To suggest book sharing amongstDD’s classmates

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 16:49

We’ve run out of books. Already! Because DD an absolute book worm. I can’t justify spending loads on new books and libraries closed.

WIBU to suggest on class watsapp group that we set up a book share system? On the understanding that books are are thoroughly cleaned, wrapped in bag and left on doorstep?

It’s a small class of 15, all nice and considerate (none of the “bitchy” glares, cliques and high drama I read about in the world of mumsnet).

Thanks

Gosh @Roseberryjuice I hope you aren't doing anything non essential yourself.

Answers: What are you having for lunch? Food as getting food is essential. If I dint eat I die

How did it get to you? Answer: Delivery as we are vulnerable. I hope that is acceptable to you?

Could you have grown it yourself? Answer: Nope live in a flat

Hope you have only bought carbolic soap. Answer: using bar soap as no other option for me in my situation

Did you stop and take a picture on your walk? Answer: no walks outside as vulnerable

Do you know someone's working to keep your internet running? Answer: yes of course why wouldn't they? Very grateful

Hope you aren't going to make use of that, or any repairs made during lockdown. Answer: no will leave the cars MOT and if something breaks we will try to fix ourselves

What is your point exactly??

Roseberryjuice · 05/04/2020 12:15

drspouse you are a bully.

Roseberryjuice · 05/04/2020 12:21

Drspouse you are trying to 'catch me out'. I am actually isolating. So keep trying but we are at home and don't leave. We get food delivered and nothing else. We follow the rules and more but many people aren't and it will draw this whole thing out.

You have persist with taking shots at people in quite a nasty way throw out this thread. You feel that because you have studied science that your knowledge is superior. You have no idea of what I may have studied. You don't know me. You don't know my situation. You are not capable of healthy debate and are just taking cheap shots at people. Grow up.

drspouse · 05/04/2020 12:40

I think you'd better give us the list of what's essential and what isn't then rose, since you seem to know better than anyone.

Roseberryjuice · 05/04/2020 12:41

I have never indicated that I 'know better'. Another cheap shot from you.

Roseberryjuice · 05/04/2020 12:44

You just don't like the fact that I am actually isolating.

Roseberryjuice · 05/04/2020 12:46

And with that I am really out of this thread now. Drspouse you are no doubt one of those people that must have the last word. Whatever it is that you have so say I don't actually care and you won't hear from me again on this particular tread. Bye.

Bringringbring12 · 05/04/2020 12:50

@Roseberryjuice

You sound very very unhappy. I feel for you. These times must be especially hard for those that actively look for the negative, the shadows, the darkness. I hope that you emerge from this mentally unscathed. I’m not being facetious.

Roseberryjuice · 05/04/2020 13:05

Bring very happy being with my family and generally a happy person no matter what life's throws at me. Strong mental health and never suffered mental health issues. Deeply frustrated is a better term for this. I would like life to return to normal but feel that the flouting of rules is dragging this out longer than it needs to. I am feeling passionate on this topic that's all. Thank you for being caring however x

Roseberryjuice · 05/04/2020 13:06

Ok bye now!

SachaStark · 05/04/2020 13:17

No idea if anybody has mentioned it or not on this thread yet, but Scribd have a 30-day free membership for books, audiobooks and magazines, if anybody wants it:

jackstini · 05/04/2020 13:35

If it is part of your daily walk that you would definitely be going on anyway and if you leave them for at least 48 hours then I don't see an issue

I absolutely hate the idea of e-books too; it really doesn't help with trying to cut down screen time!

Redyellowpink · 05/04/2020 13:40

You are clearly not taking this lockdown seriously. We should immediately ban reading and burn all books.

Bee128 · 05/04/2020 13:42

All children have different reading capabilities though. My son has sen and is reading books far younger than his peers so this would embarrass him.

Graphista · 05/04/2020 14:08

DrSpouse I’ve reported your outrageous bullying on this thread you should be ashamed!

Op you haven’t been much better with the heavy sarcasm!

Disgraceful the pair of you!

Graphista · 05/04/2020 14:08

The “evidence” isn’t anywhere close to definitive as yet because this is such a new virus it’s impossible to know for certain how long it survives on certain surfaces.

They can’t even definitively say yet it isn’t airborne and not just droplet spread.

Regarding using other items coming into the home, we can’t completely avoid touching/using possibly contaminated surfaces but it IS our responsibility to ourselves and others to limit this to essentials only, books (and I say this as an avid reader since childhood myself and lit graduate) are NOT essential!

I have quite a few friends and ex colleagues who are hcps now and frontline key workers and they’re getting rightly mightily pissed off that people won’t just follow the rules and keep activity to the bare minimum required, constantly looking for loopholes to bend the rules is literally risking people’s lives right now!

They’ve already lost 2 colleagues to the virus one a hcp and one a police officer.

Quit whining, making ridiculous attempts to justify selfish actions and making excuses and just follow the rules.

“audiobooks are the mcdonalds version or real books” utter nonsense! The content is the same! Would you say that about a parent reading to a child or someone reading in person to someone with sight loss? Of course not don’t be so utterly ridiculous!

Before books existed there was very much a long and proud history of oral storytelling.

Postal workers are actually desperately trying to get employee protection via the union as they’re being treated dreadfully right now and are very concerned they are being placed at considerable risk.

Myself and others are saying to Royal Mail on sm and by email that deliveries of junk mail certainly need to stop right now.

“Reading is reading, whether it's a book or a tablet, or indeed a comic or the back of a cereal packet!” Exactly!

Bringringbring12 · 05/04/2020 16:30

For those who has a real issue with this (too late - the book is on the door step and will be opened on Wednesday morning!)... I have bought a newspaper along with my essential shopping this morning (which included a packet of biscuit. Duck).... what’s your bee is on newspapers?! This won’t be left out for 3 days, I’m reading it now. Plus quite possibly thumbed through by others.

Added to which - your own essential food shopping. Are you leaving on door step for three days?

OP posts:
Bringringbring12 · 05/04/2020 16:30

I’m genuinely curious as to how you are fitting all the pieces together

OP posts:
ittakes2 · 05/04/2020 16:33

I would buy her a kindle

Deepgreenandblue · 05/04/2020 16:34

The point people are making here is:

  • yes you will have to touch food and paper etc from your shopping. I don't think anyone is saying you can't do this. It unavoidable and people do realise this
  • they are trying to tell you that a book swap in non essential. Don't confuse that with a food shop

Does that help clarify?

Schoolchoicesucks · 05/04/2020 16:38

Do you have access to the Libby app? Free e-and audio books through the libraries. Can be downloaded to most tablets/laptops/phone at a push.

Bringringbring12 · 05/04/2020 16:47

Yes but in the food shops you refer to.
Are you ONlY putting in essential items and therefore only touching essential items
Or are you putting in... biscuits / coffee / crisps etc?

How is a book that will be left on my doorstep for three days worse than a packet of biscuits that will be touched by goodness knows how many people and then brought in to your home immediately?

There are always people who think the rules don’t apply to them. Don’t waste your time people
