. He's been out there even when clearly unwell clapping for NHS ( which is a hollow gesture but at least he's doing it) and whilst we may disagree about their approach, the daily briefings are appropriate in content and approach to actually address the nation.

LaurieMarlow · 05/04/2020 08:37

she and her generation could teach the numpties of this country a thing or two about resolve and resilience.

Oh yes. Think about how difficult lockdown must be in a massive estate like Windsor castle with an army of staff to look after you.

I’m sure families with small children, trapped in flats, terrified about paying the bills can learn so much from her experience.

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 08:37

It's the job of the head of state to address the nation. Could be worse, could be Trump.
Here's another head of state doing it:
