Queens speech

Am I the only one who actually couldn’t give a shiny shit what she has to say at this time.

People are dying , everyone is affected so the last thing we need is a rich old woman sitting in her ivory castle asking us to stay calm.

It’s really wound me up, it’s constantly being mentioned on the news!

Totally agree. Especially if she's going to do the whole stay at home thing, her own son didn't follow, jumped on his flight up to Scotland after the non essential travel guidance came in Confused

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/04/2020 08:38

It's actually a sandstone tower she's in at Windsor.

BubblesBuddy · 05/04/2020 08:39

If older people value a message from The Queen, then so be it. It’s mostly old people who are dying and if it resonates with them then I don’t see why posters are so angry. It’s not about you or your needs, it’s about others who do value what she has to say. At the moment we should just accept that some people will appreciate this and, if that helps them, it’s fine by me.

KonTikki · 05/04/2020 08:39

Audrey
Why insult anyone who derives pleasure from watching it.
It's a free country.
Personally I probably won't bother watching it, but as Head of State this is exactly what she should do.

Quirrelsotherface · 05/04/2020 08:39

*Oh yes. Think about how difficult lockdown must be in a massive estate like Windsor castle with an army of staff to look after you.

I’m sure families with small children, trapped in flats, terrified about paying the bills can learn so much from her experience*

Not her personal experience but she has seen it all, from near and far. Her whole generation are an example in resolve. Look at us and how we've coped.. panicking, buying up all the stuff, not giving a shiny shit about anyone else. God help us if we'd had to live through an actual war.

LaurieMarlow · 05/04/2020 08:40

Could be worse, could be Trump.

And the royalists continue to trot out the worlds laziest argument.

audreysview · 05/04/2020 08:41

Brain washed gullible sheep and superior right thinking individuals can get this virus.

True, but the brainwashed ones won’t get the ventilator ahead of the privileged ones. A 92 year old woman would take precedence over a young previously fit adult. Nothing superior about hating injustice.

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 08:42

Simplistic tosh @audreysview , but if it makes you happy to think it 🤷‍♀️

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 08:42

And the royalists continue to trot out the worlds laziest argument.

Why would I waste my time arguing against a small minority of the population? You’d have a better chance of getting Jeremy Corbyn elected PM than taking down the monarchy Grin

LaurieMarlow · 05/04/2020 08:48

You’d have a better chance of getting Jeremy Corbyn elected PM than taking down the monarchy

It’s not even my problem anymore as I live in ROI (thankfully). But I’ll never understand the delusion of those happy to be subjects. And I’ll point out the hypocrisy of the royals whenever I please.

audreysview · 05/04/2020 08:53

Kontiki But it isn’t “exactly what she should have done”, she should have done it a lot sooner, not reluctantly under pressure, and rather than saying I’m insulting people who take pleasure from hearing the queen.....it’s the royal family who are insulting us all with their lack of any positivity. They’re sitting on billions, with umpteen palaces and castles. Donate some big money and offer up the use of some of their homes whilst this pandemic continues. Yes really!

I’d take comfort from seeing all those dedicated doctors and nurses battling this crisis, without the basic equipment, not some pampered old lady safely tucked away from reality in her ivory castle coming out with meaningless twaddle.

LakieLady · 05/04/2020 08:53

I think the point is to lift national spirits and to get everyone together as one to fight towards a common goal

I've no doubt that that's the point, but that just highlights for me how utterly out of touch they are.

For them all to fuck off to their country homes, at a time when everyone has been told to stay put, was a clear demonstration that we are not all in it together. And it's bloody easy to stay put on a country estate when you have an army of flunkies catering to your every need.

None of them are ever going to have to worry about how they're going to wipe their royal arses if they can't get any bog roll, or what the fuck they're going to do when they're symptomatic but need to get to the shop to top up their leccy card. None of them have had to face losing all their income overnight, being unable to pay their rent, or struggled to keep the kids entertained in a small "flet", while trying to do their job from a laptop perched on their knees. And none of them are wondering if the cough they've got is Covid-19, because there are tests available if you're rich enough, which they are.

I might be less jaundiced if the younger members of the family were packing food parcels for those who need them, dropping off shopping and picking up medication for those who can't get out, or doing something useful. At least that would be sending a bit of a message that we are all in this together.

The Queen is a grafter, for sure, and to still be "working" at 94 is remarkable. But please, let her be the last. Let's be a proper, modern republic after she goes.

I want to be citizen, not a subject.

BubblesBuddy · 05/04/2020 08:55

I really do not understand why posters get so wound up about a speech they are not going to watch. Let others watch and keep quiet. Please?

audreysview · 05/04/2020 08:56

Simplistic tosh @audreysview , but if it makes you happy to think it

Yeah the simple truth often hurts doesn’t it.

BurneyFanny · 05/04/2020 08:56

Do you ever stop to wonder why none of your political wishes come true? No, probably not

Mine did. I live in France Grin

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 08:57

And I’ll point out the hypocrisy of the royals whenever I please.

And I’ll point out how pointlessly you’re wasting your time whenever I please. Which is quite often Smile

Now why don’t you go back to enjoying your own head of state, who has maybe 1% of ERII’s global clout, if he’s lucky...

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 08:57

If you knew anything about elder care and the potential horror of resuscitating someone of that age, you wouldn't speak so glibly.

Aragog · 05/04/2020 08:58

So don't watch. It's not compulsory. In fact it's really easy not to watch.

A lot of people, especially older ones in my experience, will want to watch.

Only last week we had a thread on here complaining there had been no message so it seems they can't win regardless of what they do.

As head of our country I can see why she will make a speech to be broadcast and why some people may be interested and keen to watch.

It may not be something I'm overly bothered about to some people it will be deemed important.

ClutterbuckFarm · 05/04/2020 08:59

Jesus this thread is really bringing out the loons.

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 08:59

I have no respect for the Monarchy.
I hate the way that the media hype them up and are sycophantic towards them.
They have a life of privilege.

HOWEVER - I can see that some people will get something useful from her address. She is a uniting figure for many - especially the older generation - and I think that it will be a good thing.

I will watch it. It is history. It is too late - it should have happened a few weeks ago - so the PR machine got this wrong.

I bet it's not done on Zoom or Skype.

At the outbreak of WW2, King George VI spoke to the nation. I am sure people can remember The King's Speech.

Wolfgirrl · 05/04/2020 09:00

@ClutterbuckFarm

Why?

derxa · 05/04/2020 09:00

It's 'Queen's speech'. HTH Wink

BurneyFanny · 05/04/2020 09:00

I'm still surprised at the vitriol towards the at least harmless, at most helpful gesture from the Queen

Do you not think she and her offspring could be doing a teeny bit more to help? Like actually donating some cash from their massive pile rather than reading words from an autocue for ten minutes?

audreysview · 05/04/2020 09:01

It's the job of the head of state to address the nation. Could be worse, could be Trump

Maybe the Americans say similar, “could be worse, could have a 92 year old woman who’s a head of state but never got elected”

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 09:01

I have American family, pretty sure they aren't saying that.
