To suggest book sharing amongstDD’s classmates

We’ve run out of books. Already! Because DD an absolute book worm. I can’t justify spending loads on new books and libraries closed.

WIBU to suggest on class watsapp group that we set up a book share system? On the understanding that books are are thoroughly cleaned, wrapped in bag and left on doorstep?

It’s a small class of 15, all nice and considerate (none of the “bitchy” glares, cliques and high drama I read about in the world of mumsnet).

Thanks

I was going to say there's the harm in asking and I see you've done exactly that.

To the people suggesting buying books online, they aren't coming from sterile warehouses in vacuum packs, how is that any safer than a book swap?

Has there been any recorded case of virus transfer from a book?

In fact how is it different to doing shopping for someone else?

OneHippoOnThePhone · 04/04/2020 17:15

Don’t bother wiping the book with an anti-bacterial wipe as Covid-19 is a virus not a bacteria.

If you are going to swap books I’d keep them in quarantine for at least 3 days. Wash your hands after collecting them.

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:15

Another mum just added that we wait 3 days to collect, good idea.

And yes - all very close (have to be to get in to the school!)

Can’t wait to get some new books in.

I don't know why you bothered posting, you'd already decided to do it.

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:18

Even if money no object - I still wouldn’t buy a kindle for a 7 year old. Not a chance. All that for later. Now it’s about thumbing three books, looking after them, the little action of inserting your own book mark. Silly but that’s my preference.

My wife is shit at family things and this situation is just showing that more.

It's not just men.

stargirl1701 · 04/04/2020 17:18

So glad I found all those links for you 🙄

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:18

@OneHippoOnThePhone

I know. More to appease those you think differently

Wrong post 🤣

@stargirl1701

Thank you but I think I was fairly clear in my OP question. Kind of you to take it upon yourself to do that, but ultimately no what the thread was an AIBU to do something very specific!

Our school sent a message saying our library was doig free books online - when I checked wasn't easy to do if not a member but if already have a library card maybe worth checking if you library provides anything online.

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:22

Asked for opinion but almost as soon as posted - I picked up a thread berating someone for popping to the shops twice because she’d forgotten formula.

And I realised that it was not exactly the most regional website for corona virus related questions!

This.

And no need for the sarcasm about the Kindle. Posters explained how you can get the app and books for free!

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:24

In fact how is it different to doing shopping for someone else?

Because there’s a hint to pleasure about it. And that’s not permitted on mumsnet in relation to anything anymore!

OP posts:
Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:25

Yes @CastleCrasher
But not the actual kindle.

OP posts:
CastleCrasher · 04/04/2020 17:25

Confused you don't need a Kindle. You can use the app on a phone or tablet etc. No Kindle required.

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:26

That was v I kind of you @stargirl1701

Will keep in back pocket for later down the line

OP posts:
Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:27

@CastleCrasher

Thanks but as I say - even if money no object I don’t want my 7 year old to read on a kindle. Nor does she fancy one either

Oliphantitus · 04/04/2020 17:27

Audible is free for kids books at the moment. Not the same as reading but still a great resource if anyone fancies it

Poetryinaction · 04/04/2020 17:28

Leave them outside for 24 hours before touching.

Aragog · 04/04/2020 17:30

If primary age and you have access to a tablet or phone for your DC to use - have a look online at

Oxford Owls: Oxford Owls

There are also lots of websites offering free access to books, including on the Kindle app for tablets and phones.

Apple1029 · 04/04/2020 17:35

Absolutely selfish and stupid of you. So everyone is walking around to leave books on doorsteps. Then some mother cant leave her children at home so she drags them along. And then just in this group, you selfish lot think you are so clever by cleaning books yet completely ignore what stay at home means.
Utterly self centered when the alternative is online/kindle.

whiskybysidedoor · 04/04/2020 17:36

I don’t think you are doing anything wrong, but these things tend to fizzle out fairly promptly when one ‘child’ sends Jane Eyre or War and Peace.

I would rethink the kindle though. If you do have an avid reader they are marvellous. Like a whole library at their fingertips. Just because it’s tech doesn’t automatically mean bad.
