To suggest book sharing amongstDD’s classmates

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 16:49

We’ve run out of books. Already! Because DD an absolute book worm. I can’t justify spending loads on new books and libraries closed.

WIBU to suggest on class watsapp group that we set up a book share system? On the understanding that books are are thoroughly cleaned, wrapped in bag and left on doorstep?

It’s a small class of 15, all nice and considerate (none of the “bitchy” glares, cliques and high drama I read about in the world of mumsnet).

Thanks

If you're dropping them off on a daily walk and leaving in a container for 2+ days (3+ if plastic wrapped), it's surely less risky than people ordering new from Amazon warehouses with known covid cases?

Personally I think it's a good idea, but only with the safety precautions above...

Cassie71 · 04/04/2020 17:43

There's free children's books on audible.

tigerbear · 04/04/2020 17:45

Try Storyberries online - loads of free books

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/04/2020 17:50

How stupid.

You can get the kindle app on iPhone. There are loads of free books on it.

There are in fact loads of free book apps that don’t require a kindle.

I’m not sure why you would go out of your way to swap books when it’s so much easier to get free books online. You can be reading within minutes. Cancel the book swap.

OrganTransplant123 · 04/04/2020 17:52

Some of these replies are bonkers. The OP is going to take a WALK, which are permitted daily, to collect a book. She isn’t doing anything remotely risky or selfish.

Graphista · 04/04/2020 18:05

SO irresponsible and putting your own child at risk.

Just NO!

I very much doubt you don't have a device in your house you couldn't access ebooks on.

A 7 year old is absolutely old enough to be able to use ebooks or even you must surely have something you can stream audiobooks through so they don't even have to touch anything!

It's people like you are going to force us all to be in some sort of lock down for longer.

Quit justifying the unjustifiable.

A 7 year old is also perfectly able to understand the necessity to reread their own books at this time plus do other activities.

People are DYING don't be so selfish!

I don’t want my 7 year old to read on a kindle. Nor does she fancy one either wtaf! Why? There is absolutely NO good reason for this.

The kindle (and a whole plethora of other ebooks) apps are free and easy to use. Utterly ridiculous of you to not do so.

#cancel the swap

Roseberryjuice · 04/04/2020 18:15

No no no no no

Roseberryjuice · 04/04/2020 18:18

Why did you ask opinions if you only want supportive responses?? You had made up your mind already - feel free then, go ahead and risk your child's life or others. I am actually a bit sick of people like you that can't just STAY AT HOME.

Ohtherewearethen · 04/04/2020 18:22

It’s a small class of 15, all nice and considerate (none of the “bitchy” glares, cliques and high drama I read about in the world of mumsnet)

Oh thank goodness for that because I believe the latest research shows that Corona virus specifically targets bitchy, cliquey, high drama mums. Phew, crisis well and truly averted there, OP!

KoalasandRabbit · 04/04/2020 18:29

It isn't within the permitted activities at all, nothing essential about a printed book rather than a free online one, but some people seem to think they can bend the rules to suit themselves. Just a shame they are putting others at risk.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/04/2020 18:34

I don’t know why someone would do this when there are free books online unless it’s just to make some stubborn point that they can do what they want. Confused

drspouse · 04/04/2020 18:49

And if they only have one device in the household? Does the 7 year old get to take it to read in bed?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/04/2020 18:50

Confused they share? Why would it be a problem for the 7yo to have it for half an hour at bedtime?

drspouse · 04/04/2020 18:51

It sounds like she's reading a lot more than half an hour a day!
This really is becoming the sackcloth and ashes site isn't it?

Roseberryjuice · 04/04/2020 18:59

No drspouse we were asked our opinion and the majority are saying no don't do it. We are in lockdown if you haven't noticed and swapping books is not an essential activity especially when there are alternative options. I also think people ideas of leaving books for a few days etc make no sense as no one knows enough about this virus. What make them the expert. Clearly we in the UK are now finding out just how serious this virus is but people still want to do quite frankly stupid things like swap books.

Beingyellow · 04/04/2020 19:06

I think you would have been better getting some reading from online resources. That being said the extreme reactions from people really bug me. If classmates have agreed to swap books and you have done your best to clean them before swapping and don't touch them for a few days its not the end of the world.

drspouse · 04/04/2020 19:09

The evidence is that it is clear from paper after 2 days. As PP have said. Of course, you might think that anything coming in your house from outside including food, water and medicine is permanently infected, but you'd struggle to exist like that, wouldn't you?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/04/2020 19:11

It sounds like she's reading a lot more than half an hour a day!

You didn’t mention the day. You said bedtime. Half an hour is a reasonable amount of reading at bedtime.

If she wants to read during the day- again- they can share. Not sure why that’s such an abhorrent concept. Don’t families share things anymore?

Roseberryjuice · 04/04/2020 19:17

Drspouse what evidence? Seriously there are studies on this virus everywhere - many disputing one another. Even reputable studies I would take with a grain of salt right now as this virus is very very new and there hasn't been enough time or resource to study it properly. Proper research will take place but right now everything is an assumption isn't it. I am well aware that it might sit on some surfaces for a few days and then go but really we don't know do we.....so with that I wouldn't hand a used book to my kid right now even if it had been "cleaned".

OrganTransplant123 · 04/04/2020 19:26

Shock horror but people get newspapers delivered to their house. Are you all up in arms about that too?

drspouse · 04/04/2020 19:29

Newspapers are generally sterile.
But people are also getting letters, tins with paper wrappers, their children are writing on workbooks from school and other paper, they are reading books they've been sent from school etc etc.
I guess no Mumsnetters are using any products from outside the house though.

Chattercino · 04/04/2020 19:29

One of the mums at my school has set up a swap box outside her house so children in the village can stop by on their daily walk and swap books (which have been cleaned).

itsasmallworldafterall · 04/04/2020 19:31

I appreciate all those links @stargirl1701 thank you!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/04/2020 19:33

How does she know they’ve been cleaned chattercino?
