Queens speech

Am I the only one who actually couldn’t give a shiny shit what she has to say at this time.

People are dying , everyone is affected so the last thing we need is a rich old woman sitting in her ivory castle asking us to stay calm.

It’s really wound me up, it’s constantly being mentioned on the news!

It'll be reassuring for some. Don't you want that?

Well maybe on Monday one of the day time live programmes ( Jeremy Vine , This Morning, Lorraine etc) can have a Live Phone In

"Did you feel the Queen's Speech gave you a Patriotic We;re all in this together, supported by the Monarchy feeling. Do you feel the Queen set aside he time to address you and make it count"?

We can see how many respond .
I won;t . I;ll be at work .

SirChing · 05/04/2020 00:32

She showed her morals when she publicly supported Andrew and as for 'national unity', didn't all the RF flee to their country residences as soon as possible?

I agree about Andrew, but don't think that's very fair about them going to their other residences. The government probably asked them to. If any of the royals died at the moment, it would be a nightmare. There is no way that loons wouldn't ignore social isolation and come out to line the funeral route, thereby spreading the virus further. So keeping them out of the way minimises risk that they are likely to get it.

Wolfgirrl · 05/04/2020 00:36

@sirching

Charles legged it up to his country estate in Scotland while symptomatic against government advice not to go to second homes. Yet had the nerve to 'open' a hospital yesterday from said country estate, having taken his coronavirus to Scotland with him.

OldUnit · 05/04/2020 00:38

I'm 38 and quite looking forward to it. I like her and I like the way she's ridden so many storms across the years (apart possibly from the response to Diana). I'm no strident royalist but she has style.

MadameMeursault · 05/04/2020 00:39

I’m the biggest republican going, but I actually think this is a good idea. There are (stupid) people out there who will listen to her above anyone and if just one person stays home more as a result of her telling them to then it’s worth it. Plus it will bring home the seriousness of the whole thing.

Crazylately · 05/04/2020 00:44

Perhaps she has finally heard the death knell of the ruling class? She is not a stupid woman and she has spent most of her adult life trying to keep the monarchy going, she has been undermined and embarrassed by various members of her family and she probably knows that people are getting to the point where they have simply had enough.

It's a desperate act by a desperate woman. It won't work, though.

Freddiefox · 05/04/2020 00:49

The royal family are always so slow in taking action, they seem to wait and see how things are panning out, what the public are saying about them.
They never grab the bull by the hands and do something. There isn’t a leader amongst them. I think their silence speaks volumes about how they feel about us.
Sell some of those jewels to help pay the NHS.
They are an embarrassment

YgritteSnow · 05/04/2020 00:50

Lots of elderly people stuck inside will care and be interested in what she has to say so it's nice for them.

1forAll74 · 05/04/2020 01:06

The Queen did do a smaller message a couple of weeks ago. But it is customary for the Queen to do a more serious message when there is a very serious situation in our country. It is, and always has been, her duty to undertake these things. It's akin to the Christmas day message, which most people like to listen to.

Those who couldn't care less. just don't tune in, but thousands of us will listen to her as they always do.

eaglejulesk · 05/04/2020 01:31

There was a thread on here recently with people complaining that she hadn't made a speech. The poor woman can't win!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 05/04/2020 01:31

I think it will do more good than harm.

A lot of people are not complying with the rules.

A lot of them won't be interested and won't take any notice regardless of what she says.

It will annoy some, but I don't think many will detrimentally change their behaviour because of anything she says, which unfortunately they will find impossible to avoid knowing, even if they don't watch.

A lot of them are older and think they are displaying Blitz Spirit - "we didn't beat the Nazis by hiding at home."

A request from the Queen to stay at home might make them do it properly.

And yes, a lot of people will get comfort from it, which can't hurt at the moment.

It won't make any difference to me as I've been isolating for 3 weeks and plan to continue even after lockdown is lifted. There are reasons and it's not difficult for me.

FunkyKingston · 05/04/2020 01:39

A lot of them are older and think they are displaying Blitz Spirit - "we didn't beat the Nazis by hiding at home."

I've heard this. Exclusively from idiots. Who cannot understand how the two events are entirely unrelated. These idiots are in their 60s and early 70s who weren't even born at the time of the London blitz. To have any meaningful memories of the blitz you'd have to be pushing 90.

CoffeeRunner · 05/04/2020 01:41

Personally, I don’t care whether the Queen makes a speech or not.

But the generation who are most likely to take some warmth & comfort from her words are also the generation still most likely to lose their lives to this virus. For that reason alone I think it’s still a good idea for her to do it.

BilboBercow · 05/04/2020 01:51

People have been moaning like fuck on here that she's only done one address to the nation.

Some people like that shit. Personally I don't care.

freckles83 · 05/04/2020 02:05

If you don't want to watch it, switch over. Not sure why the OP is getting shitty with posters that don't agree with her? Don't start a thread for debate if you're not going to agree with all of the replies you receive l.

Crazylately · 05/04/2020 03:56

The OP has already stated that she is aware there is no obligation to watch it, perhaps she is a little fed up with people stating the obvious?

Is it possible that it is the slavish, sycophantic media over-reaction to the proposed speech that is annoying?

ilovesooty · 05/04/2020 04:00

@MadameMeursault has summed it up for me. If a few people stay at home after hearing her it will be worth her doing it.

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/04/2020 04:03

In a national crisis I think you do need a few words from the Head of State.

Crazylately · 05/04/2020 04:26

What words might those be? "We're all in this together?" I reckon she secretly still believes in the divine right of kings, (and queens), but would never admit it.

ArriettyJones · 05/04/2020 04:28

If it persuades anyone to observe the lockdown rules, it’s a good thing.

I think keen royalists tend to be older on average so maybe some misbehaving pensioners (and there are some) will be won over.

Starfish1021 · 05/04/2020 04:34

I agree OP. What a complete waste of time and energy. Just reading about Charles’s behaviour on here and horrified. There are so many threads about how ‘idiots don’t think the rules apply to them. Yet, Charles has done exactly that. Idiot. The sooner we become a republic the better.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 05/04/2020 05:04

Maybe she's going to tell us Covid has taken Philip. Also maybe it'll stop the over seventies on my street popping out every five minutes and chatting to each other in their front gardens. They all love a jubilee or a royal wedding and clearly aren't listening to the government

ChicChicChicChiclana · 05/04/2020 06:08

Why shouldn't the over 70s chat to each other from their front gardens?

ChicChicChicChiclana · 05/04/2020 06:19

I think a pp makes a good point. Not to be ghoulish, but maybe the Queen has made her last ever public appearance? There is no question that a public address has been expected of her ... I genuinely can't understand why it would annoy op so much. Yabu.

Dumbie · 05/04/2020 06:31

It really can't hurt to hear from our head of state and get some new reinforcement.

It may feel too late, but I believe it's been left on purpose. Enough time for it all to settle down that people start taking chances. So having a renewed focus on social distancing and the necessity of the measures isn't a bad thing.
