Am I the only one who actually couldn’t give a shiny shit what she has to say at this time.

People are dying , everyone is affected so the last thing we need is a rich old woman sitting in her ivory castle asking us to stay calm.

It’s really wound me up, it’s constantly being mentioned on the news!

He didn't just flirt with Nazism as give it a right good seeing to round the back of the pub at closing time

If MN had a like button on the premium service, I’d sign up for it just for this post. 🤣

I've always thought that a lot of the Nazi shit he indulged in was because they had promised that he and Wallis could be king and queen after the war or something (again based on absolutely no research)

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/04/2020 20:20

Bravo, FunkyKingston Grin

Triglesoffy · 08/04/2020 21:24

you do know there's a difference between Germans (those of the time of the Kaiser) and Nazis, right?

Yes. And Philip’s sisters married Nazis.

My late DM always felt that Edward VIII was a little too friendly with the Nazis

He didn't just flirt with Nazism as give it a right good seeing to round the back of the pub at closing time.
........
You're not kidding, he and wifey were in love with Nazism and Hitler who was extremely generous to them and promised a lot more. Thankfully none of that materialised but he could have been a really dangerous man.

SerendipityJane · 09/04/2020 10:41

It would be nice to dismiss the Edward VIII stories as just a "bit of bantz with der Fuhrer" - no more sinister than had they been giving each other wedgies.

However, it wasn't just for lolz, as Edward pretty much told Hitler that if he did sort out Europes Bolshevik problem (Bolsheviks not being the greatest fans of monarchy) then Britain would be right behind him. Hence prompting Hitler to gamble on the Western campaign that was intended to end with a treaty with Britain, and then he'd go East and smash Stalin.

If Hitler had been assured of Britains declaration of war over Poland, things might have taken a different turn.

That's the story I was told growing up - rightly or wrongly. Notice we had to wait for "Eddie Windsor" (as I am sure he hated being called) to die before we got the box set.

Noodlenosefraggle · 09/04/2020 10:48

Yes things could have been very different. Many of the aristocracy were fans of nazism and its sister philosophy, eugenics. With a king actively courting the nazi's, we could have gone a very different path.

I was always disappointed they finished Downton Abbey before they all became enthusiastic supporters of Moseley.

Brefugee · 11/04/2020 08:25

Moseley was at DA wasn't he in one episode? I was sure i remembered them talking about him at some point?

JorahsMistress · 11/04/2020 09:40

@Brefugee moseley was in many episodes of DA, he started in the second ever episode as the butler/valet at crawley house where isobel & matthew lived

Brefugee · 11/04/2020 10:37

@JorahsMistress I'm going to assume joke so Grin

Noodlenosefraggle · 11/04/2020 12:31

I seem to remember there was a character called Mr Moseley! Dont think he went on many fascist marches in the show though Grin

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/04/2020 12:49

Ah yes, Oswald Moseley - that would be the one who was said to have organised hundreds of blackshirts to stand outside the palace, making nazi salutes and calling for the King Hmm

SerendipityJane · 11/04/2020 13:09

Baronet Oswald Ernald Mosely

Brefugee · 11/04/2020 20:47

and the Battle of Cable Street

Alsohuman · 11/04/2020 20:50

Weren’t they Brownshirts, the black ones were Italian.

SerendipityJane · 11/04/2020 21:24

Weren’t they Brownshirts, the black ones were Italian.

Hitlers henchmen - the SA - wore brown. British fascists wore black shirts.

Hurrah for the blackshirts as the Daily Mail headline went.

Alsohuman · 11/04/2020 21:27

Thanks for that. I’m delighted my knowledge of fascism is so slight!

So was my history teachers. Knew the reason Fascists were so named (after Roman "fasces"). But not why ....

Pedallleur · 11/04/2020 21:41

Prob because Communism was the threat and the fascists were led by people who believed in keeping the order of things. After all they would be shot first in a Communist uprising.

You’re really educating me tonight. I love learning new stuff.
